Dead eyes watched the camp as folk scurried hither and there in vain attempts to avoid the rain. The drops fell so hard and fast that the splashdowns leapt nearly a foot into the air effectively soaking every part of any schmuck foolish enough to brave the dreadful element. It wasn’t long before the wagons, encircled around a large iron ring that was used to make communal fires, were quiet and still. The precipitation beat against the wooden boxes which made a very distinct sound. It was something Vladislov had never heard before he left Kalinor. When it mingled with the noise created by the rain pounding on the tarps drawn up for the horses, he nearly found himself tapping his feet.

None of this mattered, of course. The rain was a nuisance to most but to a thief who needed help finding opportune moments –well, it was a blessing of the gods. Had the Symenestra known about Makutsi, he might have been inclined to give her a song of praise. Instead, his black eyes peered through the filthy glass window that was not so much round as it was a blob pretending to be a circle. His master had found his way into the wagon of an unattractive woman that belonged to another man. Good riddance and godspeed. The things they must be doing to pass the time made the thief shudder. He needed to focus and devise a plan. That key wasn’t going to magically find and open a chest on its own.

The time had come to act and action would be set free. The thief moved from the window and dropped his empty black stare to the shackle around his ankle. A smirk curled the left side of his mouth as he crouched down on one knee. He winced as a flash of pain burned through his skull; the curse’s delicate reminder.

His hands disappeared into the inner pocket of his cloak and produced a simple set of picks; a parting gift from his former instructor. “Gods rest you, ya petching bastard.” The Symenestra whispered to himself as he took the rake in one hand and the pick in the other. He slid the pick up to the top of the hole in the old iron bracelet. The edges played with rust and the keyhole had been worn in an oblong fashion so lacks was the care of this device. The rake was placed alongside the pick and both were plunged inside the metal restraint. Once the tools bottomed out, Vlad twisted the rake down and began to feel around for the tumbler. Once he felt the pressure begin to slip down, he carefully froze that hand so that the small metal tab would remain plunged and ready for release. That was the easy part.

Finishing the Job

With the pick, he began to twist and wiggle it around trying to find the notch which would allow him to disengage the pin that held the shackle together. After the first three tries, he gently rested the pick against the keyhole and took his hand away. He extended his fingers then made a fist and squeezed. He repeated this several times and shook his hand out before taking the thief’s friend back between his thumb and index finger. Another blinding thump from his temples caused his eyes to shut and drop the pick. Vlad bit down on his lip and took hold of the implement once more. He tried several more times and on the fifth try, he found that magical spot but the tiny hook didn’t fully catch and it slipped wide.

A growl reverberated from his throat but the chained creature did not give up. He went right back into the same spot and after a few quick attempts he felt the hook catch inside. Instead of rushing through the process, he applied more pressure to his tools until he was certain neither would slip. Slowly and intentionally, Vladislov splayed both tools so that they rested against opposite catches on the keyhole. He closed his black eyes and rotated his hands while he applied even pressure. The weight of the shackle shifted a bit until it pressed into his pale flesh. Then, as if it had no objection to the idea, the iron clamp clanked and opened. The halves fell away, pivoting on the hinge, then clunking on to the wagon’s floor.

Vlad’s pick set was scattered by the action but he was able to quickly collect them and replace them into his inner pants pocket. The thief took his restraint and pushed it up under his straw pad then rose to stand at his full height. A dizzying sensation overtook him and nearly toppled the lanky feloow but the wagon was small and its frame provided support that Vlad leaned against. The pattering of the rain was still going on with its steady rhythm which brought comfort to the fiend. He had no idea how long it had taken him to free his leg but there was solace in the night.

Clawed fingers drew his hood up over his head and then tucked the long white hair inside the shadowy cloth. He walked over to the door and knelt next to its frame. Single claw fished at an object wedged between two floorboards where there was a splintered gap and fished out the key he had taken on his previous visit. Another wave of a disturbed equilibrium flooded his senses. The thief clutched the key in his palm and leaned his head against the door. When the symptoms passed, he would slip out into the night.
