Considered one of the most mysterious cities in Mizahar, Alvadas is called The City of Illusions. It is the home of Ionu and the notorious Inverted. This city sits on one of the main crossroads through The Region of Kalea.

Word traveled quickly in Alvadas, at least among certain circles. Channels of overheard gossip and whispered secrets spread across the city, both above and below, intersecting in places, kept carefully separate in others, all funnelling news and rumours and facts to certain discerning ears.

Once in a while, every season or two, some new face would appear, tugging at the strings, prodding at the nodes and intersections of these carefully laid channels. And like a fly landing in a web, the vibrations would travel up those silken paths to those careful spiders building and tending to them.

Most of the spies Rey was on good terms with looked on these new faces with amusement and a hint of disdain. Either they would find a place in the city on their own, integrate themselves into the web, or, more likely, they would gutter out and disappear. Either ways, they were of minimal concern to those already established. Why waste time on

Rey took a different approach. Most of these new faces would prove disappointing. That was alright. He only needed one good one to gain a significant advantage over his competitors. And if it meant he could guide a potential new player in this game down a path most advantageous to him, all the better.

So when word reached Rey of a pale, peculiarly clad woman beginning to ask pointed questions, he set off to see for himself. A few discreet inquiries placed her at the Stallion's Rear, so he was off to the castle that made up Alvadas's Syliras.

The woman was easy enough to identify, her manner of clothing distinct even in Alvadas. She was seated at the bar, something he couldn't make out in her hand, and Rey took a moment to assess her. Someone like that, who'd been making inquiries, would no doubt be suspicious of someone who came up to her to talk. A con worked best if the mark thought they were the ones initiating contact, Kyla used to tell him. (He resolutely ignored the pang at the thought of her. More likely than not some Sunberthian had taken her in for a bounty by now. Best not to dwell on it.)

Scanning the room, Rey spotted an ideal group of drinkers, loose and easygoing enough that he could join in without much fuss. Slowly making his way across the room, he focused, summoning up djed, and pushing it out to settle around his hand. As he crossed the woman's line of vision, he raised his hand to tuck his hair behind his ear, using the gesture as a hypnotic focus to magically draw her attention and raise her interest, just a little.

Oftentimes, a nudge was all that was needed. He eased himself into the group of drinkers, and started chatting with them, making sure that he was seen talking and being friendly. The entire time, he made certain not to make anything of looking in her direction, ignoring her without avoiding that direction entirely.

After a few chimes of chatting, he slipped away from the group, and padded towards the bar to order a glass of wine. Time to see if she'd take the bait.

The Stallion's Rear

Her second venture out into the streets of Alvadas had proven to be far less frustrating than the first. Taking Alex's instruction on how to better navigate the illusions into consideration, she had focused her thoughts on finding a quiet, out-of-the way place where she could take the first steps toward putting her finger on the pulse of the city.

After decisively turning down this alleyway and that, crossing several streets and even backtracking down one that looked identical to the one she had started her quest on (with the exception of the cobblestones, which were muddied hues that ran the gambit from red to violet), the Stallion's Rear had appeared before her, quaint and unassuming. She eyed the grime that had gradually crept across the front of the establishment over the years as she made her way to the door, hesitant to touch the handle with her velvet gloves.

The interior had been more to her liking, with a certain dark charm to it that hinted at the nature of Alvadas's seedy underbelly. The clientele who were seated around tables, hunched over hands of worn playing cards and mugs of frothy ale, seemed less vibrant once removed from the colorful glamours outside. More than a few eyes trailed her progress towards the bar as she delicately closed her parasol and gathered her skirts to sit upon a stool, but the majority lost interest and returned to their own dealings.

An exception to every rule, one of the more burly men at a nearby table rose to the challenge, approaching with a swagger in his step. He clapped a hand onto the polished surface bar as she deftly pulled a freshly rolled cigarette and an elegant, wand-like silver holder from some hidden pocket on her person, marrying the two objects in her hands without acknowledging his arrival.

"Ye look to be in need of company, lass. The city's a big place, full of unexpected dangers." His leathery lips parted to reveal yellowed teeth, winking dully at her from amidst the wiry hairs of his unkempt beard. "Pretty thing like you shouldn't be on her lonesome in a hole like this."

Lowering the tip of the cigarette into the flame of a nearby candle, she allowed herself a tight smile that didn't stray anywhere near her eyes.

"Decent companionship can be so hard to come by, can't it?" The rolled paper began to burn, and she lifted it away, the holder pinched between her fingers. "What is your company worth, if I might ask?"

His brow furrowed slightly at her placid tone. "After somethin' a little more, huh? Should have figured ye for a soiled dove, what with the getup." His bloodshot eyes freely roamed her body, revisiting the exposed flesh of her bare shoulders and soft neck more than a few times. She endured it with the patience of a saint, her own gaze sweeping the room from her vantage point, ignoring him.

Her attention snagged on a woman across the room, on a movement so ordinary that she should have passed over it, but was strangely enticing. Alluring, even. There was something distantly familiar about the movement, simplistic but powerful. The woman, a slender thing, was not looking in her direction, however. Feeling strangely intrigued, Fragmenta wondered what it was that had drawn her attention to the girl, but was distracted by the barrel-chested oaf at her side.

"Mebbe some wine would warm that block of ice in yer chest, eh?" He called for the bartender, telling him to pour a glass of the sweet red from behind the counter. He tossed five silver mizas onto the bar and turned back to her, leaning in so that his fetid breath pervaded the air between them. "There. That should be more than enough to get some of that companionship for meself, yeah?"

Her cheeks hollowed ever so slightly as she took a leisurely drag off the cigarette, its cherry glowing an angry red. She gave him her undivided attention for the first time since he had initiated their little encounter and, pursing her carefully painted lips, blew a steady stream of smoke directly between his eyes.

"Darling, I would love nothing more than to spend the night getting to know you, but I'm afraid you were just leaving, weren't you?"

The man blinked, wisps of smoke still floating lazily around his face, the magic that tinged her voice lingering in his ears with a faint buzz. He blinked again, wondering why he was still standing there, staring at a woman who had already turned her attention towards the glass of dark wine that had been placed before her on the polished wood of the bar. He had places to be.

"I, er. Huh." His brow twitched as he tried to find something more eloquent to part on and, ultimately failing, walked haltingly away. Fragmenta's mouth turned up at the corners in a satisfied smirk as she gently tilted the stemmed glass in her hand this way and that, the wine gently sloshing against the sides. She brought the rim to her lips and took a sip, savoring what half of a gold miza could buy you even in a crumbling heap like this.

"This pairs beautifully with the Sywart, darling." she said conversationally to the oddly magnetic silver haired stanger who had made their way over to the bar when they ordered a glass of the wine for themselves. She was speaking to them but not at them, still facing forward on the stool, taking another long drag from the cigarette that resulted in another cloud of sweet smelling smoke, less forcefully expelled than the last. She sighed to herself, a self-indulgent smile creeping across the parts of her face not covered by the ballroom masque. I find that the most delicious results can be found where flavors work well together. Wouldn't you agree?"

Rey was not the only one to have taken notice of the woman, it seemed. He settled at the bar just in time to hear a man imply, and rather crudely at that, that he could buy her "companionship". How dull. Still, it gave him a chance to observe how she dealt with unwanted situations. Rey took a sip from his cup, still not looking at her. Instead, he focused on his other senses, letting his sight fade into the back of his mind. As muted as his hearing and smell was in this form, they were good enough at this distance.

The sound of muted inhalation, of a stool shifting slightly (the man's, Rey would guess), then the release of a breath, the smell of smoke ghosting through the air. A half stuttered breath from the man. Then, as the woman spoke, there was a slight hum in Rey's ears, a tingle in his teeth, and he brought his cup to his lips again to hide a tiny smile. A magic user too, if his auristical senses were correct. Which they always were. A hypnotist, judging from the way the man abruptly left. Oh, this one would be interesting for certain. Another hypnotist. He'd have to keep his sense alert with her, and be careful about his own use of the magic.

He paused when she spoke again, and glanced over at her, raising an eyebrow. He blinked twice, feigning mild surprise at the mask on her face and the scales glinting on her skin, then smiled, softly, but not shyly. He'd settled on a persona close to his own, friendly and clever, but a little softer, a little less obviously dangerous than Rey truly was. And not a snake. He'd gotten better at hiding his accent, though the slight hiss still slipped out at times.

"Oh? I'll keep that in mind." He focused briefly, and slipped into that magical sense that was almost second nature to him now, let it settle into a comfortable awareness, enough to scent her without overtaxing himself. The taste of magic clung thickly to her, he noted, just as it did with the Konti twins he'd met several days back. A feature of their race, he presumed. Her personal scent was intriguing, bright colours and sharp flavours subtly veiled, with flashes of something else Rey couldn't identify.

"Of course." He responded, gauging her reaction both magically and intuitively. "Mosst things are improved when their parts work well together." He shifted on his chair to angle himself slightly towards her. "Have to know the parts before you know if they'll work together though, and I don't think I know you. New to Alvadas?"

"I'll keep that in mind."

Her gaze swiveled towards the other, eyeing them out of the corner of the masque's almond shaped slits with newfound curiosity. Soft-spoken words formed by luscious lips untouched by makeup of any kind, gently sloped features framed by a fall of silken hair that caught what little light the room had to offer and gleamed like the silver mizas the bartender had scooped off the counter, flawless skin as smooth as a saucer of cream, jarringly interrupted by the faint scarring on the apple of a cheek, bared to the world without shame.

This was a face that read like a treasure map, dancing along the cusp of masculinity and femininity and residing within the expansive grey area that many failed to recognize as anything but indecision. Confusion. A lack of commitment to standards.

What she saw was natural beauty, simple and unadorned. And in many ways, that was a relief, seeing as how the city and its inhabitants so often presented layers of beauty that were carefully crafted to conceal dangers. The boy--for his voice had given that much away, just barely, yet if she was being completely honest with herself (a rare occurrence), it was nothing more than an educated guess on her part--may have been as cutthroat as the others she had met, but he didn't bastardize his beauty with the flamboyance that defined the city. And that, if nothing else, made her feel the slightest bit at ease.

Still. She wasn't new to this.

"Have to know the parts before you know if they'll work together though, and I don't think I know you. New to Alvadas?"

Her lips quirked up into a sedate smile. "Is it that obvious? And here I thought I had dressed the part." She met him halfway, turning as he had, resting one elbow on the bar and propping her dainty chin on the heel of her gloved hand. Openly appraising him and sensing that he was doing the same. Like he said, she was new: she had nothing to hide that pertained to Alvadas. "Although I doubt anyone could ever become entirely accustomed to a city that is never the same as it was the day before. Are you, master...?" she trailed off, fishing for a name to put with the face.

Flavours and scents danced through Rey's mind, giving him flashes of insight into the Konti's mind. The vanilla scent of interest and curiosity, the muted sweetness of appreciation (and a slight prickle of where her gaze roamed over his face),

Plans wove and unravelled in Reysin's mind as he tried to decide what to do about this one. She was bold, certainly, in a way that he rather liked. But the important matter at hand was if she was any good. She was obvious enough in her scrutiny of him, but he couldn't tell yet if that was a deliberate move or not.

She'd passed his initial inspection, which was more than most newcomer spies did. Now, he'd test her, but how? To give himself time to think, he took a sip of his drink, and smiled at her. "Adrian Flint." He told her. His pseudonyms were carefully chosen to not be too sibilant, to avoid any accidental hisses. "You learn to love Ionu's whims, over time. Those who don't don't lasst, usually. "

He grinned sheepishly to take the sting out of his words. An idea was starting to take shape. This one certainly seemed promising enough, or at least, interesting enough that he'd be willing to put in the effort to give her a nudge. He had a particular target in mind. If she could find it, she'd have an advantage in her future activities, as well as Rey's attention and interest. If not, well. It'd be a pity, but that was the way things went.

"Is not so much that you look new to the city as it is that people would know you if you were local." He leaned forwards slightly, letting his own gaze grow a little more thoughtful. "This sort of clothing draws attention, even in Alvadas. And so would you yourself, I think."

He'd have to approach this delicately, make her think this was merely a stroke of luck. Or Ionu's influence. If he could draw her into talking about what she did, or into evading the question... "What brings you to our shifting city, then? Seeking a place among Alvadas's infamous actors? Or something less... flashy?"
