Common Interests (Leyus)

After half a season on a caravan, Rey was utterly elated to be back in a city again. Even if that city smelled overwhelmingly of fish. Rey had spent the last few bells wandering Zeltiva, poking around the place and trying to get a feel of the city. It seemed a strange sort of juxtaposition, to have a city dedicated to both sailing and learning. He didn't typically associate sailors and scholars, but it seemed this city was home to both in equal measures.

The south leg of the city was uncomfortably wealthy, while the north end, East Street, he believed they called it, seemed like the sort of slum where everyone knew each other, and a newcomer like him would stick out like a sore thumb. And possibly get robbed. So instead Rey stuck to the central area where they'd come in, the place they called the Old Quarter.

He wandered around the shops, admiring the craftsmanship on display, poked his head into the theatre, spent some time in the library, before finally making his way to the World's End Grotto. The communal area was about half full, and the room hummed with conversation, mostly too quiet for Rey to hear from the entrance.

Scanning the room, Rey spotted a few other members of his caravan, seated together in the corner, drinking and talking. He could go to them, he supposed. There was probably space for one more at the table. Instead, he settled into a table near the centre of the room, right by a particularly large knot of people.

He often found the best way to get a good handle on a new city was to listen to the gripes of the common people. And sitting in at an inn and keeping his ears peeled was the easiest way to do that.

Pulling his journal out from his pack, Rey began doodling idly, pretending to be busy as he eavesdropped on the group nearby. Jokes about Svefra, gossip about the council, grumbled complaints about university costs, about food shortages, about pirates, all of it Rey filed away in his head to start to form a picture of Zeltiva.

And so he sat there, watching and learning. Heh. Maybe he would fit in just fine in this city.
