Watching the wind cut across the rolling hills was mesmerizing. The way the dying grass twisted and fell to the wind only to come back up reminded her of the ocean waves far off the Avanthal coast. As Syna rose up slowly from behind the hills, the color of the grass shifted to show just how much the lack of rain–or even snow for that matter–had begun to really affect the land.
The latest round of rain left deep gouges in the land against the hills, leading to unusual pools of water collecting around the flats that almost resembled a marsh rather than a grassland. She had no idea how such a place sustained itself in the first place even when winter fulfilled its duties to renew the land… trying to imagine this world in bright greens just didn’t do any justice. Anything her mind conjured was flat like the land… like a painting lacking any real depth or detail. The artist too lazy to make a true picture.
Despite the fact that Syna was barely hanging in the sky, the heat was already beginning to build and Alek huffed at the idea of another hot day in the grass. She had hoped that with enough time she would begin to grow accustom to the temperature difference than what she grew up with, but either enough time had not passed yet or she was simply to impatient to let any real time pass for results.
It was probably the latter.
The thought of heat however was not enough reason to drive her back to the tent she was currently sharing with one of the indigenous people. Baltair had been kind enough to take her in, but it seemed that kindness was forcing their hands. Food was apparently scarce with winter and it was even worse now that it was absent, but it was more so when one added another mouth to feed. And hunting at the moment was harder than ever.
Baltair had been out several times in the past few days, but he hadn’t had any luck with catching anything. Once or twice she had accompanied him, but for the most part Alek had remained within the tent. Tail tucked between her legs was an avid description of her most days. The mark that stained her skin and fur was a death sentence and it nagged it her constantly… the danger that her Queen had put her and her family into. Someone she had worshiped and put her undying trust and love into...
Alek needed distraction.
She had left Baltair in the tent before he could awaken. He wouldn’t want her wandering the grassland alone, but she had little intentions of wandering too far from the city. She had no way of surviving this arid land and she had no intention of becoming another form of victim for it’s torturous ways.
With all the rain of the past day Alek hoped it drew some smaller prey in closer to the city than normal in a desperate attempt to find water. It would be surprising as it was if any of these sparse puddles would be remaining by the time Syna faded from view, so she figured despite her lack of any real hunting skills she might be able to find a hare or small bird or two to add to Baltair’s lacking food supply.
She only hoped that the smaller prey did not bring anything big with it.
