Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Timestamp: 5th of Spring 518AV
Location: Oathmaster's Tower

Looking out of the window of his office, Tuvos Jerusc watched as a young red haired woman approached the tower. He didn't have any appointment with any nakivak today, so he was curious what the red haired woman wanted from the Oathmaster's tower. Walking to his desk, he sat down in his chair shuffling through paper's wondering if he missed anyone appointment. All his appointment today was with potential contract holders looking for a nakivak. Regardless, he started to neatly straighten out his desks of errant papers and unnecessary paperwork clutter plagued him daily. If he was going to be persuading a new potential nakivak into the program. He wanted to be as organized as possible for her to have confidence in his management of the program. The Oathmaster straightened out his hair and adjusted his black leather vest and waited for someone to knock on the door. He waited about three chimes till he heard a knock on his wooden door.

Tuvos said with a smile on his faee, “You may enter.”

Tuvos face went from a smile to a frown when his resident Cerulean entered the room. He was expecting Charissa with a young nakivak in tow, but instead, he had his muscle, Urinisic entered the room and said rather matter a fact tone, “Our Runaway as been caught and returned. How do you want her punished?”

Sovus said swiftly, “She broke the law, so find her a isolated cell in the basement. She can spend the next few days in the darkness. It will teach her humility and courage. Besides, we have a guest. Let the Healer Clarissa know immediately to encourage the human to join us. When Clarissa done finding out the human's reason for coming to the tower, have her escort the red haired woman up to my office.”

Urinisic said with a nod, “It shall be done, Sovus.”

***

Clarissa, was staring at the door for a bell waiting for someone to enter the tower. She was expecting a couple akalak, but they wouldn't be here till the afternoon. When she saw a red head human woman walk into the lobby. She felt a tap of her shoulder, and she turned around and saw Urinisic standing behind her. He said quietly to the konti, “Sovus told me to tell you to send her up as soon as possible, so good luck...”

The konti watched the Cerulean walk up the stairs, and she turned her attention to the woman who entered the tower. Standing up, Clarissa straightened out her white cotton pants legs, ran her webbed hand through her long white hair, and walked over to the red haired woman. She was wearing a white coat with a line of brass buttons in the front of the cotton coat. She gave the woman a welcoming smile and asked softly, “Thank you for coming to the Oathmaster's Tower. Why don't you sit? My name is Clarissa. May I ask you your name? If you are interested in the Nakivak program, I can answer a few introductory questions about the program, but if you want more details, I suggest you talk to the Oathmaster Tuvos Jerusc.” The konti waves her hand to two cushioned chairs in the lobby.

5th, Spring, 518 AV

The Kelvic couldn’t help but ring her thin fingers together nervously. The building wasn’t particularly intimidating, but she supposed it wasn’t just the structure before her causing it. The entire city was new, and entirely the opposite of Endrykas. She hadn’t been terribly fond of the grassland, but it had been something the wolf was accustomed to. The rather large number—they called themselves Akalak?—might have also added to the nerves. Despite their size, however, they had treated her well… especially when the girl considered the fact they had saved her life out in the grass where she had become thoroughly lost.

Leaving Endrykas alone with no skills to survive had been a rather stupid move on her part.

It was by the generosity of the hunters who found her that she was even here at all. They kept her safe, even fed until they could return to Riverfall. She owed them there was no doubt about that, but in the back of her mind she could hear a voice insisting it was more than just her life she owed them. Endrykas had only been a mild view of what life was like when winter failed to come the first time. She didn’t want to imagine what the grassland would look like as Spring pushed onward without another winter. People were suffering everywhere…

Shaking her head sharply Alek realized she had stalled just outside the doors. Forcing her fingers apart she grasped the handle of the door and pulled the heavy wood. It didn’t resist her nearly as much as she was expecting and with a deep breath, she slipped inside. The lobby appeared to be as simple as the outside, but the inspection was quickly cut short as her sensitive ears picked up low voices just off to one side. She couldn’t make out what was said, but the Kelvic turned to face the woman as she stood up from her desk.

In an action that was entirely habit the wolf pulled her hands behind her back, the back of her left pressing firmly into the palm of her right. Her shoulders pulled straight and Alek did her best to flash the woman a small smile despite feeling the high-strung emotions that were built into her very core since she had left Avanthal. As she approached Alek couldn’t help but notice the woman was different than the human females she was used to. The low light didn’t define them well, but she could make out the lines of scales along the woman’s face and she was so focused on them she barely heard the woman insist she sit.

Luckily enough she caught herself gawking. Squeezing her eyes shut for a moment Alek felt her face flare with heat before awkwardly sitting in the offered chair. Her fingers moved from her back to her knees and the Kelvic pulled a deep breath meant to calm the beating of her heart. “I’m… Alekxandra Winterflame. The Akalak who found me mentioned I might be able to repay them for finding me out in the Sea of Grass. I had gotten lost.” It was rather impressive that she had managed to keep her tone steady, and not squeak the words out by the tightness of her throat.

Her jaw worked from side to side for a moment before her shoulders heaved slightly. “I’m afraid I don’t know much of anything about being a… Nakivak? But seeing as these men saved my life—in more ways than one—I figured there had to be something I could do to return the favor. Perhaps I should start off with the simplest question. Just what is a Nakivak? I mean is it a job or…?” And before she could help it the next question fell out of her mouth. “And if you don’t mind… what race might you be? I’ve never seen anyone like you before?” The Kelvic winced at her own rudeness. It seemed some things never changed, her brother would have smacked her upside the head for such a question. Instead, the Kelvic shot the Konti a shy smile. “I’m sorry. That wasn’t very nice was it?”

Clarissa gracefully sat in the chair and crossed her legs as she watched the human looking woman nervously sit in the chair next to her. The konti gave her a comforting smile as she could tell the potential Nakivak was nervous. All women tend to be nervous coming into the Oath Master's tower. She listened to the woman introduce herself as Alekxandra Whiteflame. It was curious name to her because it sound Vantha, but she didn't have any tell tale signs of Vantha from the shimmering black hair, soft features, and color changing eyes. She looked like every other ordinary human. She was definitely pretty, so attractiveness will help her secure contract holders, but she was a little to thin. If she wished to carry a akalak child to term, she will need to put some meat on her bones. She mentioned that she heard from the Akalak that they suggested if she should become a Nakivak to repay them. Guilt of owning a personal debt to her saviors could be a good motivator for her join.

When Alekxandra asked what she was racially. Clarissa was kind of taken back at first, but she quickly regained her composer and said softly, “I am a konti. I was born here in Riverfall, but my mother comes from Mura.” Clarissa shook her head and continued in the same tone, “No, I don't mind. If you never met one of my race, anyone would be naturally curious of one us. You shouldn't be embarrassed to ask especially from me.”

Clarissa put her white hair behind her ears, revealed her gills on her neck, and said with a nod, “It is completely fine that you don't know much about the program. A lot of women who come to us at first are unfamiliar about a Nakivak. Technically, a Nakivak is a woman who has been contracted by the Akalak and Riverfall to sire children for them.” The konti let it sink for the young woman and said softly, “I know the definition is a lot to take in, but if you become a Nakivak, you would be doing a great service to Riverfall and Akalak race as a whole. A lot of young Akalak get to a point in their lives when they want to be fathers, but it takes a lot of time to romance a potential mate, so they contract a Nakivak to be the surrogate mother for their child, so they can fulfill this desire to start a family. ” Clarissa said with a smile, “Honestly, I think being a Nakivak is the most selfless thing a women could do. Especially for a race made up of only men.”

Looking at the young woman, Clarissa said bluntly, “Obviously your services to Riverfall would not go unrewarded. You will be paid handsomely for every healthy akalak child that you give birth too, and you will have no maternal obligations to the child after he is born. The contract holder will take all parental responsibility for the child, and you will be free to live your life without the burden of child.”

Clarissa just sat in her chair watching the red hair women with blank expression on her face. She wondered if the woman was human in the first place because she knew human's didn't have a high chance of carrying a akalak to term. However, kelvic and konti do have a high chance of carrying a akalak child to term. Taking the healer asked, “Are you human, Alekxandra?”

A Konti. The wolf stared blankly at the woman for a moment as her mind began to question just how many races existed that she was unaware of. Avanthal had its share of traders that were unusual, to say the least, but the wolf herself had never gone out of her way to interact with them. They had little to do with her day to day life back then. Now she was beginning to wish she had paid more attention. Even Endrykas has been quite the shock when she had first arrived. She was silently thankful as well the Konti had taken her question in stride. Offending the people in a new city was not the way to start a new life.

The Kelvic couldn’t help but eye the gills that came into view as Clarissa’s hair was pushed aside, though she did attempt to be far more discreet with her eyes than her mouth. They only widened a fraction when the woman mentioned just what a Nakivak really was. Someone that became pregnant for the sole purpose to give that child away to the father? For a moment the idea of it—of her doing such a thing for someone she knew nothing of—seemed like an idea beyond her capabilities. It was only the mention of selflessness that caused the idea of refusal to come to a halt.

It wasn’t just the idea of helping this particular race. It was the nagging in the back of her mind… something that had plagued her since the first missed winter. Alek felt many things, but it always seemed difficult to pin down just what she truly felt, or what she felt was held against her. The mark that darkened the back of her left hand rendered the Kelvic torn. The desire to help those affected and to hate those that killed the people from her true home. She had no idea if her people in this city had been slaughtered like they had been in Endrykas—did she even have the right to be angry about that anymore?

Part of her understood why her people were the target. Another part even felt guilty, as though she [i]was[i] part of the problem. It was guilt that often the hardest to deal with day in and out. Directly how many people had died because of Morwen? The queen she had chosen to follow with all her heart and mind. Was she just as complicit in her choice?

The question of her own race caught the Kelvic off guard, ripping her from her repetitive train of thoughts to focus back on the task at hand. A small voice in the back of her mind still echoed faintly that this was an insane idea to even entertain but the wolf ignored it in favor of shaking her head lightly.

“No. My family was adoptive from…” The words fell off as her voice wavered. She had not gone out of her way to hide the back of her hand since she had taken her seat, but the Kelvic lifted her left hand and twisted it so the gnosis mark was clearly visible to the Konti. If she was going to even give this any real consideration then there was no need to hide something that would be impossible to later. “I am Kelvic, but my family had been in Avanthal.”

“I’m not sure how this city handled the absence of two winters. It’s probably best I don’t know, unless this greatly affects my future here. Despite the mark… I’d like to make something of myself.” It had taken far too much time for her to find a place to settle. The plains had not suited her, though she was entirely too new to Riverfall to know if this was to be a good home either. Alek had to admit however that she hadn’t really tried to make a life since she had left Avanthal. So many excuses...

Honesty would be her best chance if her mark influenced her chances of becoming a Nakivak. She was tired of running, of hiding. Perhaps this would get her thrown out of the city, or worse. The Akalak men who had brought her in hadn’t seemed to care, but perhaps it hadn’t been their place. She couldn’t know the consequences—and now it wouldn’t matter. But the question posed about her race brought about its own reply as her hand lingered in the air. The girls' eyebrow furrowed and she let her head cock to one side in a rather canine fashion as once again another question fell from her lips before she could properly think it through. “What does my being human or not have to do with giving someone a child?”

Clarissa listened to Alekxandra tell her that she was from Avanthal and marked by Morwen. The konti could tell the woman was nervous about her gnosis mark and rightfully so. If she wasn't a kelvic, she would be stuck in the Oath Master's tower the rest of her natural life. Regardless, she wasn't human, so her mark will not be a problem in Riverfall. However, the konti decided to admit, “Riverfall didn't want the wrath of the other seasons coming down on us, so the vantha in the city were dealt with swiftly, but you have no need to worry since you are kelvic. If you become a Nakivak, you won't have to worry about you mark either. The city of Riverfall will protect you because of your selfless act for them.” When the young kelvic asked about her question about being a human, Clarissa wasn't going to lie to young woman. She needed to know that being pregnant with akalak child tended to take a full year before they are able to give birth. This tended to cause complications or death for the mother if they are human.

The konti looked at Alekxandra and said sadly, “There is a reason that the city started this program because Alakak children take a full year to come to term. Most woman of all races tend to want to shy away from wanting to be pregnant for a whole year. Not to mention the complications from the pregnancy. In humans, the complications triple and death can be the result. Part of the reason Alakak tend to not get into relationships with a human mate. If you fell in love with someone, would you really want to watch your lover or spouse die in childbirth? It is heartbreaking for them and everyone involved. On the other hand, Konti and Kelvics have little complication in giving birth to a akalak child and the pregnancy tend make it to the full term.” She smiled at her and said with a nod, “I asked because I care about the safety of the mother, and I hate to see tragedy when a woman selflessly gives herself to help Riverfall.”

Clarissa leans back in his chair, folds her hands in her lap, and asked with smile on her face, “Being a Nakivak gives you a chance to help a race of all men have a future. Your son could grow up to be a great man in Riverfall one day, Alekxandra. Your legacy will live on for centuries and his sons will continue that legacy well into the future.” Looking at Alekxandra, the konti said with nod, “Even if you are just a surrogate for the child, you will be well compensated by the city. The amount of money is enough to finance your future dreams. Your sacrifice will not be without reward. I can't tell you how much because the Oathmaster handles all the legal stuff involved.” She smiled at the young woman and asked, “Are you interested in becoming a Nakivak? If you have anymore questions, you should talk to the Oathmaster...”

It was the first time in a long time the Kelvic had heard she didn’t need to worry about her mark. She had almost been certain that revealing it would have doomed her chances for any sort of freedom in the city. An invisible weight was lifted off her shoulders and the Kelvic managed to straighten her spine in the chair, making her a little taller. A foreign emotion filled her that she hadn’t felt in quite some time. Confidence. Without the worry, it was amazing how easily the decision could come.

“Pregnant? A whole year?” It did seem abnormally long, but in all honesty, she had never paid attention to the length of a pregnancy in the first place. She had never been privy to friends that had been, nor had any of her sisters carried children. Wasn’t a human pregnancy nearly as long? Either way, pregnancy was actually the least of her worries. It was the connection she would undoubtedly form for the child… and the trials that would come with this particular childbirth.

Death was something the Kelvic had become accustomed to—perhaps even a little numb. She had avoided such a fate for so long it seemed to hold all the cards. Running away, whether from this tower or the entire city, was exhausting and certainly no life. It had given nothing to her and taken anything she had been given since the first missing winter. The opportunity to change not just herself but the life for someone else…

A legacy was something the redhead had never thought of before. She had barely managed to bond with someone, much less the idea of starting a family. But it wouldn’t be truly hers would it? This male would take the child and pay her for it. She would not raise it as her own. As this thought pressed against her mind, another question surfaced beneath it. What would her family had thought of this opportunity? Would it be her rushing in without a level head or a possibility of survival? Neither answer mattered in the end—they were gone. The only thing she could do was live with what they taught her.

Avanthal had been a harsh environment. Never ending cold, and days without sun. When it came to survival you did what was required or you died. While this was vastly different the base still seemed the same, at least in her mind. The Kelvic may not raise the child, but the sacrifice remained. Deep down she felt this was something she could give without having to further lose herself. The choice very well could be wrong, could take everything left of her, but she needed to try regardless.

“Okay.” The word came out as a rush, almost a whisper. Clearing her throat she stood, attempting to brush off some imaginary dirt from her dress as she gathered her courage. If she played at the idea any longer she would find a reason to back out. She always did. “Take me to him then.” For a moment her hands shook as her mind fully took on the implications of her agreement but she pushed them aside to look the Konti in the eye. “Perhaps I can fill a void taken from someone else. Give something more valuable…”
