Appearance:

John Amber, to put it frankly, is short. He is 5’5” and a bit husky. He has a warm, jolly, and inviting face; not overly plump, mind you, but charming nonetheless. He has jet black hair, and a leathery tan from spending his life out of doors. His beard, however, is salt and pepper, belying his age. John has a boisterous laugh that is infectious for all whom hear. His eyes are a mesmerizing hazel, almost as if the green-brown of his iris shift ratios depending on the light. Despite his stout proportions, John’s fingers are very dexterous, being able to perform impressive slight of hand he has practiced since childhood.

Character Concept

John Amber is devout. He is dedicated to a set of principles that, though he might not be perfect, are always at the forefront of everything he does. He loves to make others laugh and tries to bring joy to all those whom he sees. Often, when people think of devout men they picture a dour, serious, self-important kind of fellow. Though at times John can be that, he focuses on life, harmony, and joy. He is a pacifist at heart, and always finds himself at the right place at the right time to lend his voice to whatever cause needs him.

Character History

John Amber grew up in a loving home. His parents were very peaceful people. His father didn’t have a lot. He wasn’t rich, wasn’t successful, but one thing was sure, he loved his wife. John saw that growing up that his parents cared deeply for each other and for him. They would often go to visit his grandparents (mother’s side) when there was free time to do so. John loved to sit on his grandfather’s lap and listen to all of the old stories, both personal and ancient.

His family was deeply religious. Many clerics have come from the Amber household, none too famous of course, but that didn’t stop his family’s devotion. His father’s family serves Kihala. While John was growing up, his father taught him the importance of all life, no matter what. They would often welcome strangers into their homes in need of shelter, protection, or care. His father’s family was committed to preserving all of life and counseling those who have lost loved ones. The Amber family are trusted friends of those who have experienced loss.

His mother on the other hand. Her whole family has struggled among those of other faiths. They belong to no cult, or organization; yet their belief is steadfast. They don’t have priests or an order; but their devotion is absolute. They are quiet in the face of adversity and long suffering in the midst of unanswered prayer. Though there is no proper religious organization, John’s mother places her faith on a fallen God: Aquiras. For generations and generations, her family has told stories of the protection granted by Aquiras. Though slain, his mother’s family is confident he will rise again and restore his place among the Gods. They don’t talk much about their beliefs. If anyone else in Mizahar remembered Aquiras at all, it was to remember his defeat at the hands of Sagallius, not to hope that he will be revived. However, his family will swear on Aquiras protection of travelers. His grandparents used to travel from city to city never fearing the wilderness, so sure of his protection they were. When John heard all these tales, he never knew the validity of any of it or if his grandparents were senile, but his mother believed them, and so did he.

John also had a little sister. While he grew up appreciating the stories his family told, his sister wanted none of them. As soon as she could she ran off to join some scam and he never heard from her again. Since she left, John has never stopped praying to both Kihala and Aquiras for her safe return. In fact, it was his sister’s rebellion that caused him to dive deeper and deeper into religion. The more he looked, the more he found.

Having been born and raised in Lhavit, John has a deep appreciation for ancient history and philosophy. He spent most of his boyhood, when not attending to people with his father, reading as much as he could, learning as much as he could. When he finally understood that Aquiras was for all purposes dead and could offer no assistance to any mortals, instead of smothering his faith it gave him great hope for the future.

Now, as an adult, John has chosen a somewhat different path. He grew tired of his parents waiting for people to come to them. Waiting. Always waiting. Indeed, people always found a way of coming to them. His father would praise Kihala for an opportunity to serve her, and his mother would praise Aquiras for bringing them safely to their door (regardless of the reality). John wanted to go out and meet people where they were. He was never good at waiting, his grandparents bred an insatiable wanderlust in him at an early age. He didn’t want people to come to him, he wanted to go to people.
