Tarn Alrenson

"Since it is so likely that children will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.”
--C.S. Lewis

Basic Information:

Race: Human

Age/Birthday: 23, 83rd day of autumn 498 AV

Gender: Male

Hometown: Sunberth

Starting City: Sunberth

Physical Description:
Tarn stands at 6’. His skin is a light tan, albeit fairer where his skin was not exposed to the sun in long days of work as a youth. His hair is dark brown and would be wavy if he didn’t keep it to a few inches at most, roughly chopped back with whatever knife there is at hand. His eyes are dark brown and his hands are calloused. Tarn possesses the lean, strong build of a man whose made his living through violence, for better or more likely for worse. Tarn usually walks with downcast eyes, yet his face gives the impression of a storm on the verge of breaking when given reason to rise to anger.

Character Concept:
Though downtrodden by harsh circumstances as a youth, Tarn has always maintained a curious, idealistic, perhaps even honorable streak. However, the means of his upbringing instilled in him a necessary ferocity, and sometimes a somewhat cold demeanor toward strangers, with a tongue sharpened by the streets.

Tarn ardently opposes any tyrannical or controlling power over people, a popular philosophy in his home city of Sunberth. However, he believes the chaotic anarchy of his city’s current state to be as much of a tyrant as any King. He believes conflict, while often terrible, is just as often necessary. Events regarding his enlistment with the Sun’s Birth, and his opposition in principle to many of their activities has recently led to a great deal of personal reflection regarding his personal beliefs regarding ethics. However, Tarn gives no quarter where he doesn't think it's due.

Tarn enjoys watching the ocean, the sky, listening to stories (from anybody), and preserving innocence. He is a people watcher. He distrusts magic, though he wouldn't be inclined to call Sunberth's mobs should he happen to find a mage. If he decides killing needs done, he prefers to do it himself.

In the time he has spent in the Sun's Birth Dragoons, Tarn has become disillusioned of his dreams of honor in the life of a soldier. As a result he fights back the looming threat of depression and nihilism, clinging to any scrap of innocence he can find while also hiding it from the world in fear that it will be taken away or corrupted.

Character History:
Pre-Creation Summarized—Tarn was born in the fall, and his mother did not survive the following winter. Living with his father and grandfather in a meager dwelling, he learned to defend himself on the streets. Stories from his grandfather, (a soldier in Ordeck Silverbeard’s rebellion) gave the boy an idealistic view of war and soldiering. As soon as he was old enough, Tarn took a job as a shipwright’s apprentice down at the docks. While he worked hard, he took every opportunity to observe the diverse people working and passing through the city port. One day, his father and grandfather ran afoul a small local gang and were killed for the little money in their pockets and the clothes on their backs. Tarn, hardened by the news of what had happened, took the remaining possessions he could find useful, and slept in the workhouse of the shipwright, where he worked until he had enough money stashed away to outfit himself and join whatever group he thought had a chance at cleaning up Sunberth. That group just happened to be the Dragoon wing of the Sun’s Birth, where he advanced to the rank of Guardian.

Markings:
Tarn has the symbol of the Sun's Birth branded into the back of his right hand.

Religious Affiliations:
Tarn belongs to no particular sect, and currently worships no individual gods, though they have recently begun to interest him.

Magic Items

Tanroa Idol:
Details :
Tanroa - This figurine is of a woman possible in the middle of her life although her face looks remarkably young though her hair is silver. When animated, the statue moves with a grace that brings to mind the center of a calm, secluded lake. She speaks and acts much like an advisor, offering advice when she feels it is necessary. While she is more than happy to engage in conversation, she tends to steer it toward talk of the future rather than the past. Gnosis: 1 mark Tanroa. Skills: Fortunetelling: 10, Philosophy: 10, History: 10. Lore: Tanroa, How the present is affected by the past and how it influences the future. Magical Ability: The statue can take any moment in time that it observes and recreate that moment on a piece of paper or parchment in perfect detail. The image appears in perfect detail. Amulet of Desire:
Details :
The Amulet of Desire. A stranger will find you wherever you are. It might be a begger who offers you a gift, a monkey who throws this at you, or in some strange way this item will be passed to you. It is a necklace. Over time and through roleplay you will come to understand how this item works. When you hold it in your hand and turn a careful circle until you stand in whichever direction the person, place, or thing that you desire will cause the amulet to glow. The person place or thing you desire can change moment to moment. It will continue to glow as long as you concentrate on that object of desire and point in the direction it lies relative to you. This item will only work if you are within a 10 mile distance of the one thing you desire. (Acquired in Challenge:

Backpack of Voiding:
Details :
The Backpack of Voiding can be of any color (brown, natural leather) though the basic shape will remain as pictured. It can hold anything within it as long as the thing can fit through the bag's opening to disappear inside. It weighs as if it is an empty backpack and has no limit in terms of what can go in. One must concentrate on what one wants to retrieve from the inside of it when reaching in or else the contents coming to ones hand will be random. This backpack will not preserve items such as food. Any garbage or food that rots in it will cause the contents to smell and a stench to emit from it once the top flap is thrown open. The same might be said of soiled sweaty or dirty clothing, especially socks and shoes. (Acquired in challenge: http://www.mizahar.com/forums/topic72794-30.html ) Claimed: http://www.mizahar.com/forums/topic72842.html

Lion-Claw Gauntlet:
Details :
Appearing as a massive lion’s paw, this gauntlet is covered in fur wrapped around a flexible metal frame. It is magecrafted with a structural enhancement making it quite durable; to the point that it works as a buckler shield. The fingers are tipped with claws and there are hooked protrusions on the knuckles. These protrusions are a part of an internal mechanism that, when the palm of the gauntlet is pressed, shoots the protrusions forward up to 15 feet. They are connected by thin strands of isurian steel that can hold up to 200 lbs of weight; allowing the gauntlet to act as a grappling hook. A second tap on the palm will retract the protrusions and pull the wearer to wear the protrusions have hooked. While the gauntlet can lift the wearer, it cannot pull things toward it. (From Challenge:
http://www.mizahar.com/forums/post539165.html#p539165) Unclaimed
