Character Concept

Tazrael is a young, adventurous botanist who works in the gardens of the Dusk Tower while exploring the flora of Lhavit and the surrounding forests on his off time. He has a natural curiosity about plant life and discovering previously unknown flora or finding rare plants is a passion of his while he is not attending to his duties at the gardens of the Dusk Tower.

He is still young and inexperienced, so he is not yet very successful at finding many of the rare plants that he searches for. He has a great affinity for the Dusk Tower, mainly due to his father’s longtime employment by the family and the respect they showed at his father’s funeral. He is content with his employment at their gardens despite being a little bored with the slower pace that line of work brings.

Tazrael can be too adventurous, not recognizing his limits which may get him into trouble in the wild and civilization alike. He possesses a somewhat pretentious attitude about his hobby of being a self-identifying "adventure botanist" that can put off humble florists, gardeners, and herbalists that rank among his peers. He also can be self-righteous and defensive when it comes to nature and openly critical about the creep of civilization.

Character History

Tazrael “Taz” Briarthyl is a native Lhavitian who comes from a long line of Lhavitian greenthumbs. Like his father before him, his father’s father and so on, Tazrael has pursued a profession concerned with the abundance of plantlife through Lhavit. His father, Kaarael Briarthyl, was a respected gardener in the city who was employed by the Dusk Tower for the majority of his life. His grandfather, Reedwine Briarthyl, was a florist who was known for making elaborate floral arrangements for celebrations and festivals held in the city, all from what he grew in his own twelve foot by twelve foot garden.

His mother, Gadira was from a vastly different background. She was the only daughter in a long lineage of sailormen and, prior to giving birth to Tazrael, she worked a variety of maritime jobs including braiding rope for ships, shucking oysters, and a fishwife. Friends and family of the Tazrael’s parents would often joke that Gadira was the feisty pirate while Kaarael was the stoic oak tree. It was often, and still is often, remarked about Tazrael that he has the “looks of his father and the personality of his mother.”

Unfortunately, when Tazrael was only eight years old, his mother was aboard a small sloop owned by her father that was lost at sea during an otherwise pleasurable outing after being engulfed by an unexpected storm.

Luckily for Tazrael, he had accompanied his father to work that fateful morning. However, naturally, Gadira’s surprise death affected both of them deeply. Tazrael would note to his friends that his father refused to even face in the direction of the sea for the remainder of his life.

Kaarael was much older than Gadira and passed away of unknown complications when Tazrael was seventeen. By that time, Tazrael had taken to assisting his father more and more with his work due to Kaarael’s arthritis, which included occasionally helping his father with gardening work at the Dusk Tower.

However, Tazrael had never adjusted to the lifestyle of his father. He had a love for plants, a trait that seemed to follow the name Briarthyl, and even animals, but found his father’s gardening work to be too boring for the adventurous spirit his mother passed on to him.

When he was able, Tazrael would slip away from home and work and explore around Lhavit and the surrounding Alpine Wilderness, studying the various plants he would come across and occasionally bring back home a trophy of some plant he did not recognize. While these “adventures” often unnerved his cautious father, sometimes Kaarael would be amused by one of Tazrael’s “trophies”, leave their cottage for a few minutes, and return with a snipping of the same plant taken from a garden he had planted somewhere in the neighborhood. Kaarael Briarthyl’s funeral was attended by many florists and gardeners, along with members of the Dusk family and students of the Dusk Tower.

While his father’s death was by no means a surprise, Tazrael had to face the reality that he had lost both of his parents while he was still very young. Perhaps as a way to cope with his loss, he decided to take his Briarthyl name serious, in honor of his parents and perhaps even more so in honor of his father who filled a large hole in his life after the passing of his mother.

Tazrael began to retreat more and more into the wilderness in search of rarer plants to be studied, sold, kept, and sometimes gifted. While not yet having stumbled across any plants that would find a willing buyer in Lhavit, Tazrael dreams of one day being respected as Lhavit's premier botanist. Despite these lofty goals, he has promised himself that he if stumbles across a truly unique plant, or a plant so rare that he deems worth protecting, that he would do all in his power to protect it from being taken from its natural state. While he loves his city, he recognizes the damage that encroachment of civilization brings upon the natural realm he loves to retreat to.

He still finds the life of the average gardener, the life of his father, too slow paced for his liking. However, he has followed in his father's footsteps in working the gardens of the Dusk Tower.
