Vashiel 'Vash' Longarm
Appearance
Race: Kelvic
Gender: Male
Age: 7 (effectively 18)
Birthday: 12, Summer, 511
Birthplace: Sunberth
Appearance: The most prominent feature on Vash's face is his large, pronounced nose. It fits well with his long face, though it conveys an intense appearance. His eyes are slightly wide set and are the easiest way to identify him as Kelvic. His pupils are a red-orange hue that mimics his animal form. Overall Vash's face might not be considered typically 'handsome' but it has a certain unique appeal.
Vash is a tall young man, nearly a full head taller than other men. His body is a medium build, edging towards skinny most of the time. Sunberth neither allows sufficient excess to gain fat nor does it tolerate the sickly and infirm.
Vash's animal form is that of a carrion king. (California Condor) The carrion king is a buzzard like any other, but for its size. Its wings stretch longer than a man is tall. (about 10 feet) His feathers are uniformly black except for some of the white under feathers of his wings. His hooked beak is powerful, capable of tearing through tough hide and ripping flesh with ease.
Character Concept
Bluntly put, Vash's life revolves around death. His core philosophy is simple. What's dead is dead. A person who has passed may be mourned and their life celebrated but their body is now an object. Due to his knowledge of malediction, Vash sees it as a potentially useful object. This belief in the body as an object leads Vash down a somewhat dark path in regards to life. He tries to remember that, while death is a natural part of life it is still precious and should not be extinguished without need. Still, he sometimes catches himself looking at people as potential components for his macabre magic.
Aside from this, Vash enjoys the company of others for the most part. He is somewhat starved for personal connection due to the solitary nature of his work and hobbies. His talents with conversation are a bit rusty, but those able to look past this will find a loyal friend with a unique worldview. Vash has not bonded in the true sense, and he's not sure if he's looking to currently.
Vash was shaped by the harsh world of Sunberth. While he doesn't go out of his way to steal or exploit others if an opportunity presents itself he isn't going to turn it down. The way he sees it if he doesn't someone else will in a moment. If anyone is going to profit, might as well be him.
Character History
Vash's father, Tzail, was a hawk Kelvic. His mother, Cordes, was a human. They were bonded and married, as in love as was possible. They raised Vash in a typical human fashion, his father working to make sure his son developed into his own person before becoming bonded. Vash took nearly 6 years to mature fully, so this was no easy feat. His father had aged into a middle-aged man in this time, reflecting the lifespan of his animal form.
Vash's father taught him everything he was able. As a young boy, many of Vash's fondest memories were soaring the skies with his father. Other memories were his father teaching him his trade, learning how to butcher various animals for easy consumption. Vash became accustomed to death and violence at an early age. His mother only added to this.
Cordes was a maledictor, or a legate. She made talismans out of the remains of the dead, as her father before her had done. Her magical heritage stretched back generations. She told Vash stories of how, in times past, her family had been very influential but with the fall of magic and malediction specifically they had fallen so far from grace that such times were but a memory or a legend. It was impossible to say which.
Cordes practiced her craft carefully and secretively, teaching Vash to do the same. She did not rob graves or seek the remains of people, limiting her talismans to animals. She sought to not draw attention to herself, for to do so would invite violence on her family. Still, magic was to be used. She had trusted fences and sources who would find buyers of her wares. As much as people within Sunberth distained magic, everyone wanted an edge of some kind.
Despite this caution, one day someone learned of her activity who was less tolerant. Vash awoke to the sound of a struggle. He crept in fear to his parent's room, peering through the cracked door. He couldn't say what had happened precisely, but the result was obvious. He saw blood, saw several men inside striking at his parents bed with weapons. He was caught in a mixture of fear and rage. Part of him wanted to run, part wanted to burst in and exact revenge. It was upon seeing his mother's lifeless eyes that his course was decided. They had to same empty gaze as all the animals he had butchered, and her words rang in his ears. What's dead is dead.
Vash fled his house, carrying only what he was able to in his animal form. Some money and clothing and a trinket. He should have left Sunberth, but it was all he knew. It was a large enough city that he could avoid his old haunts in case whoever came for his parents knew of his existence. His father had taught him enough to work as an apprentice for a butcher, allowing a modest income. He lived in tent city, though is currently attempting to save enough to purchase a house of his own.
Vash practices his malediction with less caution than his mother did, despite her fate. Her caution did not allow her to escape the ire of the populace. It was better to be feared than fearful, and Vash would learn enough of his craft to make the small minded more fearful of his wrath than whatever vague curse he was going to bring on them with his practice. He had much left to learn, and was resolved to learn it quickly.
