Ruth Wavedancer

Appearance

Name: Ruth Wavedancer (Nee Snowsong)Image
Race: Human, mixed (Vantha-Human)
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Birthday: 19, Winter, 501 AV.
Birthplace: Avanthal

Appearance: Ruth took after her mother - a blessing given she was not her supposed father's child. Matching rich skin tone, matching thick curls of black hair - even as a baby she was born with a full head. She's tall for a Vantha and - the giveaway - her eyes do not change colour, nor is there a sheen of purple in her hair as her family have.

Her hands are dotted with tiny cuts where her fingers have slipped during crafting. She tends to wear feminine clothes complete with jewellery and scarves day-to-day, but rolls up her sleeves and dons whatever is practical when she works, hair twisted out of the way without care for vanity.

Character Concept

Ruth is a daydreamer. Her mind wanders when she's supposed to pay attention, she fidgets when she should be sitting still. Picking at her clothes and playing with her hair are her norm. It's only when her mind is locked onto a creative task that she becomes utterly focused - and then nothing short of the project in question being set on fire could snap her out of it. She could spend one day happily meandering around the city, her mind wandering as well as her feet, and forget to complete half the tasks she planned thanks to the dozens of tangents she trails off on. And then spend however long it takes locked in her room working on her newest project from start to finish, barely taking breaks.

When the muse hits, she succumbs.

Although a sweet and friendly woman by nature, Ruth's automatic trust of strangers has been shadowed by the hunt on the Vantha, and the unknown statuses of her parents and husband. Wary of strangers now and private in a way she had not been before, Ruth prefers to keep her matters to herself, as much as she enjoys learning about other people. The language barrier hampers this too - her husband was the bilingual, and her ability in Common is not good.

Character History

Bastard daughter of an unknown merchant and a married Snowsong woman, Ruth ran into troubles from the moment her parents realised her eyes weren't changing colour. While her mother's husband nominally put her heritage aside, including passionately defending her and her mother whenever comments were made, he did treat her a little differently to her siblings - and he knew it, and did his best not to. When he hugged her a little less than the others he would turn around and walk back in to hold her even tighter. When he waved her excitement aside because he was 'too busy', but put his work aside to talk to his biological children, he would notice and deliberately seek Ruth out later to spend time with.

When she was sixteen, a sailor arrived in Avanthal - a young man named Krill Wavedancer. He was handsome and charming and when he asked for her hand in marriage, the bride price was high enough that her parents eventually accepted as he courted her for months - with her tentative permission. He stayed in Avanthal from then, a condition of the marriage, but a year later got a job on a boat he had worked on before. Ruth, not wanting to leave her husband and loving the idea of travelling a little herself, agreed enthusiastically to go with him. They promised Ruth's parents she would return safely within a year and they left together, intending to do so.

Winter 516 changed this plan, although they didn't know it at the time as they were between cities. They were lucky that the ship owner was such a close friend of Krill's, and that Ruth bore no marks of the Vantha. Even so, as nobody had seen the need to be anything other than forthcoming about her origin when it had come up in conversation before, the ship made a hasty exit from the city they were in, and they were soon travelling again. They spent most of the time working with the ship, going from place to place, stopping for no more than a season or two as the ship did in different ports, and trying to ignore the fate that had likely befallen her family.

Eventually, though, they stopped. After arriving in Lhavit they decided not to continue their travels, the fear of discovery having dispelled somewhat from the years of being unnoticed.
