Race: Human Birthday & Age : Season of Summer, Day 13, 493 AV (17 years old) Gender: Male
Physical Description
Octavius is a natural athlete and his body has been sculpted by years of rigorous training and exercise. Unlike most warriors, his physique is more suited towards nimbleness and agility rather than brute strength. His gray, contemplative eyes attest to his thoughtful nature, and if he was not a knight, he imagines that he might have one day become a philosopher. Like most military men, he prefers to keep his face cleanly-shaven and his black hair cut short and neat. His facial features, while handsome and youthful, aren't as physically intimating as those of his fellow Knights.
Character Concept
Educated by some of the finest teachers in Syliras, Octavius is intelligent and perceptive. The fields of philosophy and history piqued his interest the most as a child, as they meshed well with his personal sense of ethics and duty. Octavius’ deeply contemplative nature is often mistaken for indecisiveness or even cowardice by those who are not familiar with him. Despite his extensie training in the art of combat, his first instinct is to try and resolve a confrontation through non-violent means. Octavius is fond of discussing philosophy and politics, though these conversations can quickly devolve into nothing more than screaming matches if he is tested too pointedly. For example, he has been reprimanded several times for questioning whether the citizens of Syliras should have more political power. Born a commoner, he is somewhat self-conscious about his standing in society, even though the Syliran Kinghts hold no such prejudice. Considering himself a civilized man, Octavius abhors random violence and can’t stand bullies. His childhood and upbringing have inspired in him a sense of justice, and he will never hesitate to stand up for those who cannot defend themselves. He is ambitious and hopes to one day attain enough political power or notoriety to enact real change in Syliras.
Character History
Pre-Creation :
Unlike most Knights, Octavius was not born in Syliras. His family actually originated from the farmlands outside of Sunberth, where life tended to be short and unhappy. His father was a destitute farmhand who worked hard but simply couldn't provide for such a large family with his meager earnings. As a child, Octavius could only watch as his older siblings came of age and left for a better life in Sunberth, only to be seduced by the toxic atmosphere of the city. Some of his siblings became criminals and prostitutes, while others became addicted to gambling and drugs. The lucky ones returned; the unlucky ones returned in coffins.
Octavius tried to support his father and keep the family together, but there was simply too much lawlessness in the region for any family to escape unscathed. After years of watched his family fall apart, he realized that there was only one way he was going to escape the dreary life of a common criminal. Join the ranks of the Syliran Knights. The Knights weren't exactly a rare sight in the region, and often it seemed like they were the only ones fighting against the bandits, slavers, and crimelords. Most people from Sunberth considered them nuisances, but Octavius considered them a glimpse into the past; paragons of Pre-Valterrian heroism. More importantly, they accepted those of common birth and didn't ask for payment from the parents.
Octavius' life as a Page was initially difficult. He was a young, rebellious kid from Sunberth who was unaccustomed to the orderly, nature of Syliras. He spoke out of turn, argued with his superiors, and generally always managed to do the wrong thing at precisely the worst time. Fortunately, when it seemed as if none of instructors actually believed in him, he was assigned to train under Ser Reginald Brock. Instead of fighting Octavius' inquisitive nature, he encouraged it. When Octavius questioned him about the practices of the Syliran Knights, he defended them analytically instead of demanding that the boy silence himself. When Octavius revealed that he was a commoner who could barely read, the Knight spent countless hours teaching him. Ser Reginald even encouraged Octavius to study pre-Valterrian history and philosophy, and the two would often have lively debates on a number of subjects. Under the Knight's tutelage, Octavius became disciplined and strong, and when it came time for him to be assigned a Patron Knight, the choice was obvious.
Octavius and Ser Reginald began to focus almost entirely on combat training from that moment forward. A Knight was expected to protect the innocent, and that usually meant meeting swords with some truly frightening criminals. Although he began to develop more muscle as he grew older, the young squire quickly realized that he was never going to be as strong or powerful as his instructor. Instead, he was taught to rely on technique and speed to augment his swordsmanship. His ability to fight in full plate and effectively use a shield would never be his strength, but his natural skill with a blade was something to be admired. Now, as he is coming of age, the day when he must be brought before the Windoak is fast approaching and he must prove once and for all, if he is the knight he believes himself to be.
Although not technically a family heirloom, Octavius cherishes a cloak given to him by his Patron Knight. The woolen cloak is lined with fur, dyed a deep purple, and accented with gold-embroidery. It is a symbol of Knight-Nobility, and reminds Octavius that he has risen above his common birth.
