Nicholas Mar'tel Basic Information Race: Akalak Birthday & Age: Born the 8th of Fall 434 AV(74 years old) Gender: Male Physical Description Nicholas stands at 213 cm(6.9 feet), and he weighs 112 kg (245 pound), this makes him a very imposing man. As all Akalak, Nicholas is in very good shape, and takes care of his body. As a swordsman oils his blade, so must Nicholas stay in shape. Even though he is muscular, he seems to be lithe as well, and the fighting style he employs focuses more on agility than brute force. He has several scars on his upper body, but none seem to have ever been serious wounds, they all come from his many fights. As most Akalak, he has no body hair, but he has no hair on his head either. Nicholas’ eyes are black, and his weathered face makes them seem harsher than they are. Character Concept Nicholas is harsh and stoic man, and he is a fervent worshipper of Wysar and Akajia, and while many Akalak are bothered by their dark halves, Nicholas has chosen to use it. Through discipline he has not subjugated his other personalia, but willingly releases control in some situations, trying to understand his other half, and his dark brother’s ferocity in battle has served him well many times. Still, when provoked enough, or in great emotional or physical pain, he can’t keep control either. Nicholas believes that everyone has a place in society, and that no one should attempt to rise above his station, but also that everyone is equally important. Without the warrior, there is no one to protect, but without the smith there is no one to make his weapons and armour, and without the miner there is no one to gather ore for the smith. Nicholas also believes that in this time, there needs to be someone to help people find their role, because without a role there is no purpose, and without a purpose you don’t really live. Nicholas is however troubled, that he cannot find a purpose for himself. Character History Nicholas was born in Riverfall, the second son of his very lucky father with a Drykas Nakivak. From an early age he showed exceptional interest and skill in the arts of unarmed combat, but he never had any friends. His older brother was more of a craftsman and was both merry and social, following in the steps of his father. Nicholas never had any interest in it, and would rather spend his time trying to improve his fighting skills. Nicholas, fiteen and still friendless, was surprised to find himself invited to hunt with three other boys. He accepted, and they all set out for their Rite of Trial. The hunt took four days, and all returned unscathed, but Nicholas seemed harder than ever before. Unsurprisingly he announced that he would be a warrior. His father was extremely proud, two of his sons lived, one a jewel crafter and one a warrior, but he worried on behalf of Nicholas, as he grew ever more reclusive, never talking to anyone except his father. When Nicholas was 24, he realized that he could not suppress his other half and he became worried that it might take control, and he would end up a Cerulean. Refusing to let it happen, he decided that he would strike a balance between them, and use his dark brother’s ferocity. At this time he also became even more devout, worshipping both Wysar and Akajia, the only two who he felt could help him gain enough control. For the next few decades he tried to control himself, and this training served him well when he was to undertake his Rite of Manhood. He had cornered the Zith, and he knew well that a cornered beast is extremely dangerous, and at night, without him expecting it, the Zith counter-attacked, charging him in the dark. It was a ferocious battle that followed, and when the Zith was certain it had won the battle, Nicholas willingly let his darker brother out, and his ferocity drove the Zith back. Nicholas pursued, once again cornering it, but this time he attacked the wounded Zith, and in a flurry of blows from both his fists, feet and Lakan, he killed the Zith. The next morning, Nicholas noticed the severity of his wounds, with several deep wounds and some broken bones. Limping back towards Riverfall, with only pieces of cloth as bandages, he almost collapsed at the gates, and was immediately taken to the infirmary. It took two months until he could run again, but he had completed the Rite, and he was officially a man. It was during this time that he realized that the “darker” half was not a curse, but a gift, it was only hard to control, but he swore before both Wysar, Akajia and all the other Gods that he would succeed in doing so. As the decades passed, Nicholas grew to be a very devout and very skilled warrior, but the only man he could speak to without getting in a fight was his father, and when he died, Nicholas was heartbroken. For the next few months he would fight with his brother, now the oldest member of their family, claiming that he didn’t honour their father, and his brother said Nicholas was a disgrace who hadn’t gotten a wife or a child even though he was over 70 years old, he himself had impregnated a Kelvic. It didn’t take long until he no longer spoke with his brother, and Nicholas started venturing out of Riverfall more often. It was during these ventures that he heard about The Syliran Knights and how they were forming a society. This would be Nicholas’ purpose, he told himself, and one day he packed up and left Riverfall without a word, for there was no one there he would speak with. |
