Basic Information

Race: Symenestra
Birthday & Age : Third day of Springer, 492 AV (19 years old)
Gender: Female

Physical Description

Nenai shares the pallid complexion of her people, and a network of gray veins are clearly visible on her palms, wrists, neck, along her spine and on the curve of the backs of her knees. She is lithe and willowy, with an obviously fragile and delicate bone structure. Her hair is naturally a deep black, and recently cropped. Her expression is naturally calm, as if she is constantly observing, but in truth she wears this practiced mask to avoid revealing to others that she's just as, if not more so, afraid of them than they might be of her people's reputation. Stands at 5''2 and weighs 115 lbs.

Character Concept

Nenai may come across as withdrawn and stand offish, but in truth yearns to gather a better understanding of everything and everyone around her. Curious to a fault, especially about children that don't kill by design. At the same time, she is frightened by her own physical frailty, and will not allow others to touch her unless she believes they won't attempt to harm her. This lack of basic trust is, of course, a huge road block in any attempts she makes to connect to those around her. Though she would never admit it to her family, she is equally afraid that she might poison and kill anyone of another species that she happens to take an interest in, so this enforced bubble is just as much for the sake of others as it is for her own.

Character History

Even before her oldest brother left for what would be his last Harvest, Nenai felt the urge to flee Kalinor, because she believed that it would be best for her Web if they were not associated with her. While her family happily used surrogates to carry their children, just as they had done for her birth, the practice made her feel woozy with guilt - which might be viewed as a weakness and, therefore, a dishonor to her Web. This certainly wasn't helped by the fact the she was a naturally gifted midwife, and therefore expected to help ensure the survival of her younger siblings, nieces and nephews during their births. She remembers each surrogate, screaming in agony as they experienced not only child birth, but their innards slowly melting into a soupy concoction that would be the killer infant's first meal. Eventually, once the baby was mostly out of the mother, Nenai couldn't stand to see the women suffer any longer and would sever their spine with her claws to give them a quicker, more merciful death. Of course, she botched the job the first few times she did it, leaving the mother still alive but at least numbed to the pain.

It was all too much for the gentle-hearted girl, who began to seek comfort in the ideals of the Esterians. The idea of Symenestra women carrying their own children safely to full term, living through the birth and getting to raise the product of themselves and their lover? It was so fantastic it made her head spin.

Years of watching the horror of surrogate child birth have cowed her, sucking any courage Nenai may have once had to offer herself up as a mother. She is quickly approaching her fertile years, but no matter how beautiful the idea of safe child birth is, she isn't about to be the first 'stepping stone' of that cycle. Her hesitation was only enforced by her mother's attempt to carry a child.

Nenai's Web recently became smaller, thanks to the disappearance of her older brother and the death of her mother. Without any new surrogates, and her father reaching the end of what could easily be his final fertile cycle, his wife chose to carry the baby herself. Despite her fear of losing the woman that had raised her, Nenai also instinctively understood her mothers decision, because it was for the good of the Web and the continuation of the species.

Needless to say, despite the efforts of Nenai and two more seasoned midwifes, the woman died during child birth. Her bouncing baby brother, just like all the Symenestra babies before him, promptly turned on their mother and drained her of her newly soupy insides.

Ashamed of the hatred she feels for the infant and her oldest brother, who's absence was the deciding factor in her mother's fatal decision, Nenai jumped at the chance to leave Kalinor to give her time to sort out her feelings, under the guise of looking for her brother.
