Appearance

Race: Kelvic Grey Wolf
Gender: Female
Age: 2, appears 28

Appearance: As a human, Quin is slightly above average for a woman and has a slim but athletic build at 123 pounds. She has large golden eyes, a trait carried over from her animal form, brown hair hanging down to her chest, and a very memorable face. Her facial structure is mostly heart-shaped but includes a very distinctive wide jawline and distinct (almost chiseled) lips. As a wolf, Quin’s coat is gray at the base and then black and reddish brown throughout the remainder of it, with golden eyes typical of all wolves.

Wolf Facts:

  • Live in packs of 5-20
  • Lifespan up to 13 years
  • 42 teeth
  • Sense of smell estimated to be up to 100 times stronger than humans and are reported to be able to smell prey from miles away
  • Nocturnal and territorial
  • Often reddish brown in color and around the size of a German Shepard
  • Social with other wolves but usually stay away from human settlements
  • Excellent runners, reaching up to 40 mph when sprinting but can run long distances around 5 mph to tire out prey
  • Communicate using vocalizations, body postures, scent, touch, and taste. Other vocalizations include growls, barks and whines
  • Aggressive or self-assertive wolves are characterized by their slow and deliberate movements, high body posture and raised hackles, while submissive ones carry their bodies low, flatten their fur, and lower their ears and tail
  • Leaps at its quarry and tears at it. Wolves may wound large prey and then lie around resting for hours before killing it when it is weaker due to blood loss, thereby lessening the risk of injury to themselves. With medium-sized prey, wolves kill by biting the throat, severing nerve tracks and the carotid artery. With small, mouselike prey, wolves leap in a high arc and immobilize it with their forepaws
  • Extremely strong and enduring animals, able to pursue their prey all day and night if needed

As a Kelvic, Quin is complex in her nature. Like all Kelvics, she has a deep-rooted need to belong, to serve, in any way that takes form. However, she is a Kelvic that has reached maturity without ever having been bonded and because of this, she has grown up enough to understand the weight behind it and she does not want to end up bonded to the wrong person. From what she has seen and survived, Quin is both fearful of ever bonding with someone, because it means getting close to them, yet at the same time, there’s a desperation deep in her core to do so. This war within her has further fueled her already reserved nature about who she gets close to, though she is not outwardly cold either. Now that she has matured, she is simply cautious with new people until she gets to know them better.

Outside of the never-ending war within, Quin keeps to herself and looks out for herself, but she tries to stay aware of those around her and her surroundings. Not doing so is a mistake in Sunberth. She yearns and strives for belonging and acceptance and cautiously seeks it out. She has no family left and she seeks to replace/rebuild that, and whether that’s done through a group, a real friend/lover (if she can let them get close enough), or both makes no difference to her. She is desperate for companionship of any kind at this point and would be relatively accepting of just about anyone to that end.

Character History

Quin was born in Sunberth to Kelvic parents, reclusive and distrustful as anyone else in Sunberth. They shifted as rarely as they could get away with, and almost always in the night and somewhere they felt was safer than amongst the prying eyes of the city. Aside from the possibility of being knabbed for slavery, her parents saw the benefit of keeping their animal forms secret from the general populace. If no one knew what they were, it could never be used against them or sought after. Kelvics weren’t unknown to the populace and the features from their animal forms that could be seen when they were human could not be hidden, but what their actual animal forms were remained unknown if they didn’t shift in front of people. It was hard to live that way, but if they did so, they could live their lives in blissful mediocrity.

From childhood until maturity, Quin did as her parents did and kept to herself and didn’t ask questions or get too close to anyone. Her golden eyes were a dead giveaway that she was Kelvic, but she followed in her parent’s footsteps and kept her form hidden. Her canine teeth were slightly more elongated than her peers too, but they were easier to conceal. She only had to be careful when she smiled and remember to not open her mouth too wide when she did, and her canines looked like anyone else’s. Overall, interaction with others was unavoidable, but at least if she didn’t shift around people and was careful about how she conducted herself, then her golden eyes were the only clue anyone had as to what she was and they could be left guessing, and no one would be bothered or concerned about what she was.

She continued life that way until the Winter of 519 AV. An out of towner was hanged for accusations of magic use, and Quin’s parents were found dead the day after. She has no idea what really happened or why they were killed. She likes to believe that they weren’t involved in anything untoward, more untoward than usual for a Sunberthian that is, and so she hopes that maybe they died defending the accused’s innocence. She hopes that even an outsider wouldn’t be foolish enough to practice magic inside Sunberth and that her parents only tried to right a wrong, a rare quality in Sunberth that Quin greatly admired.

The death of her parents coupled with the invasion and later culling of wolves throughout the city caused Quin to withdraw as much from society as she could manage with what little belongings she had left. It was more vital than ever that no one discover that her animal form was a wolf, or she would be hunted for it. With her parents gone, Quin left their home and in addition to taking and keeping a dagger belonging to her parents, acquired the necessary supplies for living on her own. With those supplies, she retreated to the back edge of the tent city. Being along the outer edge allowed her to place her tent so that she was mostly facing away from the others, and this allowed her to slip in and out as a wolf without being seen. However, she did this as little as she could get away with because of the hunting of wolves. Living there in the tent city, she was far enough removed from the main Sunberth society to feel like she obtained safety in her solitude, but close enough that she could venture into the city as a human for anything she needed, as well as often enough that she wouldn’t be thought dead or missing and so she wouldn’t be of thought to be searched for.

By the summer of 522 AV, with the hunting of the wolves was over and the hype around them calmed down, Quin began to loosely rejoin society and be a bit more social. Overcoming the death of her parents and the consequences of her chosen removal from society, Quin is still reserved, paranoid, and distrustful of others at first, but she now allows herself to get to know people before deciding to remain that way or ease up and let them see the more friendly and positive sides of herself.
