The Fountain of Before and After

Image

Resting atop a simple, wide, black pedestal no more than two feet high, is a small ovular base of the same shade. Atop the base is a large bowl filled with water, carved of the darkest of black stones. An obsidian it seems, which has faded over the years, from the light that shines upon it day after day, and the water that seeps into the impurities within the rock, once they have formed. The water seems to shimmer a warm orange shade, with the light of the sun, a milky white with the moon. From the center of the large bowl, sprouts a small fountain of clear water, which vaguely carries the scent of newly-fallen rain. The water which ripples across the surface of the container, spills out and over the bowl's rim, before cascading down towards a larger, circular pool of water. As though it were a waterfall. The water seems to sway lightly, rocking against its container as several drops of clear fluid continually fall into it, perpetuating the never-ending flow of the fountain.

At times, Black Rock's residents have been known to stand with their back facing the fountain, while holding a single coin in the palm of their hands. The resident will close their eyes, and make a wish, before raising the coin to their lips and kissing it gently, as though for luck. After which time, the resident will toss the coin over their shoulder, open their eyes, and watch the coin fall into the clear waters of the collection pool. The coin always produces a gentle plop, as it sends several droplets of water into the air, before everything sinks back below the surface. For if anyone does bother to look, a multitude of coins can be found nestled on the bottom of the collection pool. They give off a pale glow as the water ripples above them. Should anyone think to fish them out however, in the hopes of obtaining free money, they will find that it is impossible to pluck the coins back out of the water. Not only that, but it proves to be a surprisingly dangerous feat.
