A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

[Flash Back] The Differences Between Her and Me (Solo)

They didn’t need to hear her name to know the girl wasn’t like the rest of them. Bleached blond hair and blue eyes, no Symenestra had coloring like that. Her body was different too, thicker than the other girls her age, but balanced as if the extra bulk was suppose to be there. The children had watched her come in and claim an unoccupied pillow; the bright colors of her wide skirt spilling across the floor.

Who was she? They wondered. Where did she come from? Why wasn’t she wearing any black like the rest of them? The girl gave no answer to these silent questions but, let her eyes wander from one classroom object to another; trying to see everything and everyone while avoiding probing stares.

“Before we begin our lessons today,” The teacher clapped gathering attentions back onto herself. “Everyone please welcome Dra-Lyssna Akebia.”

Dra? Another wave of silent whispers permeated the class. As in a half breed? Adavi had heard of those; Symenestra women who mated with non-Symenestra men producing a mixed breed.

“Dra, stand up so everyone knows who you are.” The teacher continued, her voice teetering between its usual kindly note and a more spiteful pitch.

Adavi like the rest of his class was now openly staring at the girl as she stood. Her head slightly bowed with eyes locked on a spot somewhere down and to the teacher’s right. He watched curiously as Madame Solanum began her lesson leaving Lyssna to stand awkwardly before deciding it was probably alright for her to sit down now. He’d never seen Solanum treat any of her students with such off-handed indifference before. She was always so considerate and patience with the rest of them. Was it because Lyssna was a half-breed? She seemed ok to him. She wasn’t ugly or loud, or mean as far as he knew. And she smelled nice.

From where Adavi sat he had a good profile view of his new classmate and kept shooting her glances throughout the lesson. He wondered what she was like, where she was from, what race her father could be. Did she play the same games he did? Did she know some new games?

Lyssna didn’t say a single word during the five hours of class, though it wasn’t from lack of trying. In the beginning often did she raise her hand to answer questions, but each time Solanum overlooked her for someone else; often coxing the class until another grew brave enough to offer a hesitant guess. Adavi watched the girl’s hand fall for a fifth time to lie like a crumpled bird within her lap. He felt sorry for her, no more than that. He could feel her frustration spawned from the humiliation of a power figure she had no hope of combating; an angry sort of sadness which threatening to tremble unchecked from the corners of her large blue eyes. Adavi didn’t want her to cry. Watching people cry always made him cry too and he didn’t want that either.

When Solanum turned her back to elaborate on one of the diagrams Adavi slipped his hand into the tangled mass of Lyssna’s fingers. She looked up startled and unsure of the intent this foreign appendage touching her might have. The boy glanced up at her briefly before scooting his pillow closer to hers.

“I’m Adavi.” He whispered with a smile as if he was sharing a secret, before touching a spot on her dress. “Green’s my favorite color.” Lyssna stared at him for a moment unsure, but then smiled in return, using her free hand to wipe the dampness from her eyes.

“I like green too.” She whispered. “Like sea turtles.”

Adavi didn’t know what a sea turtle was, but he let Lyssna hold his hand even after Solanum turned back around. He liked the way she’d smiled at him, like he’d given her something precisions and valuable. The memory left a warm place in his heart.
We are all a part of the same string.
