[Li Muata] Death and Decadence.

Burning hot fires, smell of burning flesh, decaying bodies strewn about. Well, that sounds much less organized that it really is in Li Muata. Benoit was often seen shoveling the ashes of dead soldiers or citizens of Syliras out of the huge ovens where they were cremated, and Harper was awe-struck when she entered.

A dead corpse, all grinning and filthy, laid across a slab of stone, peaceful as a sleeping new-born. He reminded Harper of her father; he was a short man in stature, like her father was, with a thin beard and pale skin. Of course, the pale skin was from the lack of blood flow, due to being dead. His left cheek was starting to rot away, and it fascinated Harper. She peered in closely at the rotting, green fleshing and caught a whiff of it. It stabbed right through the smells of burning flesh and punched her in the nose. She could almost taste the decay.

She recoiled in disgust and coughed a bit. Finally, Benoit noticed her, and gave a grunt of a laugh. "Don't'cha worry, you'll get use' to tha' smell, I can promise ye' that." She gave him a weak smile. She found him to be an odd yet pleasurable man. His odd twang gave him a strange appeal. The fact that he was Nuit was interesting, also, and Harper wanted to ask him of his history but decided not to.

"Well, since yer' here, you can start workin'," Benoit said, walking over to Harper and dusting off his hands on his pants. "Tha' job is simple, really: get tha' designated bodies into tha' fires, an' put tha' ones that are needin' embalmin' of there," He said, pointing to a door made of a dark wood, which she was guessing led to a room just for embalming.

"Most a' tha' bodies'll be up fer burnin'; we don't do too much embalmin' 'round here, but I knows you is wantin' to learn, so I'll teach ya' when I can." And with no further instructions, Benoit motioned over to Harper. Caught off guard, she hastily walked over to where he was. He was standing in front of the body she had observed earlier. He stood above his head and had his hands under his shoulders. "You might wanna grab you some of them gloves there," He said as he pointed to a pair of thick, leather gloves laying on one of the many stone slabs. Harper grabbed them and slid them onto her small hands. They were much to big for her and had various stains. She found it difficult to move her fingers in them.

"Okay 'den, on my count, we're'a gonna lift tha' body and move it from here to that cart, there.". He motioned with his head to a large wooden cart about the size of a large, fully-grown man. "Grab his legs, now." After Harper awkwardly latched onto his bare legs, Benoit counted to three in his gruff voice and lifted.

Harper was shocked at the extreme weight of the man. She could barely lift him, she thought, and had trouble keeping him up. Luckily for her, the cart was only about a foot away so they were finished transporting him within seconds. Harper allowed the body to almost fall down, making a loud plopping noise against the cart. She let out a large breath, begging her lungs to take in more.

Benoit gave her an odd look. "Well, you're'a gonna need ta work on yer' strength." He then took the head of the cart into his hands and began to steer it over to one of the huge, burning ovens. Harper gulped nervously. She was about to see her first body burning.
"Rather die hard than die hallow."
