Considered one of the most mysterious cities in Mizahar, Alvadas is called The City of Illusions. It is the home of Ionu and the notorious Inverted. This city sits on one of the main crossroads through The Region of Kalea.

Ulric just gave a grunt, shoved past them to the heavy timbers of the door. “Wine is always better, you fools,” he grated, and promptly departed, leaving the rusty hinge to squeal in sulky cacophony. They didn’t use any grease, he frowned, wondering how much longer he’d he plagued by the wretched piece of iron. He kept it open, just in case they decided to stop warbling.

Heaving a sigh, he gazed over the winding lanes, the vapidly yawning chimeras of purple tongues of flames, flowers whose stems were vipers, and a clutch of spiny, mauve locusts whose unceasing chatter made his head hurt. He heard the rumble of a cart over uneven, dirty rocks, watched a harlot in tawdry garb scamper away from the ruddy gash of the dawn, back to her seedy tenement.

“Want some eggs?”

“What?” Lazily, he regarded the chubby boy, with his broad honest face, piggy cheeks, and insipid gray eyes, the lank mop of pale curls making him appear just as much an egg as those dredged from his wicker basket. Egg-boy wasn’t very perturbed, which was strange, considering the dangers of large, scruffy men bearing axes. Probably knows me, he frowned. They’re all the petching same, y’know.”

“Eggs, five coppers a basket.” Egg-boy held it out, trying to wrench his face into a mask that was presumably intended to evoke pity, but instead drew comparisons to a wizened graybeard trying to take a shyke.

Ulric gave a snort.

“Here,” he grumbled, distractedly fumbled in his purse and flung a few coppers at the boy, who caught them deftly. Except for the ones he missed, and was forced to scuttle after before they vanished in the narrow, reeking gutter. Egg-boy hefted the basket, jostling it at his legs, but Ulric just forced him away. “Keep them,” he grumbled, plucking out a large, magenta egg, tinged by jade. “That’s enough.”

Idly, he scratched at his beard, went back through the door. “Have an egg,” he grunted, handing it to the spider.

…search for treasure…

“You should’ve said that before,” he growled, laying the axe down so he could fasten the rest of his armor. “Yes, we’ll go.” He just ignored them, mostly. He enjoyed doing that.

Ravokians didn’t talk your ear off, they flung their chips down right away and kept their daggers near. Even if everything they spoke was just deceit in the end, sharply melding with betrayal.

Deftly, he flung on his jerkin and then the dense, musty cuirass of leather scales, not wanting to be overly burdened if they met with any water. “Y’know, my dear, sweet slut of a mother used to fry me eggs. And every so often, she’d give me a smear of honey. That was nice of her. The thing is, by now she’s probably got huge chests of silver, and hundreds of spears at her back, so it’s tricky trying to cut out her heart and burn the entire, shyking city in an inky, roaring inferno until it sinks with a myriad elegy of shrieks.”

Ulric jammed on his gauntlets, thrusting the hafts of his throwing axes through loops in his rig, and hefted his shield, firmly clashing the edge of his axe against the rim with a clang. “Were you saying something?”

A Dreamer's Scheme (Antar, Naama, and Ulric)

Cradling the egg in her palm, the spider inspected it for obvious tampering and murmured her thanks. Finding nothing unusual aside from the bizarre color, which in her mind could be attributed to the city’s eccentric nature, Shai extended her fangs and bit two holes into it. Spitting the shells into the fire place before slurping the shell’s remaining contents out. She tossed the empty husk into the fire before commenting offhandedly. “Cooking food always seemed a waste.”

Slinking from the space she had managed to occupy nearly this entire time to the fire the spider began to warm her hands. Tasking her mind to the immediate future, which given the man’s current activities would be directly into the caverns, Shai went through the supplies they would need. As a spider a cavern would be familiar terrain but for the others there may be passes nearly impregnable to their kind. “You three will need rope if the name ‘caverns’ suggests anything.” Of one thing she was sure, regardless of the name there would be no stretch more segregating than what Kalinor had to offer, so these humans would make it just fine. “He asked your name.” She reminded him. “It is not inappropriate to have a moniker in these situations. I am Shai.”

“You will want to take a torch I assume?” An annoyance for her eyes, she would need to keep her gaze from it directly or ruin her vision temporarily while it adjusted. Unless… turning towards the Chaktawe, “Do those eyes have function beyond a normal human’s? Or are they for show?”

The swords, the axes, the daggers. The other three would be what kept them safe. If the cavern held anything like the gorge beneath Kalinor her skills would not have a place in combat. The spider could make up for her failing though, a warning could make all the difference between death and victory. They will need to learn the signals. Pulling out the tightly clasped indigo fan from her cloak pockets, she tapped her nails against the cold iron. While the others prepared she would think of new signals, strangers could not be trusted with the usual understandings. Today they would be allies but the future was always a mystery. It’s going to be a long day.

A Dreamer's Scheme (Antar, Naama, and Ulric)

"Oh no , did I say something? Most especially not... " Antar mused with evident mirth as he turned his head to the side to mutter, "Though to be fair I'm sure it's so tricky trying to cut out your mothers heart. I wouldn't mind anyone who'd want to start burning the entire shyking city though; Hell I'd join 'em. Bad memories of the puss buckets there and their evident disregard for anything that won't chain you to Rhysol's teat. But I guess if your mother's got spears at her back and a chest of gold she might be licking his-" Antar stopped a moment as he realized he was still in this situation with Shai. He personally wouldn't have minded a brief tangle with the man who thought himself a god's shell.

If this was the same bastard from that dream...

Did this jackdaw have a twin somewhere ?

No matter, Antar would turn towards Ulric, sighing loudly, before grunting a bit of his frustration. "You're not real good at keeping things under wraps even if some bloody god would kill you for your intentions to go slip a dagger between your mother's breasts? If you can't hide your intentions how ever did you survive Ravok anyway? Everyone there has to lie twice out their arse and piss out their breath anyways. So let me ask you a question: Are you the one that showed me in a dream what xhyvas' realm once was? If so... I'll tell you why I really want to go down to the cavern's with you."
"I am the Shadow and the smoke in your eyes, I am the ghost that hides in the night."

Ulric gave a snort. There was a groaning scrape of vertebrae, a scapula lifting from the tundra of his back. The brutal slant of steel sliced by skeins of shadow, slid into an empty recess of leather. Those eyes, starkly leonine in their implacable disregard, furled trenchant over the spider. They were devoid of fury, just glazed by the lazy cinders. “Seems like he could’ve tickled it out with that tarnish of tongue,” he grunted, “But if you must know, it’s Ulric.”

Delving over her tawdry insinuations, he jostled a bundle of torches, their bindings of soaked pitch. There were also heavy, tarry cables procured from the bazaar. They’d be well served in the catacomb, if they got that far.

Already, his nerves were limned by impatience. The man’s unending queries, like the vapidity of a bullock’s engorged zeal to lock horns, transposed in his way. There was a mug on the shelf, and he brought it to the cask. The ridges of his body, covered by that cruel, yet graceful weft of steel, jounced with a mulish patina. This was, beyond the vagaries of doubt, the most violent of men. “There was a time,” he rasped, taking a gulp of thick, dark beer, “That I found refuge, bent by the throes of my guilt, under that cowl of deceit. There’s no denying the prudence in subterfuge, but if you’ve got to bide there forever, you become less than a man. That’s why the crows found me, y’see. They’ve a desire to share their veracity. The glisten of bare, splayed cages of ribs, flecked by shreds of putrefying flesh. That’s their augury. That’s where we’re all going, back to the muck. The dredging of that mire isn’t my calling,” he grunted, his jaw giving a dour jerk.

“There’s only defiance. These scrapings of bitter rock, the breakers beating over the coast, even the trundling of a sordid cart of chained souls doesn’t mean anything to me. There are no men like me.” Then, the strains of a chuckle turgidly erupting from the depths of his chest, he gave the other man a hearty cuff on the shoulder. There was a rattle of metal. The scar of a grin.

“Rhysol can have my head if he desires it, but to get it, he’ll have to kill me himself. If he can.”

They’d tremble, or he’d perish. There wasn’t a great disparity.

"Why yes, in fact my eyes are special. I can see straight through armor. Quite handy for when I want to feel good about myself, I suppose." She eyed the spider girl, crinkling her nose distastefully, Yet another person who thinks herself an exemplary predator.

"You talk a lot," Squirt piped in, poking the human stranger precariously with a dirty finger. "Almost as much as Ulric, but he doesn't make any sense half the time."

Naama rolled her eyes, "Quiet, no one wants to listen to your jabbering, Squirt." She pushed herself off the wall, securing her weapons on her back. "It's far too cramped in here and I've an urge to smash someone's head in. Let's move before the day is wasted."
