Aeryna retreated when he abruptly pushed off the wall, a small, prancing step back as she watched him warily, but all he did was brush past her, crooking a finger to signal her to follow as he began to walk. She didn't hesitate to follow him, catching up and walking beside him, her stride a smooth lope.
He laughed at her words as they walked, glancing at her, and spoke casually, though his words put a scowl on her face. She may have been younger than some, but it irritated her that he called her 'girl', and his jab at the Svefra hardly improved the mood he was beginning to put her in.
She opened her mouth for a sharp retort, but he surprised her by turning and ducking into an alley, so she followed, wondering where in the seven Hells they were going, and what she was getting herself into by following him.
When he stopped, she nearly bumped into him. Watching him carefully, her hand flew to the hilt of her cutlass when he drew his sword, but he didn't point it at her, simply tapped it against the sheath almost absently.
His words piqued her curiosity, and she watched as he leaned back against the wall and slid to the ground, resting his sword precariously on one of his knees. Interested, she sat beside him, crossing her legs and turning to look at him.
"You're involved with the Crimson Edge?" She asked, thoughtfully. She'd heard of them quite a bit, in all honesty, and though she'd considered checking them out more in depth, she'd decided against it in the end. She didn't want such a responsibility. She was happy on her own, for the moment.
She was quiet for a moment as she thought over Wrenmae's words. Looking at him, she could easily see the truth in what he'd said. He didn't seem like someone who could get by without a set goal or purpose in mind. Completely the opposite of her, really. She had no goals, not yet, in any case.
At his question, she gave a small shake of her head to return to the present moment, and chuckled softly. "Neither," She told him, settling herself more comfortably against the wall. "I just...I dunno. I mean, we travel a lot, but only on the ocean. The only time we really stop at cities is for trading and stuff."
She ran her fingers through her hair, glancing at him. "I wanna see more than that. I mean, there's so much more out there," She gestured with a slender hand vaguely.
She sighed, "Don't get me wrong, I love the sea. But I've always been curious about the cities and the land." She fell quiet, slightly surprised at how much she'd spoken, and looked away, her eyes wandering absently.
Suddenly, she recalled something he'd just said, and felt foolish that she hadn't caught it right away. "Hang on," She frowned, a quizzical look in her eyes. "Did you say 'my pod?'" Her eyes cast up and down him. If he was a Svefra, she would have realized, wouldn't have she? |
