The massive stretch of desert that overwhelms Eyktol. Here, a man's water is worth more than his life, and the burying sands are the unfortunate's mute undertaker.

22nd of Spring in the Year 502 AV

Rocking...the sands were rocking. An earthquake! As she thought the words, a void opened up before her, streams of sand pouring over it's rim as the crevice inched closer...Ishara's eyes snapped open, registering dimly that she was not tucked into her bedroll by the hearth at home. No, she was far from the familiarity of home, tucked against the chest of her eldest brother, who's arms supported her on either side as he commanded the reins of his horse. Sitting up a bit straighter, Ishara rubbed the sleep from bleary eyes, a deep yawn announcing that she was awake at last. A soft chuckle was issued right next to her ear, and Kedron spoke softly..

"Awake, little dove? You're missing the dawn."

"Hmm?" Her eyes crept up, and true to his words the sky was...spectacular. Resplendant in shades of soft lilac and pink, with rays of gold just peeking over the horizon. There were not many flowers in the desert. However, the vast stretch of endless sand, dunes, and rock could mix up some of the most colorful starts to the day. The closings were not half bad, either...Ishara felt that the colorful show was the desert's way of making up for the lack of flowers year-round.

"How much further?" she asked, sitting up and twisting about in her seat to cast a glance over Kedron's shoulder. Her other brothers fell in line...Hadre, Renej, Fen, and the twins, Rojin and Rakim. Fen, the youngest brother and still older than her by two years, caught her eye and nodded, his dark hair falling unbound over his shoulders and teased by the light wind unfolding across the desert. Ishara cracked a smile and looked ahead once more.

"Not far, now."

So typical of him, Ishara thought impatiently, sitting back and losing herself to the steady rhythm of the horse's gait as they stepped lightly across the sands. She was impatient to see the grasslands...

Once a year her brothers journeyed through a handful of small settlements that brought them close to the Sea of Grass. Caravans traveled this way frequently, and it was one of the only opportunities the family might have to sell some of their goats, trade for fresh breeding stock, or perhaps sell off one of the desert-bred horses her brothers broke and trained out of their small herd.

This year they'd taken Ishara with them, and she'd extracted a promise from them that they would take her to see the grasslands while they were near.

After all, it was not every day a girl of thirteen could boast of seeing the Sea of Grass!

The'd ventured out well before the rising sun so that they could get the day's journey underway when the weather was still tolerable. Ishara had merely been plucked from her sleeping roll and hefted into the saddle, where exhaustion sucked her back down into dreams once again. They'd set a steady pace, their desert horses gliding across the sands. As the sun finally breached the horizon, Kedron judged them to be within a few miles, going by the landmarks.

((TBC...))
"What creature is this which dances beneath my eye?
A desert-bred mortal who's beastial sinew and heart
Lay forged in the firey breath of Yahal's sigh!
Watch, as the soul surfs upon the wind and slowly breaks apart..."
