Adrian

Name: Adrian
Race: Human
Birthday & Age: 490, 4th of Spring, AV (23 Years Old)
Gender: Male
Height: 5'11
Weight: 180 lbs

Physical Appearance:

It isn’t hard to imagine Adrian as the son of a blacksmith with his broad shoulders, and solid frame, hands rough from working the forge. His skin is dark, and rough though from years of aiding his father in forging within the grand halls of Syliras . Always he is seen with an ornamented collar around his neck, ever a sign of who he had become in this place. On his hip, hidden from the causal glance by his clothing, is a Ranuri mark, its stained chains draping across his dark skin.

Character Concept:

Character Type: Wanderer

Freshly deprived of freedom, Adrian has been finding adjusting to the life of a slave rather hard going, his only saving grace is in having been marked with Ranuri. It has made it quite easier to bear servitude, and brought him to accept his situation as a reality of life that cannot be denied. Still though, he finds himself so lost in this new place, so unlike what he's used to, and so he is reluctant to trust anyone in the city. Friendless in this new life, he uses blacksmithing as an outlet from the loneliness and frustration that threatens to overwhelm him.

History:

Born the son of a blacksmith in Syliras, Adrian naturally took up the trade as soon as he was of age, for in Syliras everyone worked, or else they didn't eat. This suited him fine, for he'd had known no other life save for one hard at work in the forge, yet that soon changed however when a friend of his father's arrived from a distant city, and the man pressed his old friend to come back to Zeltiva to see to important business there. Adrian's father would have nothing to do with it, preferring to stay in Zeltiva with his wife, yet Adrian was curious and in private pressed his father's friend into taking him along. After much insisting, the man finally consented and Adrian was to be bound for Zeltiva.

However this was not to be as intended , for Wildlands are harsh, and after surviving numerous dangers, the caravan finally succumbed to bandits that laid siege on the desperate travelers, taking Adrian and a handful of others as slaves. As despair sank in, and fear began to rise, their treatment grew worse and worse until one night he had a strange visitor in the night, from a goddess beyond his knowledge until the moment she marked him leaving him with the words, “Fate may yet have more planned for you Adrian” she spoke before disappearing into the elements, forever changing his life as he knew it, and likely saving him as well.

As luck would have it, as they closed in on their destination a coop within the slaver band coincided with an attack from a small group of individuals, whom managed to just get him free, and a few others before retreating back to where they came. For the first time in a while, he felt free and he breathed easy, soon making his way back south with a small group of companions. This peace was not to last however as the very same slavers they had been liberated from, found them once more, and beaten with hope extinguished he found himself dragged back towards Ravok in chains.

Gnosis Story

The darkness of the night encroached upon him, that one night among many spent in shackles that chaffed at his wrists and ankles, rubbing the flesh raw underneath. The sapped at his notions of freedom just like the cold night air was draining the warmth from his flesh, making it pallid and cold. The darkness made it worse, seeming to bite at him with the cold, his chattering teeth its disheartening voice.

It pressed to hard truth of the situation into the hearts of everyone of those companions of iron, leaving little room for hope or its companions. A few even in the group, he noticed, seemed to have lost sight of it all, their eyes blank, and their expressions where listless. He shuddered to comprehend to be broken in such a way, and feared when their time would be to be subject to reconditioning as these men and women where slaves long before he came to wear the same iron and he had heard the stories whispered by cruel mouths in the middle of the night. It was to get much more unpleasant before they reached their destination, of that he was sure.

Let them try to break him he bravely offered to counter the disparaging thought but, he could hardly believe it by all the vacant stares that surrounded him, swallowing him up in their impotency. He would resist, but he hardly knew if that would be enough. These men could be creative he had heard in tales meant to keep children true and honest.

[Sylir preserve me]

He prayed, yet still couldn't manage to dissuade the pervading sense of loneliness that clutched at his being, and with exhaustion from the day encroaching into every fiber he relinquished his mind to sleep.

*****

[Many days later]

He'd lost track of how much time they had spent out in these unfamiliar lands, and still they pressed on, with plenty of hard work around for him and his chained companions to sort out for their self imposed masters. The lash was spared out during the day, only to be allowed freedom at night, punishing any slave that was not immediately responsive to a request. These men repulsed him, and every part of him seethed with hate, though kept it in check, doing what they asked when they asked and minding the whip as much as he could pretend not to, which was not hardly any resistance what so ever. The whips punishment always proved twofold after all in the morning when he was made to haul lumber about the camp and into the appropriate carts, reopening the scars that crisscrossed the flesh of his back and shoulders, and in the night they where opened again by the whip, perpetuating the victimizing cycle, until all anger was nearly beaten out of him, and certainly all hope had fled him.

That night found him laying on the ground, flat on his stomach as he tried to ignore the pain hotly arching across his back in order that he might get some rest before the morning. His stomachs grumbling hardly helped with the fact, the crust of bread and mouthful of water he had received in the morning long having outlasted itself. Another thing prevented his sleep, yet he hardly recognized it at first so weak and weary was he.

A soft hand plied at the flesh of his arm, moving him weakly at first but then growing in strength and firmness. The change drew his attention well enough, and looking up from his unceremonious position, he blinked away the dust in his eyes before they settled upon the lithe form of a woman not far from him. Noticing her lack of chains and clothing startled him the rest of the way from his pain driven stupor and sitting upright he acknowledge the lady with an awkward cough.

"Be still Adrian, there is no cause for alarm The goddess spoke, her voice soft and tender.

Not meaning to, he relaxed at her words, knowing he could trust her though he couldn't quite place for what reason he knew this. He realized her knowing of his name was just as well odd, but in the desperate state he found himself in, such notions did not immediately make themselves apparent to him. Instead he pursued a more direct line of questioning.

"Who are you?"

"I am Nikali, goddess of servants and slavery. I have come to relieve you" She responded again with that soft voice of hers, yet unmistakable in it's power.

Before he even had to ask, the woman was gone, and suddenly behind him, her warm breath just barely tickling the back of his neck and her fingers answered him as the brush against his left him, bring a surge of power and knowledge through him all at once so that in a heartbeat he impossibly understood just what he had been gifted with at that moment. As thoughts caught up to moment several heartbeats after the realization he soon realized he was alone once more, but to his fortune he had been left better off then before because he had been endowed with the gnosis Ranuri, and while he didn't immedeatly understand its value to all those who would intend to exploit those so 'blessed' with the gnosis, he understood the gift he had received from the goddess and appreciated it well for now hope grew anew in his heart, and the darkness seemed to grow lighter. Perhaps the pain could become easier to bear, for the right cause of course. Could it be that it wasn't so dismal a prospective as he had suspected? Only time would tell, but he had a notion that this new gnosis he found on his skin would play no small role in this destiny of his.

The End
