24th Day of Autumn, 508 AV - Somewhere in the center of Sunberth
The gentle rhythm of the light shower was all that broke the silence of the night as the slight light from the moon illuminated the rooftops over Sunberth. It was an unusual night for not often was it possible to lie in silent wait and listen to the gentle breeze as it flowed over the city, this settlement was more accustom to the sounds of conflict and larceny than of peace and tranquility but it was a night that young James would remember for quite some time. He gave the rain little notice as he sat back against the chimney of a small two story building in the center of Sunberth, it was not often he had the time to reflect on the goings on in the city and on nights like this he liked to spirit himself away to be alone with his thoughts, however tonight he had other business.
Before him a three story building stood across the narrow road, it was the establishment of a middle aged jewelry trader whom Jimmy had decided had been left alone for far too long. He had been sat studying the building for an hour now simply watching for movement inside, for any indication that his target was still awake and aware, he had seen nothing for a good half and hour and judged it safe enough. His eyes then skipped up to the foot of the building, he had previously scouted a small gate which led to a backyard where he thought it the easiest to break in, he wasn’t that proficient at climbing up the sheer surface of the wall so a back door would have to do.
As the minutes passed he slowly began to stir as he crouched low and began to move himself slowly out from the gloom. His bare feet left little sign of his passing and made no sound for any would be assailants to detect, he had learnt quickly that to make a sound and leave trace was to invite a slit throat from whom ever fancied to vulture his fare once he had done the dirty work. All too many people he knew had ended up at the bottom of a pit and buried outside the city boundaries for him to ignore the few simple rules he had forced himself to abide.
A few more moments passed as he scanned his surroundings, for a young boy of fourteen he was alert and he took in every sound around him, though it was difficult due to the rain. After a few minutes he judged it safe and swiftly but silently he moved to the edge of the building and lowered himself down to ground level. A quick look either way down the street was all he could spare as he quickly crossed the street and clambered over the locked gate into the realm of his prey…
