Physical Description

Under the forgiving golden gaze of Syna, the celestial origins of Alses are wondrously apparent – her flawless, iridescent skin shimmers like richly gilded mother-of-pearl and her eyes seem to flicker and dance with golden light, the broad irises a shimmering melange of copper and gold flecks and the pupil's darkness almost lost amid the vibrant complexity. Whilst built to the voluptuous pre-Valterrian ideal, like all Ethaefal, she is relatively short for her race whilst glorying in her celestial body, standing at a mere five foot six, but this takes nothing from her beauty, and indeed can often enhance it; she walks among the other races rather than towering, unattainably, above them. She weighs very little, too, a mere 115 pounds, adding to the impression of ethereality and grace common to all of her race.

Her face is heart-shaped, defined by spectacular cheekbones and a rich and full Cupid's bow mouth of a red so dark as to be almost black, and her hair, although usually intricately bound-up in braids that keep it close to her head and easily-manageable for a traveller, reaches to mid-back when she lets it flow out behind her. Her hair and her horns, delicate constructions that curl back over her head in a gentle clasp, forming an intricate and beautiful crown, are the most changeable parts of her, shifting in primal response to the seasons and the waxing and waning of Syna's power over the mortal realm. In summertime, when Syna's power surges at full spate through the world, Alses' hair seems to be a wondrous golden filigree, blazing like a miniature sun in even the weakest of lights, whilst her horns blush peach at their bases, fading gently to pure white at the very tips. In the autumn, her hair takes fire into itself, a rich crimson colour mirroring the most vibrant shades of the autumnal palette, and her horns flush spectacular gold in contrast, whilst in winter, when her patron deity's fire is at its weakest, her hair fades to dull, near-lifeless brown, the colour of dead mast on the floor of a forest and the bare branches of trees in slumber, with only the fresh and youthful springtime green of her horns suggesting the life, only dormant, not dead, waiting to burst forth. Springtime celebrates the first flush of life after the harsh winter, purging the dull brown with vibrant blonde and her horns blossom at the tips with lilac shades, signalling the growth and flowering of life in many of its forms during this season.

When the pale and limpid orb of Leth gains the ascendancy and the final ray of Syna's light vanishes from the landscape, Alses loses her grasp of the divine and is bound in her mortal seeming until the sun once again bathes Mizahar. If anything, her mortal form appears even more delicate and fragile than her celestial one, giving her the appearance of a young girl, perhaps only fifteen or sixteen years of age. She stands at just over five feet – 5 foot 1 and a half inches, to be precise – and weighs in at around 92 pounds, decidedly unmuscular and untoughened by the rigours of travel and adventuring. In contrast to the vibrancy and life that characterises her full Ethaefal form, her seeming appears to have had most of the colour leached out; her hair is the palest of platinum blondes, so much so as to appear white under all but the most golden of lights and her skin has the hue of finest porcelain – even her lips appear bloodless, matching the pale, pearlescent scales that twine amorously up her legs, wrap across her hands and curl into a sort of natural circlet about her forehead. Her eyes are the only real spot of colour on her flawless and rather distant face, a brilliant emerald colour that stands out all the more for the paleness of the rest of her. In this form, her hair is shorter, too, usually cut in a traveller's style that sees it barely brush her shoulders and tied – rather inexpertly – up with a length of silvery cord, exposing the twin lines of gills that flutter gently down her neck. Both her ears are pierced, and one of the few things she remembers well from her life as a Konti are two heavy sapphire and gold drop earrings that she seems to have prized greatly, although why, exactly, she cannot recall.


Character Concept

Alses is naturally possessed of a curious and penetrating intellect, an insatiable desire to understand the new and strange world that she has found herself in, with its alien currents and storms of djed, strange customs and languages, so different from her past life and from the serenity of the divine realm that she remembers. Under the forgiving sun, she is a brilliant jewel – although introspection and regret can sometimes strike and leave her staring longingly upwards, mind filled with vague, half-formed concepts and images of the divine – this can on occasion lead her to come off as 'half-there' or just simply rude to others. She harbours faith and hope in her soul that this is just the latest in a series of trials and tests set before the faithful, and that, when she has fulfilled her obscured purpose in the fullness of time, she will rejoin Syna in the heavens.

Unsurprisingly, the night brings lassitude, but also some measure of organization, if not raw power and energy, to whatever project, be it personal or professional, that she is working on. She tries to keep herself busy – reading tomes and grimoires, writing her own, planning rituals and so forth until she falls asleep, for the night is the low ebb of her bright soul, and regretful introspection can leave her melancholic and unresponsive for much of the following day, especially in winter when the warmth of the sun is at its thinnest and she cannot feel Syna's power so clearly. She is more aware than most of past lives, although she retains no more than the standard scattershot recollection of all Ethaefal, and this results in a slight detachment from the usual grounding in the personal pronoun; sometimes, Alses will use 'we' or 'us' instead of 'me' or 'I'.


Character History

Fire and fear, is all I really remember from before. I recall a city, although more the idea of a city than anything to do with its architecture or people, and the fury of some potentate there. People have told me I am Konti, in my mortal seeming, so perhaps I gave some bad advice, or spoke some unwelcome truth that so set that nameless lord against me. Perhaps not; I have no way of knowing. I do remember I was far from water when I died, surrounded by fire and wicked blades, but nothing else of the circumstance. My next mortal memory is of the desolate foaming sea, and rocks, and sand.



I fell from grace, to be melodramatic, on the 12th of Summer in the year 506 AV, by mortal reckoning, at high noon, they tell me. The cold shock of seawater, the sting of salt in our mouth, the kaleidoscope of bubbles rising past our burning eyes – all this woke me from the divine dreamtime. I am fortunate, I suppose – instinct from the past took over and I struck out for the surface, for the bright blaze of the sun that guided me, infallible, surrounded by an explosion of bubbles, only the vaguest of brighter lights showing me the way back to Syna.

I burst to the surface, thankful to be bathed in light, bewildered by everything, thrown from complete serenity and perfection, the gloried hosannas of the heavenly choir, to the insult of the mortal world, the excoriation of saltwater on light-bathed skin, the rough dig of rocks into my feet in the first moments of our fall, all of it sharp and immediate, alien.

I do not know how long I floated there, stunned by shock, buoyed by seawater and actions that came from below my conscious mind. I know now that I am an excellent swimmer; I must bless my last incarnation – or at least, my last female guise – for her Konti-gifted skill there, else I would surely have drowned in the first few minutes of my emergence into Mizahar. As it was, I was spotted, by a fisherman's boat, thankfully, braving the risk of storms far out from a city called Zeltiva – although, at the time, to me that name was nothing more than meaningless grunts and whistles – rather than by an opportunistic pirate ship, to be sold into slavery.

At first, I feared them – and why would I not? They flung ropes, at first – which I ducked and swam away from, thinking them weapons rather than means of rescue – but I was weak and confused, dazed by my unceremonious entry into the world, and could not go far. Nets came next, and despite my struggles, the ropy strands caught around my hands and my body, entrapping me even as I fought, hauling me back and up from the salty embrace of the water, to deposit me, shaking and shivering, afraid and as weak as a newborn babe, onto the sturdy wooden deck of their little fishing boat.

There was mercy, which surprised me, as I had been expecting knives or fire, my head filled with a confusing mishmash of events, with no thread of experience or revelation to link them together. They carefully freed me from the nets, leaving me open and exposed on their deck, shivering at the unaccustomed touch of biting sea-breezes whilst incomprehensible noises filled my ears – the creak of the ship's timbers and ropes, the slap of wave against wood, the talking of the fishermen, both between themselves and directed at me – although I had no way of replying to them. The celestial tongue sang in the vaults of my mind, the music of the divine, and my name burned brightly, but my mortal tongue was heavy and dull, awkward and fumbling, and the words of air and light and beauty and grace turned to ash even as I tried to voice them.

I learned – later, when I mastered the Common language – that they found me beautiful, but not in the conventional sense, as such. More as an icon to be revered, or a statue appreciated for its fine craftsmanship and skill. In the event, they knew me to be more than mortal, and perhaps of interest, therefore, to their somewhat-local wizard, to whom I was brought, roughly clothed in a fisherman's spares, when they made port in Zentiva.

He recognized me for what I was – perhaps aided by the first transformation, as the last ray of the sun vanished from the face of the world – and took me in, gave me a roof over my head and food to fill my belly. Progress – of any sort – was slow, at first; the world was confusing to me, and we had little in the way of communication beyond gesture and perhaps one or two often-repeated words. Once the weakness of my neogenesis faded and my mind settled to a more stable state, I began to learn. First, and foremost, the tongue known as Common, the building block for everything else, and with it, the transformation of our relationship from owner and pet, if you will, to master and student.

It could hardly be otherwise, for the wizard was a mage of the practicing variety, dabbling in many and varied fields of magic, and as I trailed him about his abode and laboratories, it was impossible for me not to pick up snippets and fragments of magical lore and technique – even had I not the inclination and aptitude for the arcane arts. At first, my efforts in the fields of Magecrafting, Auristics and Glyphing – an art I learned alongside more common script; the two are intertwined in my mind – were erratic and stumbling, and indeed I am still largely unpracticed in the latter two – prone to failure and disjunct, the knowledge and skill frustratingly just outside my grasp, as though once learned and now forgotten. However, over time and with patient tutelage, both private and at the local University for the more mundane aspects, my skills improved, enough that I ceased to be – in the main – a drain and became an asset.

I suspect I should still be there, in that keep near Zeltiva, but for one thing – the demise of my kindly wizard, at the hands of some Voiding ritual gone horribly wrong. The specifics were – and are – unknown to me, it being a field of which I had no interest in or aptitude for, but his death was real and final enough, and with it went any reason for me to stay. I had heard rumours, over the years, of other cities, in particular Lhavit, with its skyglass buildings bathed in the light of Syna, of other beings like myself – loyalty had kept me close to Zeltiva, but with the focus of that loyalty gone...I wished to travel, to see the world, to deepen my skills, and above all, to avoid the lascivious gaze of a certain senior apprentice.

I left without fanfare, taking what was owed to me from my erstwhile mentor's possessions, and travelled – slowly, at first, as I had no real, firsthand knowledge of the world outside, and books can only go so far – and then faster as I learned the value of my skills and the best routes of travel, either with armed caravan parties or as a passenger on a coastal ship, gradually making my way across the face of the continent to the city of Lhavit, accumulating information on it as I went, so as to be prepared for what I might find.

I am not ashamed to admit to love at first sight, on catching my first glimpse of the skyglass towers of the city perched on its five peaks. There was an echo of the divine in the graceful arcs of the bridges, the culture of the place, in the very thrum of life itself. Different, yes, but still somehow comforting, a place where perhaps I could make a more permanent home, one that was mine rather than dependent on another.
