So this is it eh? This is the lawless city of Sunberth Kel thought to himself as he wandered the city. Kel had arrived in the morning after a long journey from Zeltiva. It felt good to arrive at civilization again, assuming you could call it that. The city was a complete change from what Kel was used to back in Zeltiva, the shining port city of the region. Zeltiva was orderly and scholarly, but this, this was a town of brawlers, gamblers, and rogues. Kel doubted that one could find may scholars wandering the streets of Sunberth. Then there was Kel. If someone from Zeltiva and someone from Sunberth had a child, it would be Kel. He was both knowledgeable and adventurous, and hopefully Sunberth would make a decent starting point for his pursuits.

Kel took a sheet of paper from his pack, as well as a vial of ink and a quill. Kel had decided that it may be a decent idea to make a crude map of the city for his own personal benefit. He decided he would first start with just a basic outline of the cities boundaries and then add the innards of the city as he continued his walk through Sunberth. He pressed the paper up against a wall and dipped his quill in the ink began drawing. First he drew a large circle which took up a majority of the page, indicating city boundaries. Normally he would have indicated where the city gate was, but Sunberth was different in that it had no main entrance. People could simply enter from wherever they wanted. He indicated this on the map instead. Once that was complete he mapped the road he was on and any businesses he had passed a long the way. Hopefully he would be able to find an tavern before dusk...he needed a drink.

Getting the Lay of the Land

Kel rounded several corners and changed several streets over the course of his adventure through Sunberth, recording buildings of interest upon his map. Without a compass or a sextant, making an accurate map was impossible, and unfortunately for him, these tools were damn expensive. Instead, to get a rough idea of the directions, he used the sun's position in the sky, to indicate north, south, east, and west. He pressed onward as he occasionally glanced upwards toward the sky. He drew a small cross on his map once he was sure of the sun's position, which would be rough estimate, and placed the directions at the appropriate spots on the cross. In hindsight, maybe I should have bought a map of the city rather than make this damn thing... he thought to himself.

While he was adding a shop he had passed to the map, a rather large brute like man had bumped into his shoulder, causing Kel to shift with the force. Before Kel could even speak the man had turned to Kel and yelled "If you petching bump me again I'll slit your throat ear to ear!" Kel was dumbfounded. "What? What the petch!?" Kel muttered to himself before continuing his tour. What in the void was that guys problem... Kel thought to himself. Kel glanced at the people of Sunberth and took note of a couple of observations. Number one, they were all extremely rugged looking. It seemed that there was no noble class to be seen anywhere around. And number two, a large number of the citizens had some sort of weaponry, and those that didn't probably knew something using their fists. Kel didn't have a weapon or know a damn thing about fighting...he was a scholar in a brawler's city.

Next Kel turned off of the large path he was traveling on an found himself on a narrower street. On both sides of Kel were back alleys that probably hid some of the shadier citizens of the city in their shadows. There were far less people wandering the streets in this area, but it wasn't completely empty. Kel spotted a beggar sitting against a wall with his hands out, looking for any spare mizas that someone may have. The man was scrawny, as if he had not eaten in days, and his clothes were ripped and tattered. The man had a patchy and unkempt beard that probably needed a good shaving. Kel walked past him, ignoring him and pretending to be concerned with his map. He doubted a beggar could last long in a place like Sunberth, where the people would most likely not give a damn about the beggar.

On the other side of the street, Kel spotted a group of women, standing around in some revealing clothing. At first glance they were most likely your common street whores, but Kel noticed the building they were next to. A line of men waited to get inside, each with an eager look on his face. The sign read Braga's House of Happy Endings. Happy Endings...? Oh wait...it's a whorehouse Kel thought to himself and let out a slight chuckle as he added the location to the map. Now he certainly knew where he would go if he needed any...companionship.

Kel walked onward, and occasionally glanced down alleyways, noting the things he had seen in his head. At one point he could of sworn he saw a mugging happening, but there were just shadows and slight grunt sounds coming from the alley. In another there was just a man on the ground, laying there motionless. Kel hoped that he was just asleep. Another thing Kel noted was that there was scraps of food, paper, and just trash in general everywhere in this area. Kel quickened his pace, in an attempt to find a route back to the main road. The less time he could spend in this area, the better. Damn he could use a drink.

Evening quickly swept in, leaving a dark blue tint in the sky, and an orange glow on the western horizon resulting from the setting sun. Kel hadn't managed to explore the entire city, but night was quickly falling, and being on the streets at night would most likely be dangerous for a new comer like Kel. Kel moved forward with the crowd in the darkening city. The crowd moved forcefully, and Kel once again found himself being shoved from all sides. Yep, this is Sunberth alright.

Finally, the building Kel had been searching for was in his sight, at least he assumed it was as a good amount of people were heading there. As he drew closer to the building, he managed to catch the sign outside the building hanging next to a street light. The Pig's Foot Tavern eh? Sounds like a silly name to me, but if they have alcohol, who cares? Kel laughed to himself.

Kel stepped inside the doors, after managing to squeeze past a large man who Kel swore was doing his damn best to hold up the crowd. The hearth warmed the room, and the air was filled with the smoke and smell of tobacco. Kel smirked and found himself a seat. A barmaid soon passed by and Kel grabbed her attention. He ordered a cold glass of ale, which was brought to him probably 20 chimes later. Well, I guess service isn't one of Sunberth's strong points Kel thought. He looked at his ale and smirked, maybe Sunberth wouldn't be too bad?
