It was his scent, Ignotus decided. Perhaps the smell of rot frightened her, perhaps she could tell his intention somehow, and was rightly afraid, he didn't know, and he no longer cared that much. He would have to accept that he would always disturb her... And he liked that. The old corpse chuckled quietly and slowly lowered himself onto the ground. Frightening the slave was amusing. Frightening the armed man he was going to be traveling with, not so much. He was already beginning to regret alienating Levi now, even if it was fun. He had approached the slaver precisely so he wouldn't have to take these sorts of risks. At any rate, he seemed to have calmed down slightly... Hopefully. Ignotus tried to make himself look as harmless and human as he possibly could as he crossed his legs and rested his hands on his knees before answering. "A just question..." He said, nodding appreciatively. "One rarely finds a volunteer willing to put in the legwork simply for the fun of it, after all..." His eyes twinkled softly now, and looking directly at them bred an indistinct sense of rapport. "You interest me, because you represent one of the very, very few of your kind, and indeed any race that has a head that isn't full of hot air." He tapped his temple with a knowing smile. "The fact that we're sitting here, having this conversation with such a lovely conversation piece is a testament to that intelligence. Considering the rabble I normally have to deal with, it's quite a breath of fresh air..." The Nuit gestured lazily towards Luna and the cart as he spoke. "As for your travels, do I really need a reason to want to see more of the world? Regarding your work..." Ignotus frowned for a moment. He knew that he would have to come out and say it at one point or another, but it didn't make the situation any less delicate. When he spoke, it was slowly, with each word carefully enunciated, as if making a mistake in pronunciation would cause him to burst into flame. "You asked for honesty, and you shall receive it. You're a busy man, so I'll be concise. Your profession fascinates me, especially in the way it shapes people... I think you can understand now, why the Zith interested me exactly. It may seem odd to go through all this trouble for what I suppose could be viewed as a bit of entertainment, but ennui is a much larger problem for those such as I than it is for others... Really, most of our fatalities are not from the blades of men or the bite of beasts, but our own boredom. You can see then, hopefully, why I try to keep things interesting for myself." It was curious how the plight of the Nuit seemed to spark sympathy coming from Ignotus' mouth. Perhaps it was just the somber tone, perhaps it was something else. At any rate, Ignotus hoped that he wouldn't have to explain much more. He was starting to grow tired, and his niggling worry was starting to curdle into anxiety. "He can't have too many more questions... Can he?" |
