Hello, Hello, Hello! And Welcome to the Working Corner of Weylin!
Hey look, a front page. Don't worry, it won't looks so plain in the future.


I suppose we should start with a little introduction first; I'm Weylin, University student and consumer of vast amounts of sherry. Other than that there's not else I can say; I suppose I'm just the average run of the mill. Hate to break it, but despite the occasional eccentricities and the occasional writing bug there isn't much else- kind of dull sadly. If questions come my way however, I'll be sure to answer them the best I can.

Project: Travel times.


INTRODUCTION:
As many Mizaharians know, between locations there is vast amount of distance between the cities, which in term consume a lot of time. Now as we all know attempts at calculating the travel times has been attempted various times before using various different methods. Upon looking at all the separate ways that people have used, I have come to a sort of mixture of using all of them.

Note: This post is a work in process thread. It will be constantly changing and updating as time goes on. The reason for posting it in the scrap book is to allow Members to see the development stage of it all. Advice is welcome and appreciated. The reason it's located here, is so the public can still view it and comment without it going completely live and be put up for moderating. Anyway, enjoy!


FACTORS:
Now several assumptions have been made here.
    That Mizhar is one giant land mass without any water. This in the future will be adjusted- however all good things take time.
    That the world is completely flat. This includes the absence of mountains and trees, just a completely straight plain.
    That the amount walked is based on walking for eight hours a day.
    That for every one hour of walking, three miles are covered. (Or one mile every 20 minutes).
    Calculating the amount of days of travel is simply done by dividing the distance by 24 miles. For example in a straight line from Zeltiva to Syliras it is 1375 miles. So simply it equals to: TIME (in days)=1375/24=57.29=57 days (0 dp)

    Disclaimer: All of the data used are averages that have been researched and based on the set travel times and speeds (as stated above). On the chance that your character has different set speeds- due to a mount or different travel patterns, or specific skills and knowledge- please use the linked distance chart found in the references, and adjust the values accordingly- after all it is impossible to cover all possible travel scenarios. In all cases of use the data should only be used as a base to work from, and not an end result.

These results have been gathered using the same equation as stated before: Time (in days)=Distance/24

Now in relation to location, I have provided a list of values below as a suggeted value to be added to the one in the table. The reasons mainly for the day count increase is because of the over all location of the city and the local terrain type.

    Kalea- Mountainous- Add 15 days
    Cyphrus- Plains- Add 5 days
    Taloba- Jungle- Add 15 days
    Eyktol- Desert- Add 5 days
    Taldera- Snow- Add 5 days
    Sylira- Civilised- No change
    Islands & hard to reach- Settlement-Add 20 days

What I may also suggest whilst using this chart is not using it to travel to places in a straight line. Simply because it is impossible to do that when travelling long distances. For example; If one was to travel from Wind Reach to Ahnatep you most certainly wouldn't travel in a straight line to it, mainly because of the vast mountains in the way. So instead of a journey that would supposedly take 177 days if travelling in a straight line would in fact take longer. Realistically you would have to go through at least two cities when travelling and that's because you have to take a boat. A simple travel plan would break down to this (before additions):

Wind Reach to Sultros- 57 days
Sultros to Alvadas- 52 days
Alvadas to Riverfall- 42 days
Riverfall to Ahnatep- 52 days
Total time= 203 days then with the additions (2*Kalea +1 Plains/Desert=35 days) would total to 238 days. That is an increase of 61 days. Of course, it would take this amount of time if you can get through the unforgiven in one piece.


RESOURCES:

Distance Chart- Whether or not this plans to be changed in the near future I'm not sure. But this is the chart that I gathered all my distances from. As stated on the page, these values are straight line distances, so unless you're flying of course it's going to take longer.

Anyway, at 7am GMT time a little bit of encouragement drove me a long way to draw a picture. Not any old picture, but a picture of a mer-badger, because, that's perfectly legit. Anyway, in my dazed half-asleep state, this is the little sketch I produced. Ten points to the person who guesses who it is!
