Alexandre Bertrand Askara

ImageBasics

Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Birthday: 481 AV, 63rd Day of Fall
Birthplace: Sweet Home Askara, Kenash

Appearance

Once upon a happier time, Alexandre was the definition of a Kenash gentleman, with an exceptionally handsome, chiseled face, healthy figure, and a constant air of regality. His clean, crisp clothing reflected a well bred lifestyle and an arrogant tendency to show off the wealth of his often ostentatious family. With intelligent blue eyes, more the color of smoke or ice, and short, artfully arranged hair as black as night - Alexandre was not lacking in admirers, female or otherwise. He had always been among the tallest of the family, brushing just barely higher than 6'2". One of the many physical attributes inherited from an absent father. He was never very muscularly inclined, or physically powerful, but his lean body blessed him with a natural grace and fluidity of movement ever since childhood.

But then much changed, when his accident occurred. The right side of Alexandre's face as well as several other areas of his body were horribly burned in a catastrophe that also took the life of his fiance, which more or less remolded his entire personality. Because of this, and the fact that he hasn't been out during the day since soon after the accident, he looks quite different in the present. His skin lacks any signs of sunlight, only carrying what natural color his complexion possesses, and every piece of his once vibrant clothing has been disposed of. All of the fabrics he now wears reflect his nature. Dark, brooding, passionate - among other adjectives.

ImageAlexandre still dresses to an impressive standard, even if no one ever really sees him. It's more out of habit than anything else. His hair he keeps slicked back and away from his face, half of which is now always covered by a fine porcelain mask. He is clean shaven and scrubbed spotless, with well-kept hygiene. Only his mother and personal slave have seen the wounds that healed from the accident, covered by his clothes and mask, which in his opinion is two too many to have witnessed the aftermath. The burns mar the side of his face so completely that it is unrecognizable from what once was. All there is to go by now is the thankfully preserved left half, still as handsome and chiseled as ever. Though now his blue eyes seem to always be heavy with a deep melancholy.

The rest of the damage is contained under long sleeves and breeches. Alexandre's arm between the elbow and shoulder are severely burned, along with some of his stomach and most of his left leg. The right side of his body, like his face, remains the way it was - an echo of the past. Until his body healed, he suffered from a clumsy limp, but since then his health and grace has returned.

Personality

Before the death of his fiance, Alexandre was a socialite. He went to the renowned Askara parties, rode with his cousins, personally kept up with the going-ons of Kenash - the whole shebang. He was a bright, happy man, with an equally bright and happy future. The family slaves were never mistreated by him, for he was never a heavy-handed man. He had always been the diplomatic sort when he stopped feeling the oats of his youth, and he was respected for that. For an Askara, he was rather normal, almost boring sometimes. After the death of his fiance, though, his personality changed dramatically. Where he was once happy, energetic, and sociable, he is now gloomy, brooding, and silent. Alexandre goes above and beyond to stay away from people, even his own family. He feels that he died with his betrothed, even if his body goes on, and that his soul is irreclaimable.

Now he prefers the seclusion of his rooms at Sharra, communicating regularly through written notes with only one man, the slave that runs his shop in Kenash. Alexandre refuses to leave his rooms until the sun has set, and even then he avoids people like the plague, sneaking and snooping like some sort of apparition. If he actually chooses to leave any given night. People who knew him before, and that actually have the chance to see him now, might notice that a temper has taken root where once there was endless patience. His rope now has an end, and the consequences of him becoming angered are often vicious and unpredictable. He seems almost mercurial, to a degree, jumping back and forth between nearly happy to melancholy once more. Alexandre's mind is currently unstable, and he suffers from sporadic nightmares as well as the occasional hallucination, often involving him seeing his fiance where she isn't.

But the old Alexandre still shines through, at times. He has consumed himself in his work, and when occupied, he can almost forget the past and feel sane. On rare nights he even treats himself out to a field trip into the city, going in partial disguise to mingle with the people. Though he can nearly feel normal during these times, his depression and self-pity is like a pool of tar, clinging to him heavily and never letting go. Aside from his mental instability, Alexandre is very well educated and cultured man, having always loved the pursuit of knowledge of the betterment of himself. Now that he locks himself away most of every day, he has plenty of time to work and research to his broken heart's content.

Name: Cross
Race: Myrian
DoB: 475 AV, 37th Day of Winter
PoB: Taloba
Title: Alexandre Askara's Personal Slave
Skills: 10 Unarmed Combat, 5 Organization, 5 Body Building, 5 Mathematics, 5 Writing
Gnosis: None

Additional Info: Cross was born in Taloba, but has no memories of his wild homeland. When he was just a young boy, he was captured and forced into slavery, along with his parents whom he hasn't seen since. By the will of whatever Gods now controlled his face - for Myri was long forgotten - he ended up in Kenash, and was sold into servitude to the Askara family. Not long after this, he was bestowed upon a very young Alexandre as a personal slave, and by the order of his mother, a bodyguard. He helped raise his fatherless master, with a humble gentleness that was uncommon in Myrians, a took up the unspoken title of a father figure along the way.

Not surprisingly, he's called Cross because of the cross-like scars that give him his fierce appearance. They were given to him by a heavy handed slave driver far before his arrival in Kenash. For several years Alexandre's arrogant upbringing caused Cross much trouble, but over time his master grew to love the Myrian like any son would a good father. Though no one, not even them, would accept the relationship openly, everyone quietly went along with it. Alexandre then taught the hulking Myrian man to read and write, as the years went by and he grew into a cultured gentleman - a far sight from the spoiled child he had once been. Cross also learned simple mathematics, how to run a shop - once Alexandre's opened - and through living at Sweet Home Askara, he became something of a gentleman himself.

Very few people know where and what he did before Kenash, and sometimes he can't remember that well either. It blurs together into a jumble of long days, lashings, shackles, and hard work. He has been owned by many a creature - Zith, human, Dhani - even fellow Myrians. But he seems to have found permanent service with Alexandre, such that can barely even be called slavery. Though since his master's accident things have changed, the two are still very close, even if the Askara man has become volatile and unpredictable. He goes back and forth between shop and home every day, running finished and unfinished works to and fro to his master.

Personality wise, Cross is a surprisingly soft spoken man - likely from the years of servitude he has endured. It is drilled into his bones to follow orders and please, contrasting with the normal Myrian stereotype. Despite being so large, he has never raised a violent hand for any other reasons than to protect his master and any others of the Askara family. He goes diligently about his work every day, and tries to please every customer's needs, no matter how rude they may sometimes be. There is an unspoken rule, though - put in place by Alexandre for the protection of the Myrian - that if anyone disrespects Cross or treats him any less than that of a respectable man, some kind of revenge should be expected of the angered master, however discreet it may be.

Housing

Location: Sweet Home Askara
Suite: After the death of Alexandre's fiance, he was granted the request of relocating his room, and ended up switching with a younger Askara. The youth's cheery bedroom was then dramatically altered. Thick, heavy drapes cover the large bay windows on the far wall, keeping all sunlight out of the suite. His canopy bed, with a locked chest at its foot, as well, is equipped with similar heavy curtains, giving him a sort of hideaway to rest in during the day, when sleep actually finds him. A fireplace with hearth, flanked by bookcases, dictates the wall opposite of his bed. A comfortable armchair, polished end table, and thick rug accompany this half of the room. Piles of books, papers, and scrolls surround the chair, all work from his shop. A desk and heavy, straight backed chair sit in front of his curtained windows, covered with scrap notes, trinkets, and other miscellaneous items.

Closer to the door than any other of his items, but still near his bed, is an eating table and two chairs where he takes his meals. In the makeshift area that is made between a wall, his table, and bed, is where the rest of his belongings are kept. An armoire for his clothing, a wash basin, and a small, screened off corner with a wash tub for his baths. A full scale painting of his deceased fiance hangs above the fireplace between his two bookcases, dictating the room. All of the wood, including trim and floors, is dark and polished. The fabrics and cushions are all deep colors; in essence making Alexandre's room a cave. Candles burn in votives and on holders all over his suite, offering all of the light he wants. Other various end tables decorate the room, as well as a long, low settee.

To him, the room is a comfortable sanctuary, offering him total seclusion. The door is always locked, and he keeps the key on his person at all times. The suite's bay windows also lead off onto a small balcony, but he hasn't used it in several years.

Business

Name of Business: The Thumbed Page
Type of Business: Scribing, Copying, Forgery, and Merchandise
Location: Kenash
Description: The Thumbed Page is one of many businesses squeezed into the hectic hustle and bustle of Dry Island Plaza. To most, it's rather like every other building on the square, though clean and very well kept. A wrought iron gate opens up to the entrance of the shop, with its large wooden door and high archway. For curb appeal, several plants have been placed by the doorway on the tidy stone steps. For those who take a look inside the shop's front windows, the professional yet almost homey interior has on several occasions coaxed prospective customers inside, hoping to escape the humid air, cold winter, or an unpleasant rain.

Polished, dark wood floors extend throughout the entire store, in both the main room and storage area. The sleek counter that dictates the area to the right is of the same wood, appearing to seamlessly rise from the floor. The walls have matching wainscoting, and what isn't boarded is painted a very tasteful purple. Large rustic beams cross the plain white ceiling, feeding the comfortable atmosphere of the shop. Just as one walks in, on the far left is a floor to ceiling fireplace and hearth, constructed of rough, naturally shaped stones. On colds days a fire blazes, giving the store a warm glow and desirable temperature to banish shivers from the body. People are welcome to come in and sit just to escape the cold, if anything else. A couch and two armchairs are arranged for seating, made of soft, well cushioned leather. Wall sconces with pillar candles are lit around the long shop for light.

The other half of the room - with the counter - is where most of the wares are. A bookcase with scrolls, scrollcases, books, and artfully arranged papers, quills, and a few vials of ink are the main focus. Stored in glass cases are the higher quality of the same items, as well as on the shelves dotting the store. The rest of all stock is kept in the storage room in the back - the door to which is behind the counter - inaccessible to all but Cross, the store clerk, and Alexandre Askara, the owner - who hasn't been there during open hours for five years. Inside is also a safe for profits made, bolted to the floor.

Cross keeps things running as smoothly as possible. He looms at his post, imposing but oddly enough welcoming, at the same time. Ever willing to answer questions and help customers, he encourages inquiries and conversation with all the eloquence that has been trained into him. He wears a uniform while on duty - a crisp white shirt and black pants with plain black leather boots and a fastened belt, complimenting himself and the shop rather well. There is no doubt to anyone who walks in the door that the man is a two-in-one employee, guard and clerk, what with his barrel of a chest and rippling arms. But he has a pleasant smile waiting for every face he sees each day, and with his rich, deep voice, he banishes most unease rather quickly.

There is an upstairs, it being a two story building, but Alexandre does not own that floor. It is empty and locked up tight. The back entrance leads out into the alley behind the line of shops that the Thumbed Page is attached to, and a hitching rail with water trough awaits for the nights that Alexandre deems it necessary to visit.

Services provided - those that are legal - are displayed on an additional plaque hanging from the bottom of the shop's sign outside, reading Copying, Proofreading, and Quality Wares. Lesser known services provided are heard through word of mouth, which is, by and large, forgery. That business is conducted elsewhere, and locations to meet vary on Alexandre's mood and the day. Interest in these services are first brought to Cross, who then passes on the message.
