Tavan: Remi, an 8 year old male spectacled caiman weighing 47lbs and stretching 6'2" from snout to tail. Oddly, he seems to be the more moral of the pair, and the more ethical.

Character History

Opal firmly believes that the world is hers for the asking - a belief supported by her upbringing. As a younger sister of Orkat Draer, few expectations were placed on her: she was not expected to run the plantation, or even a terribly successful business venture. When, at an early age, her interests turned to music, the family encouraged her pursuit - what harm could come of it? And so she was given the run of the plantation and every musical instrument her little heart pined for. It was not long before her parents, siblings and cousins learned 'what harm' music could be; headaches abounded while Opal practiced her way into passable musicianship.

But by the time Opal turned 10, she had settled on the lute as her weapon of choice. Once she focused her attention on a single outlet, she progressed rapidly into a capable performer. Using her lute to escape the doldrums of her wealthy life, Opal found that happiness lay in the melodies she plucked out. This ignited a true desire for betterment and led to her skulking about the plantation - particularly the slave's quarters - hoping to hear snippets of unfamiliar tunes to add to her repertoire.

Being on the receiving end of several scoldings for her interest in the doings of lesser folk, Opal found her freedoms restricted. This first taste of 'no' did not sit well with her, and led to her devising sneakier methods for ever more risky behaviors. It was on one such clandestine adventure that she first became acquainted with her Tavan, Remi. If not discouraging her from dangerous activities, at least the caiman was able to dissuade other predators from turning Opal's expeditions into tragedies.

Thus began an interesting adolescence. Opal and Remi were frequent companions, and she was not averse to using the reptile's implied threat to get her way a time or two. She found that most of the local children did not have her access to a large and protective predator - a fact which resulted in her acquisition of several pretty baubles. She did eventually grow out of her intimidation tactics - or Remi refused to cooperate any longer, who can say? But in any case, they continue to have an astonishingly close bond, and at times Opal swears she's seen him bobbing his head in time to her music...




The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.

Heirloom: An elaborately belled and embroidered silken atani, subtly weighted so as to provide a modicum of protection, should one need it. And really - what Svefra doesn't need just a tiny bit more protection? The atani was gifted to Opal by her mother, years ago. She wears it infrequently, in an attempt to prolong the life of the delicate accessory/weapon.

Additional Info: Close-mouthed about how he came to be a slave, when asked, Abdeh simply replies that it is his due. Purchased in his much younger years as breeding stock for the Draer Dynasty, he has led a relatively undemanding life. Abdeh learned early on not to get attached to the female slaves he was sent to, and never inquired as to whether the children he sired remained with the Draers, were sold elsewhere, or even if they survived childhood - many slave children in the swamplands did not.

Reaching an advanced age meant that Abdeh's former duties were no longer feasible. Recently the most arduous task he has been called to perform has been entertaining the family at informal gatherings. When his duties moved to Opal Draer's music shop, Abdeh was as close to happy as he'd been in years. Handling the artistic orders at Rhaus' Harp allows him to spend time doing the creative jobs that he enjoys, while surrounded by music - some of it good.

Additional Info: Rashel was born on the Riverwave Plantation; her parentage is unknown to her. She was told only that her mother died in childbirth, and her father was one of the male slaves. The female slaves raised her amongst themselves, teaching her bits and pieces of what they knew. Rashel learned storytelling at their hands and began to study written words, tracing their wobbly lines in the dirt whenever the opportunity arose. Unfortunately this wasn't often, as she was soon put to work in the fields.

Having rudimentary writing skills and an artistic bent was enough to have Rashel pulled out of the Draer fields and placed in Opal Draer's shop, Rhaus' Harp. Her workload is light now, and routine, which gives her plenty of opportunity to daydream. Lately her thoughts have swirled around her parents: who they were, if her father is still alive, and what her heritage might be.
