Angela had not been able to sleep well lately. Being in the underground rooms was somewhat unpleasant for there was no sun, and the only link to the outside was the air vent in her wall. She was use to the morning light greeting her each day, and she missed sitting on her window sill watching the people walk by. But on this night, she was uneasy, not because of the lack of windows but instead of something different. She tossed and turned in her bunk, feeling restless, then finally sat up and looked around her room.

It was mostly dark, except for the fading light her hearth gave her, and her room was also mostly empty. But her eyes found what they were looking for as they settled on her bag. She got up and rummaged though it until she found what she was looking for. Her tarot deck. It was a standard deck and the cards were tied together with an old leather strip. This is what she had been missing, her tarot deck, a sense of purpose.

Angela put on her clothes and draped her cloak over her shoulders. Tonight she would continue what her old life had started. And besides, this was her job. She was a certified fortune teller in the city of Syliras.

When she left the bottom floors where the residents were housed, she wondered where she would go. She wondered along the streets until she came across a place that was most familiar to her. The Rearing Stallion. The last time she had been in here, there was a bar fight that she had tried to stop. She pushed her way inside, for there were plenty of drunk people standing around the entrance mingling among themselves.

As she took a seat at one of the corner tables, she became slightly nervous. How much money should she ask for, or better yet, how would anyone know to come to her? Maybe the best way to call attention to herself would be to openly show what she had. She had to make a name for herself, and the only way she thought to do it was to appeal to people's curiosity. So Angela pulled off her cloak, making herself comfortable, and placed her cards out on the table. She pulled a few cards from the deck and set them into a familiar pattern. Her nerves eased a little as she started reviewing the cards. This was where she ruled - here in front of her deck was her real home.

Another night at The Rearing Stallion.

How petchin' wonderful.

He'd finished up at the shop only a bell or two ago. He'd stayed late to help reorganize the shelves, and now more than anything else, he wanted a strong drink. He wanted two strong drinks. Petch, he'd drink until he passed out if he had to.

Something was bothering him. He knew exactly what it was. It wasn't some unknown, many-tentacled shadow of a fret. It was his sister. She was all that he could think about. Had been since she'd been taken from him. He couldn't get her off of his mind for more than a few moments of his time. Even now, just thinking of her was enough to make his stomach clench.

He grimaced and rubbed his arm.

A quick look around the tavern revealed no familiar faces. Petchin' course not. He didn't have many that he considered "friends" per se, but he was never opposed to running into an acquaintance every now and again. Kept him from turning into a hermit. He liked their company, took his mind off of Selene, however briefly.

The crowd split, and for the tiniest fraction of a second, he could make out a table with an empty seat. He muscled his way through the press of people, stopping short of the table and cocking an eyebrow.

Tarot cards? What a petchin' place to read the future. Tavern in Syliras. Thought those mystics were more...well...mystical.

He chuckled darkly and continued on toward the table. He pulled the chair out and sat, opposite the girl with the cards.

"Soothsayer soothsayer say me a sooth," he said, still chuckling inwardly. His eyes twinkled with mischief and curiousity.

[The Rearing Stallion] A Night of Fortune Telling

Angela had been studying her cards closely, recalling each meaning from heart. It really wasn't all that hard, considering how much time she had spent before studying and watching her mother. She was trying hard not to recall her old life, but instead focus on what she was doing. She didn't even hear the man approach her table. "Soothsayer soothsayer say me a sooth," he said with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. Her head snapped up as he startled her a little, then her lips turned up in a smile. She would have to be more aware of her surroundings.

"Say you a sooth, hmm?" She took the cards that she was looking at and slipped them randomly into her deck. Maybe she would make it in this job after all, for if one already approached her, then surely more would be interested. "How can I help you this evening? My services cost only one gold Miza."

Surely that would be enough, maybe if she got a handful of patrons every night or so. Angela remembered her mother would always adjust her prices to read even for the poorer patrons. But that was only because she had so many people that came to the house, and she could afford to do so. Angela on the other hand knew that she would probably have no such luck. She started to shuffle her deck as she waited patiently for his reply.

She was younger than she'd first looked from across the room. His heart twinged. Another grimace distorted his mouth. He recovered quickly, running a hand through his hair and lounging back in the uncomfortable chair. Selene would only have a year or two, tops, on the girl across from him. He hadn't seen her in so long. Gods, but was she even alive? He forced the thoughts of his sister from his head once more.

"I doubt you can help me," he said, smiling a wistful smile. He'd always seen fortune-telling as a trick. The fortunes always seemed to be vague, disjointed, and open to a thousand petchin' interpretations. Maybe he could be proved wrong. He'd been wrong about the Gods. They sure as shyke were real, a fact that he could attest to personally.

Petchin' Ivak and his petchin' mark.

He tugged at his sleeve subconsciously before reaching for a piece of gold. He held it between his fingers and set it, edge first on the table. He looked up at the girl and gave it a spin, leaning back in his chair once more as the coin twirled on the wooden table.

"Hope for your sake you're not some charlatan, peddling false hope for the desperate. That'd be a petchin' shame."

He kept his eyes on her, never once glancing at the spinning coin, even as its revolutions slowed and stopped. He kept his eyes on her.

"Let's see what fate's got in store for me."

Angela noticed that the man seemed briefly upset when he looked at her, but that was just that, brief. He quickly turned a smile on her. "I doubt you can help me," he said, as she had heard so many times before. It was common for people to come out of desperation. Usually, that is what the fortune teller was for, they provide answers where no other place can. The man tugged on his sleeve before producing a gold coin and setting it to spin in the table. She glanced at it, but not hungrily. The patron was more important than the money.

When she looked back up at him, he was looking at her closely."Hope for your sake you're not some charlatan, peddling false hope for the desperate. That'd be a petchin' shame," the man said. She almost laughed and quickly snatched the coin from the table and offered it back to him.

"Really sir, if you doubt me so much, then I don't wish to waste your time. I'd rather starve than have a patron go home with a heavy heart and doubtful mind." She paused for a moment, "Although," she said thoughtfully, "If you truly need something proven to you, I could tell you something about your past for free. Then after that you can decide to look into your future. Deal?" She smiled, feeling confidant in her abilities. This was, after all, her whole life.

He caught her quick glance at the coin. It didn't take long for her eyes to return to his. So, she considered herself a professional. Putting the man before the mizas. Razkar had done something similar when they'd first met. He had to admit it worked well enough.

Her hands were quick as well. He watched her snatch the coin from the table and offer it back to him. He smiled crookedly. Most of his smiles were crooked; one corner of his mouth curled slightly, the other straight and stoic.

"Don't call me sir lass. I'm not that much older than you," he said, chuckling. He watched her as she thought, formulating her words inside her mind. "Do as you like. Let's see what you've got. You tell me something that no one else'd know, and I'll let you tell my future. Petch. I'll pay for the reading and I'll buy you a glass of wine."
