12th of Summer, 513AV

The sky still had the colorful glow of early morning as Savio approached the address of his new job. He had spent the day before waiting in line at the Employment office, and today was to be his first day as a Nykan Courier. To be fully honest, Savio was a bit nervous since he had never had to work anywhere other than at his father’s farm back home in Syliras. But the young man refused let his anxiety dampen his optimistic outlook on his new trade.

It was not let seven bells as he knocked on the thick wooden door. At first he could hear nothing within, but then he caught the sound of footsteps walking towards him. The door opened up to reveal a tired looking older man. He was rubbing one of his eyes while the other one was fixed on Savio, examining him with mild curiosity.

“Well? Are you just going to stand there or are you going to tell me what it is that you want?” The man said. His voice was more like the rumble of thunder: deep and intimidating, and it held the typical Nykan accent.

Savio swallowed hard and offered a smile to the man. “Good morning, my name is Savio Cazzola. I was sent here for a courier job?” The monk back at the Office had said that his new employer was going to be informed of Savio. The young man hoped that it was true.

The man yawned and nodded.
“Ah, so you are the new guy. Very well then, come in.”

The man stepped aside and held the door open for Savio. Once he was inside, Savio inspected his new surroundings. The Post was small for an office, and was filled to the brim with different packages and papers. Savio assumed that they were things that were to be delivered. Off to the side sat a desk that was also covered with papers and packages, and behind the desk on the wall there was a map of Nyka with different colored pins marking specific places around the city.

The man cleared his throat and Savio’s attention was directed back to the man who Savio now assumed was his boss.
“As you can see, we are a little bit backed up.”

“How many do you have working for you?”

“Not nearly enough. Now, here is your satchel to help you carry your deliveries, since you will be carrying many at a time.” The man handed Savio a bag that had a long strap to go over the young man’s shoulder and held the Post’s symbol on the front flap. “And here is also a writ of passage that will allow you to get into certain areas, like inside monk headquarters and such. Don’t abuse it.” The man handed Savio a small slip of parchment, but pinned Savio with a cold stare as he said the last words. Savio nodded with wide eyes before the man let go and Savio was able to tuck the parchment safely away.

The man then looked Savio over, frowning.
“You look fast, but you also appear to be a foreigner. How long have you been in Nyka?”

“Well, I have only been here for three days. But I am a fast learner, and I will do my best to learn the layout of the city soon.” Savio replied with earnest. He didn’t want to lose this job just because he didn’t know his way around.

The man sighed loudly and cursed in what Savio assumed was the Nykan language.
“So be it. I will regulate your route to just this Quarter, also known as the Eastern Quarter, and the Celestial Quarter. But only for a few days, so you better learn fast. Then I will expand your route gradually.”

Savio smiled as the man walked over to go through some of the items that needed to be delivered, picking and choosing certain ones before handing Savio two packages and three tied scrolls. Savio carefully tucked his charges away into his new messenger bag.

“The items each have the address of their destination on them so that you will know where they go. When you reach the destination, the addressee will pay the delivery fee and if they are feeling generous, they will pay you a tip. But don’t expect much in the way of the tip. Sometimes, the delivery fee is paid beforehand and will be marked as such on the package or scroll. If that’s the case, just hand them their stuff and leave. Understand?”

It was a lot of information to take in but Savio nodded. He understood most of it. It was a rather easy set up. Savio was about to leave when the man stopped him once again.

“One last thing. When you finish with this batch of deliveries, return here for more. After two sets, you are allowed to leave for the day. You can do more, if you wish. But before you go home for the day, make sure you drop off your satchel and Writ of Passage here. That is all.”

Savio nodded again as exited the building. His first delivery was here in the Eastern Quarter, and it appeared to not be too far. That is where he will go first. Savio turned to the direction of his destination and started running. Today was going to be a rather eventful day.

The narrow streets of Nyka were still slightly bare since it was so early in the morning. This proved to be both a problem and a blessing. He didn’t have to worry about bumping into people as he ran, but that also meant that he couldn’t ask anyone for directions. He slowed his running into a jog so that he could get his bearings. The first address had to be around here somewhere. Savio looked around at the red stone buildings, trying to find the house whose address matched the one on the package.

Ah! There is was! Savio trotted over to the door and knocked. The house was small, but nicely kept. Such homes were strange to the native of Syliras. He was used to Districts of back home, and their indoor markets and endless hallways and corridors. Everything in Nyka was different, but it wasn’t too bad. Savio knew better than to assume that the rest of the world was like Syliras, it just made the young man a little more home sick. Savio shook his head to clear his thoughts as he knocked at the door once more.

There was a shout from within, and then footsteps. The door was opened by a groggy man dressed in a simple housecoat. He glared at Savio with utter distain.
“By all that is unholy in the aperture, why are you banging on my door this early in the morning?”

Savio offered an apologetic smile as he pulled out the package from his bag. “Delivery for a Za-dra-vu-ko?” Savio flinched at how badly he butchered the man’s name.

The man seemed to get even more angry as he snatched the package from Savio’s hands.
“It’s Zdravko.” The man growled as he paid Savio the delivery fee before slamming the door in his face. On the other side, Savio could hear a muttered “Petching foreigners… “

Savio sighed as he quickly moved away from the house. I guess some folks aren’t morning people. Savio thought silently to himself as he started off in the direction of the next address. This time, he was delivering a scroll to a Matija Dragic. The name told Savi that the person was a native of Nyka and he hoped that this one was going to be a bit nicer.

Savio ran at an easy pace, doing his best to figure out what street lead to what road or avenue. It was daunting and Savio had found himself lost on several occasions. As the time passed, the streets started to fill with more and more people. He was able to ask a few people for directions, but most of the populace seemed to be just as tired or grumpy as his customer. Did people find that waking up in the morning to be that much of a chore? Savio thought idly to himself as he ran to the address after receiving a few directions from a half asleep woman.

This next location was a small shop that sold little odd-n-ends. Savio stepped inside and his nose was assaulted with the smell of old books and dust. He had to sneeze several times into the crook of his elbow before he could even talk to the elderly woman standing behind a counter. The woman had a bemused expression as Savio finally stepped forward and greeted her with a stuffy nose.

“Hello, I have a delivery. Is this by chance your name?” Savio pointed to the name labeled on the scroll and the woman chuckled and nodded.

“Yes, my name is Matija Dragic.” Her voice was slow and raspy, but it was also comforting. She handed Savio several laats as she accepted the scroll from him.

Savio frowned in confusion. “Ma’am, it seems you have given me too much.”

The woman chuckled as she waved him away good naturedly.
“Accept the two extra laats as a token of my gratitude. Have a good day, young man.”

Savio was smiling like a fool as he tucked the laats away in his satchel and took off running once more. The other deliveries he had were destined for the Celestial Quarter. At least he knew that area a little better since he had to search high and low for the Hostel and the Employment Office.

The first address in the Celestial Quarter was easy enough to find, since it was very close to the Celestial side of what the Nykans call 'The Bridge of the Beginning'. This particularly short bridge connected East to Center and stretched over the narrowest part of the aperture. Savio had to be mindful of the praying people as he hurried past to get to the next destination.

This transaction went on without a single hitch. The customer was neither pleased nor annoyed by Savio as they accepted the package, and even gave Savio a single extra Laat as a tip. It wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing.

Much of Savio’s day continued in that way. After delivering the last two scrolls to their addressees, Savio promptly returned to his boss who seemed rather pleased that Savio wanted another batch of deliveries.

“Normally, the new ones only ask for one round until they get better but you seem to be cut from a different cloth. Very well, here you go.” He piled Savio with three packages this time, and 4 scrolls. His satchel was weighed down greatly as he hurried out the door.

Gradually, Savio was starting to get the hang of both the Eastern and the Celestial Quarters. By the time it was midday though, the young man was exhausted and his legs and feet hurt terribly. It was then that he realized why most new people only took one load of deliveries on the first few days. This was hard work.

It was possible that the only reason that he hadn’t fallen over in his exhaustion was because he was used to hard work and cardio that came with working on his father’s farm and practicing acrobatics. But in some sick and twisted sort of way, Savio loved this. The ache of his muscles cramping in his legs and at his side, and the burn in his lungs. It felt as amazing as it hurt. He knew that his body was changing, adapting, and growing. Of course, tomorrow morning he wouldn’t feel the same. Chances were that he would have to literally crawl out of bed due to the acute soreness he will feel.

The first two deliveries were delivered without flaw, but he didn’t get any tips. But the next delivery was more troublesome. He couldn’t see to find the address. He wondered around for nearly two bells trying to find the building until he realized that there was a small stall in the exact location where the building should have been and he had looked over it time and time again.

Savio approached the stall with a casual smile on his face. The young man standing at the stall instantly perked up at the sight of a potential customer. But there seemed to be something sneaky about guy, and Savio became cautious.

“Ah! Hello there, Ser! How can I help you to day? Can I interest you in come lovely trinkets for your wife? Or a pair of new boots, or maybe even a-“

Savio held up his hand to interrupt the young man. “I am not here to buy anything. I have a delivery for you.” Savio kept his voice light and calm.

The man looked disappointed for a moment before nodding and holding his hand out for the package. Savio handed him the package and waited for the payment. The young man tucked the package away and went back to what he was doing, not giving Savio a second glance.

Savio narrowed his eyes. “Excuse me, but you need to pay the delivery fee.”

The guy looked up with a raised eye brow.
“It was already paid for.”

Savio shook his head and gestured to the package the other man had stashed away. “If it was paid for, it would have been mark on there. It wasn’t marked. Now please make the payment or give me back the package.” Savi’s tone became harder. He was not in the mood to deal with this guy’s antics. He was tired and wanted to get this round of deliveries done so he could turn in his satchel for the day and get some food and sleep at the Hostel.

The man smirked cockily at Savio and leaned in close to the young acrobat over his table of wares.
“Who are the monks going to believe? Me? Or a foreigner? “

Savio glared, his temper rising by the second. “I might be a foreigner, but my employer is not. I think he has a better standing with the monks than you do. I wonder what the monks will think of someone trying to steal from him.”

The man froze in place, his smirk instantly disappearing from his face.
“Um… There would be need for that. Here, take this.” He handed Savio the delivery fee, plus three extra laats. “Tis just a small joke between friends. No?” Savio snorted before walking off. He didn’t even bother to reply to the petcher. Who did that guy think he was? Trying to con Savio out of laats that were not even his… The nerve of some people!

The rest of the day sped by as Savio finished his last deliveries and then returned back to his Employer as the sky was starting into the color of Dusk. The older man laughed at the tired expression on Savio’s face as he clasped the smaller man’s back. Savi handed his now empty satchel and the Laats he had collected over to his boss. The man seemed pleased at what Savio had acquired. He then handed Savio back the tips that he was due and sent the boy away for the remainder of the evening.

Savio trudged back to the Hostel, and only offered Vysia a weak greeting before climbing up the stairs to his room. He thought he caught a glimpse of a humored smile on the older woman’s face, but Savio was too tired to care. He changed out his clothes and was fast asleep before his head hit the pillow.
