AppearanceRace: Drykas
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Birthday: 13th of Fall, 494 AV
Birthplace: Northwest Cyphrus, not far from the Suvan Sea.
Appearance: Reekhas could pass for a Benshira, with her bright blue eyes, dusky skin and long red braid that she typically keeps loosely wrapped around her neck. If not for the red and goldenrod windmarks on her face. She stands about a head taller than a good deal of her neighbors, female or otherwise and is prone to walking through the sand barefoot.
Character ConceptReekhas is a Stranger in a Strange land, and outsider learning to cope with a region, people and customs who are not her own.
Character HistoryReekhas was born and raised in the Sea of Grass, and lived a pretty typical life, up until the day she was chosen by her Strider, Arkhus. Her family rejoiced. They made their way to Endrykas, where she would receive her windmarks. And then everything went to hell in a hand basket. To this day, Reekhas isn't sure exactly what attacked, only that it spooked the horses beyond belief, scattered her family during their travel and somehow, somehow severed her connection to the web. Her entire life she'd been able to contact her family via the web, and now...nothing.
Panic seized the girl as she raced around the plains, desperately trying to find her way to her family. Days passed and her Strider collapsed, dying of exhaustion. She stayed with Akrhus for a few hours and fretted and cried and hit her stomach to stop it from growling.
There were no animals to hunt. No food to gather. Nothing but the isolated Drykas youth and..her dead strider. She wept as she apologized to the creature, even as she butchered and cooked the meat.
Sometime shortly thereafter, she caught onto the way to Endrykas and made her way towards it on foot. She was a bizarre and unnerving sight as she walked almost lifelessly toward the Sky-Eye Pavillions, covered in dirt and dried blood. If one asked her, she couldn't say she remembered much from that time, only that it felt like she wasn't really there for it. Like the entire affair was happening to some other poor girl.
They set about getting her marked, reattaching her to the Web and first and foremost getting her fed and rested.
In respect of her current, incredibly fragile mental state, her family elected to keep her marking a quiet, subdued and private affair. Celebrations would come after she stopped trying to silently cry herself to sleep.
It was during this quiet, private affair that the reason for her crying was addressed. She started sobbing and mumbling Arkhus' name. And her aunt misreading the situation told her not to fret. That Arkhus had the soul of a survivor. That he was a strong, clever and damned fine horse, and a Strider besides. And no matter how the Winds howl, no matter how the rain and snow falls, no matter how hot the sun bakes, a Strider always returns.
It was more than Reekhas could bare. She shrieked at her aunt that no, Arkhus was no going to return, that it was because of her. She told them she ate him.
In a fair world, this would have been the end of the matter. But the world's never really claimed to be fair, has it?
Rumors spread throughout Endrykas like wildfire, and each retelling seemed to paint her as more and more cruel, some of the less savory ones even suggested it wasn't actually Reekhas that had returned at all, but a monstrous Changeling wearing her face. Eventually, she was brought before the Ankal. Who had decided that all extenuating circumstances aside, Reekhas did disobey one of the seven laws. The Topaz clan was called in to oversee her exile.
There was little her family could do for her. Well not exactly little, Her Father threatened to mutilate the next person who suggested they remove her Wind Marks. And her Aunt, shortly after the ruling was gave the Ankal a swift, firm and very public kick in the groin.
Of course, whatever octaves his word was made, when spoken it was final. The Topaz rode on their Striders while pulling her along on foot, stopping at the border of Eyktol. With no sympathy, nor ceremony they cut her bonds and rode off. They didn't bother telling her what would happen if they caught her still in the Sea of Grass. She knew.
And so, little Reekhas walked into the Burning Lands. It nearly destroyed her. The only thing that saved her was the kindness of the people she met. a Traveling Eypharian Merchant who took her in and saved her from dying of heat exhaustion. A gang of Chaktawe that rescued her from a horrifying beast with glowing red eyes. And finally, a Benshira that fed and clothed her and taught her Shiber.
Fast forward a few months later and Reekhas for the first time has a tent of her own, a horse to ride and the occasional run of work when these Goat Herders need a horse properly broken in. She is still determined though find her place in the world. Or for the lack of that, friends who are a little feel less lost than she is.
