A Stack Of Parchment

Adoros indicated a crate of a small, dried fruit that Tsaba was pretty sure she'd never seen before. 'Cherries', the salesman had called them... She lifted one to her nose and sniffed experimentally. The sharp, sweet scent, left faint from the drying process, was unfamiliar.

She was pretty sure that humans were meant to fatten up on heavier food than tiny dried fruits. Craun had always fed his patients grains, or a base of bread with as much cream as he could force them to drink. It was a good thing that Adoros was willing to take the lead, because she probably would've made a mistake and bought him cheese and bread or something. But she figured that the boy new better than she. Of course, that didn't answer the question of how much a child was supposed to eat.

"A quarter-pound of these, please," she asked the wiry salesman.

"Two gold," the salesman informed her as he scooped cherries into a small bag. She handed the money over and took the bag from him, handing it straight to the child.

"Want anything to go with the cherries, Adoros?" she asked with a smile. She vaguely recalled that eating just one thing could be boring.

"bought"0.25lb cherries -- 2GM

A Stack Of Parchment

Bread and Cheese were both lovely, but that was something Adoros could get regularly at the Orphanage; dried cherries, on the other hand, was something Adoros got a chance to eat very little. Thus, he wasted little time after the bag of cherries were handed to him to pop a few of the fruit into his mouth. Chewing on the dried fruit, its flavor mingling with his taste buds, brought a lazy smile to his face, something that was genuine and not forced. Adoros did enjoy his cherries.

Not only did he enjoy them, Adoros also wanted others to enjoy the cherries. So, once Tsaba had exchanged money with the vendor for the fruit, Adoros reached into his bag. Pulling out a handful of the dried fruit, Adoros held them out for the woman to take. He couldn't possibly ask her if she even liked the fruit, so the mute went out on a limb, hoping she would accept his gift.

While Adoros waited for the woman to accept the cherries in his right hand, Adoros noticed for the first time that the woman had. . . something beneath both of her eyes. To the mute, they almost looked like black smudges, stains from ink maybe. Who knows how long they had been there, and Adoros had actually let this woman go out in public with them. Did she even know they were there?

With his right hand occupied, Adoros used his left hand for some impromptu sign language with this woman. Pointing at her first, hoping to signal that he was talking about her, he then used his index finger to wipe underneath both of his eyes. Hopefully he would understand he was drawing attention to the discoloring under her eyes.

Since this woman had been so nice to him this day, the last thing he wanted was for her to walk around Zeltiva with ink stains under her eyes.

"Oh," Tsaba said, looking at the cherries. "Thank you, but I..." she caught herself before explaining that she wasn't hungry. Tempting as it was to lie about her... condition... given some of the reactions she'd gotten, Adoros had been honest and straightforward with her, and she owed him the same courtesy. "I don't eat, actually," she said, lowering her voice so that the vendor wouldn't hear; he'd ceased to pay attention to them anyway, now that it was clear that they weren't going to give him any more money. She was glad that Adoros was enjoying the cherries, though. His sincere smile was pleasant reassurance of a job well done. Perhaps she could buy him something else, and make him smile more. What did children like? It had been so long...

When he indicated that something was under her eyes, she reached up and rubbed them automatically. It took her a moment to understand what he was indicating.

"Oh! They're... a birthmark, I guess," she explained. "My eyes always look like that." Perhaps she should do something about that. Makeup, maybe. "It's sort of a family trait. No cause for concern." She tried a reassuring smile, before changing the subject. "So, um... have you always lived in Zeltiva?" Stupid question. He's a street rat, where else would he be from?
