Dinner Talk

Postby Syveris on November 21st, 2013, 8:58 pm

87th of Fall, 513 AV
Evening

Syveris entered the Kitchens, quiet, after her mentor. In truth, she wasn't hungry, even after the hard and continuous work in the Glass Reverie. However, Virat had convinced her to eat with him, and she followed the Avora, knowing that the invitation was not only for dinner, but also one to talk about what was bothering her. Syveris didn't truly wish to talk, but she would end up doing so sooner or later, so she just gave up and accepted to go with him.

Virat guided her to the food line, where she grabbed a plate without really seeing what was in it. There was a small piece of meat, and it was enough for her. She waited for her mentor to chose what he wanted to eat, and then, both of them walked to one of the small tables, that was still empty. Sitting down, Syveris started to eat, waiting for the question that she was sure it would come.

"How are you feeling?"

"Fine." she answered, but shook her head immediately after. It wasn't true, and something she had learned was that she couldn't lie to Virat. "Tired. Not physically, but... Well, maybe physically, too. I just want to know what is going on."

"You were in the Aeries when the storm hit." it wasn't a question. It had been Virat that had sent her there, so she could deliver the dishware for the Endal that had commissioned it. Her mentor had apologized when they first met after the storm, and he seemed more concerned than ever, but Syveris was grateful to him, in a way. If she had not been there, she wouldn't have been able to help Turrin, Kovac and Alori to rescue the others. "How was it?"

"Awful." she occupied herself with a piece of meat, chewing slowly, hoping that Virat would say something else, to free her from elaborating. He didn't, but she was already expecting it. "I saw people dying, right in front of me. I was hit by the glass that broke. I was worried sick about everyone. It was just that. Awful." she whispered, angrily.

It was a while before she spoke again, and during the time they both ate in silence, Syveris concentrating on her food more than what was needed. She wondered if she should tell Virat about the nightmares. He was her friend, but still, was it alright to bother the glassworker with something he had no control over?

"I have also... Been having nightmares." he raised his head, but Syveris kept staring at her plate. "Nothing too elaborated. Just... I just see them all die again and again. Is a little..." she shook her head. There wasn't really a word to describe it.

Virat seemed satisfied with her explanation, though, because he focused once again in eating. Syveris knew her mentor was probably thinking of ways he could help, but there was none, in her opinion.

Besides, she would get over it with time. Azira had said that her nightmares had gone away, after all.

Dinner Talk

Postby Syveris on November 21st, 2013, 10:50 pm

After a few chimes, Virat raised his head again, looking at her until Syveris shifted in her chair, feeling uncomfortable. He probably wanted to ask something, but was waiting to see if she would want to continue the talk. Syveris didn't want to. Actually, she preferred to just pretend the nightmares weren't happening at all. Maybe they would go away faster like this.

"I don't really want to talk about all this..." she whispered, not raising her head. "I'll be fine. It's just some stupid nightmares. They will go away." that was what she kept telling herself.

"Well, I won't ask if you don't want me to." Virat said, although the look he sent her let it clear that he didn't believe that everything was alright. "So, what do you want to talk about?"

Syveris thought for a while. In truth, she didn't really want to talk, just sit and finish her meal. However, maybe the Avora should search for an unimportant subject, so she would be able to take her mind off the more upsetting things for a while. Remembering something, Syveris smiled to herself.

"Well, I volunteered for the Aviary. I know I already told you that, but it has been fun. More than I thought it would be. After the first time, I was a little discourage to go back, because it looked like all I would be doing would be cleaning the birds' cages, and at first I thought it would be boring. But it's not. It was really nice, actually." Syveris knew she was talking a lot, but the smile in Virat's face told her he didn't mind it.

"I'm glad." her mentor told her. "Specially because you haven't given up after the first time. Sometimes it's hard to keep you interested in something long enough for you to actually learn it."

Syveris pouted. "Well, it's because most things are boring."

"Yes, well, you would have found the Aviary boring too, if you hadn't tried a second time." Syveris remained quiet, not wanting to say her mentor was right. Virat chuckled. "Regardless, I'm glad you are enjoying it."

"See... I was thinking..." Syveris began, unsure if she should continue the question. Every time she had tried to ask something related to the egg Virat had given her on her birthday, he seemed to change subjects, as if he was unwilling to answer. Shrugging, she decided to just keep going. "Why did you gave me an egg? I mean... I'm more than happy, but..."

"I just thought you would be happy. It's not a new idea, but I wanted you to focus on you apprenticeship before anything else. Since you're almost ready, I figured it would be a nice present for you." Virat interrupted her, before she could keep going on and on about what she had meant.

"Then, how did you get it?" she decided to push it a little more, encouraged by the direct answer she had recieved. This time, however, her mentor stared at her a while, before sighing.

"Always curious, aren't you?" Syveris thought it was a normal thing, to be curious about that, but she kept quiet. "I bought it from a merchant in Thunder Bay. His bird had laid three eggs, and he wanted to sell them, for some reason." when Virat saw that Syveris was pressing her lips together, as if not really believing that he was withholding such a simple answer, he continued. "It's true, Syveris. He is probably in Wind Reach for the Winter, so you can always look for him yourself if you doubt me."

"Then why you didn't want to answer my question before?" Syveris asked, and Virat smiled. "Oh, you were making fun of me again."

"I'm not making fun of you." her mentor said, but his smile didn't go away. Syveris only glared at him, trying hard not to smile. Somehow, his strange ideas of jokes never seemed to bother her.

Dinner Talk

Postby Syveris on November 21st, 2013, 11:27 pm

"What else?" Virat asked, and Syveris had the impression he was trying to change the subject once again. She didn't mind, though, but she wasn't sure about what he meant with the question.

"Well, I think I made some new friends. And met people." at that, her mentor's face seemed to glow, when he pushed his empty plate away and leaned over the table, to listen to her better. It had been some time since Syveris had seen him show this much interest, and she wondered if she really had been that friendless. Well, it didn't matter. "On my birthday, I met Azira. I recognized her as one of the Yasi I hit when I was younger." Syveris blushed slightly at that.

"You... You didn't fight with her again, did you?"

"Of course not!" Syveris answered, quickly. "We talked, and I apologized. It was fun. Then we had some weird hiking trip on the Unforgiving. She is a huntress, so it was alright. And I think we began to be friends on that day." the Avora mused over it for a while, before continuing. "Then we met again to celebrate her birthday, although it didn't go well, and met with her one last time, when you sent me to the Infirmary." Syveris wasn't really willing to talk about how she was that day, so she just kept talking, not giving a chance to her mentor make a commentary. "We... Well, she called me a friend, then. And I was happy." the Avora smiled to herself. After Virat, Azira was probably the first person that had actually called her a friend, and that she actually called a friend, too.

"Well, I'm glad. It seems like you are finally..." Virat stopped talking, shook his head, and smiled again. "I'm glad. It's about time you made some friends." Syveris knew that this wasn't what her mentor was planning to say, but she wouldn't ask anything. The Avora knew that Virat wouldn't answer, anyway. In a small revenge, though, Syveris wouldn't tell him about the Unforgiving, nor the celebration at the Inclement Weather, two things she knew interested him, as his face changed slightly as she mentioned it. A revenge that would last only until the time Virat asked about it, which wouldn't be anytime soon, but it would certainly come.

"Yes, I'm glad too! She is a wonderful person. Although sometimes she doubts it..." Syveris thought for a while. "Well, I met Marrin, too, when me and Azira went to the Inclement. I think they have something going on, but I can't be sure. I barely got to know him, anyway. And there is Lavira." talking about all these people was really soothing, and it made her even happy. "She is a very nice girl too, I can see it, although we barely interacted..."

Syveris saw that Virat was truly interested. Well, maybe she did need to make some friends. Friends... the word brought another face to her mind, and she smiled again.

"And there was Turrin."

"The half-Myrian." Syveris nodded, noticing that her mentor's voice was slightly tense. However, she thought it was more because of his reaction the first time Syveris had told him about the Endal than because Virat was against the idea of her hanging around a Myrian. She knew that, as long as she was alright, Virat wouldn't have anything against the man.

"Yes, him. I don't really know if we are friends, but we can definitely be! I mean, he was really nice to me on... that day. And on the other times we have met, so..." she trailed off. There were a lot of feelings about Turrin inside her as well, but there was very little she could put into words to tell her mentor. Remembering something, Syveris looked at Virat again. "Can you teach me Common?"

Dinner Talk

Postby Syveris on November 22nd, 2013, 7:55 pm

Syveris had to laugh at the surprised face her mentor made. While she understood his astonishment, such a crude expression was rare on his face.

"I've tried I don't know how many times already. You never wanted to listen. Why the sudden interest, now?"

"Well, Turrin has some difficulties speaking in Nari, and it made me think... What if I meet someone who can't speak Nari at all? I can't speak Common, so talking would be impossible, right? So I thought I would try and learn at least a little more."

"That was what I have been trying to tell you." Virat sighed, before resting his chin on his hand and glaring at her. His eyes seemed to be evaluating, and Syveris didn't like too much when he did that. "Are you sure that is the reason you want to learn?" it was Syveris time to be confused, and she eyed her mentor, not sure what he meant by that. Virat simply sighed again. "Fine. Whatever. You will find out on your own sometime." Syveris eyed him, even more confused. "Let's try again, then. I don't know much Common myself, but I can teach you something. So, there is something you know how to speak?"

"I'm Syveris." she recited, in Common, her face twisting at how weird she sounded. "Can not speak Common." then, she smirked. "Shyke, petch, vagik." her mentor frowned at her, and she couldn't help but giggle. For some reason, Virat hated the swearing, and so, Syveris had learned not to swear around him. And she enjoyed the oportunity of speaking all of them at a time, without worry.

"Yes, the swears you learned very well." Virat grumbled. "But that is all?" there was a hint of surprise in his voice, and Syveris nodded. Once again, Virat sighed. "Look, I'll try to teach you, but this will be the last time. Either you try to seriously learn something, or don't ask me again, understood?" he waited for her to nod, before continuing. "You are clipping your tongue too much, in the actual phrases. You do that with Nari, not with Common." Syveris opened her mouth, but Virat smiled, as if he already knew what she was going to ask. "Just train. Come on, you can do it. You can swear perfectly, after all." the Avora was starting to regret having said the words. "Try to speak like you swear, and you will do it perfectly."

Syveris recited the only two phrases that she knew once again, leaving the swears out, this time trying to keep her tongue from clipping. It was hard. One thing was to say something she had spent a lot of time perfecting the pronunciation, another entirely different was to say something she barely used. By the tenth time she tried, the Avora huffed, annoyed. Virat visibly was trying not to laugh at her.

"That's why I didn't want to learn before! It's so hard and weird!" she grabbed the last piece of meal on her plate and stuffed it in her mouth, chewing and pouting at the same time. It was cold. Virat chuckled at her.

"You don't expect to learn over dinner, do you?" he was actually enjoying everything. Syveris never understood his sense of fun. "Don't worry, keep trying and you will get someday. It's hard work, to learn another language." her mentor smiled. "Try again."

Syveris did, a few more times, with the impression that Virat was asking her to try more for his own fun than for actually teaching her. She glared at him.

"Sorry." he said, his smile saying that he wasn't really sorry. "Try to say 'Wind Reach is where the most beautiful glassworks are made.' and train it as much as you can, so you can speak without looking like you are just deforming the Nari. I'll make you a list of words you can train too." Syveris winced at the phrase, not wanting to repeat it, but she did, nevertheless, while Virat corrected her on one word or another, and then telling her to ask someone who actually spoke Common as a first language to help her with the right pronunciation. Syveris grumbled, already thinking about letting go of the idea of learning the stupid language.

Sighing, Syveris kept repeating the words and phrases Virat threw at her, wondering why the were a language as strange as Common for the rest of the time they remained in the Kitchens.

What an informative little thread. It was interesting to find out the only words that Syveris can pronounce properly in Common! She might also work out the Turrin situation herself sometime too. Look forward to more.
