Dishware for an Endal [Part One]

76th of Fall, 513 AV

After she had woken up, it took the Avora a while before she got out of her bed. During that time, Syveris kept staring at the ceiling, thinking about the events that occurred during the Season. She had heard that the hunters were having each time more difficulty in finding game, and that meant Winter was probably going to be rash. It made her feel guilty, that she wasn't out there hunting for her people. However, she had chosen to become a glassblower, and she had promised herself she would not regret this decision, ever. The Avora cleared her mind, taking deep breaths, waiting for the pessimist thoughts to leave her mind before rolling out of bed.

It was work day, and she was being expected in the Glass Reverie. However, she was still early, and Syveris didn't think she would be late. Taking her time, the Avora moved lazily around her room, gathering the clothes she had thrown over one of the chairs. She got dressed, before she walked to the table she had moved to the far corner of the room, making it stand closer to the wall.

The small crate was resting on top of the table, full of pieces of a soft and warm blanket. Syveris looked inside, smiling at the egg that rested on said blankets. The Avora reached inside, and turned the egg, as carefully as she could. Syveris sighed. It was hard work, to take care of the egg, but she wouldn't give up.

Syveris took her waistband from the table, put it around her waist and walked towards the door. After sending a last glance to the crate, she smiled and left. Sometimes it worried her, to leave the egg unwatched, but she needed to work, and just sit around looking at the egg the whole day would drive her mad. Humming, the Avora made her way to the Glass Reverie, wondering what she would be making.

Dishware for an Endal [Part One]

When Syveris reached the Reverie, she scanned the room, looking for her mentor. She still needed to work with him, but Virat had promised her that she would be able to work by herself in the Winter. The Avora looked forward to it. She enjoyed her mentor's company, but she wanted to be by her own, and more than that, she wanted to move out of apprenticeship, to become truly independent. She spotted the red-haired man on the back of the Reverie, hunched over the worktable, and she smiled. Syveris took her tools and walked to where Virat was.

However, her mentor wasn't working on glass. In fact, his tools weren't even near. Syveris frowned, before placing her own tools on the table and looking at Virat. The man was scribbling on a piece of paper. Before she could make out what he was doing, though, her mentor straightened his back and looked at her, a smile forming in his face. Syveris noted that he looked tired. Maybe the Season was affecting him too, although she knew that Virat wouldn't talk to her about his problems.

"Hello, Syveris." he greeted her, and the Avora could sense the weariness in her mentor's voice. "Early as always." she pouted. This time, Syveris honestly thought that she would get in the Reverie on time, but maybe punctuality wasn't exactly her strength. "If you didn't leave later as well, I would think that you don't like being here."

"I love being here and you know it!" she squealed, indignant. She was just late, but she worked the same bells as anyone else. When Virat chuckled, she noticed she had been teased. "Stop that. It's not funny." the Avora crossed her arms. Virat just shook his head, still smiling. "What are you doing, anyway?" the girl asked, sending a look at the paper. There was a strange oval thing, and Syveris forced her eyes, trying to make sense of it.

"It's a dishware. An Endal just commissioned it." Virat answered, taking the paper and crushing it in his hand. "To tell you the truth, it's the first time I've had to drawn something. You can see I'm not exactly good at it." Syveris snickered, and then tried to stay serious when she received a glare from her mentor. "Actually, what about you make the drawing? It'll be a good training for when you're taking commissions in your stall."

Syveris moaned, and opened her mouth to protest. However, Virat was already shoving on her hand a piece of coal and paper. With a growl, Syveris took the paper and began to draw, not even sure about what she was doing.

"He wants four plates and a bigger dish, curled to the inside." Virat told her, looking at the paper. Syveris growled again, as she scribbled in the paper, harshly. She didn't knew how to draw. In fact, she could barely make a circle, even less a dish. However, she tried to focus, running the coal on the paper.

When she raised the paper, it was Virat's time to snicker. The 'circle' looked like a deformed egg, and the bigger one almost didn't resemble a dish at all. She scowled, and crushed the paper on her hand, much like her mentor had done.

"No, no." Virat took the paper from her hand, smoothing it. "It's fine. It's a nice idea, when you understand that these things are the curved corners." Virat smiled, shoving the paper on a pocket in his bryda. Syveris wondered if he was really going to show it to the Endal who had commissioned the dishware or if he would keep it just to annoy her later.

"Is that really necessary?" she mumbled.

"Syveris... If you wish to open a stall, you'll take orders from a customer, and you will need to know how to present this order, so you will know if it's really what they want." Virat spoke, so serious that Syveris wondered if he had drawn badly at purpose, so she would have to try it. "Anyway, he asked for a blue set. So we will be making colored glass today."

Syveris smiled, forgetting in an instant about her failed attempt at drawing. She had only learned the proper mix to make red glass, and blue would be a fine addition at her knowledge. She would definitely pay close attention at the instructions.

"You can achieve blue by using cobalt." Virat informed, while pointing at a glass vial that rested on the table. Syveris took it, looking at the powder inside. "The more you add, the deeper the blue will be. But do not add too much, either."

"How much is too much?" she asked, unsure. Virat had told her that each compound needed different quantities to color the glass, and she wasn't sure what would be too much for cobalt.

"Half would be enough." Syveris nodded, and turned the contents into the lime-sand inside the crucible, trying to measure the quantity so she would be able to recreate it later. She then took the pot and placed it on top of the iron grates.

"We will wait for three days to make sure all the air is gone." Virat informed. "We will work on the dishware by then."

"Will he pay you? The Endal, I mean." Syveris asked, knowing she had made a mistake by the stern look on her mentor's face. "What? It's just a question, I swear!" it wasn't. She really thought that even the Endal should pay the artisans. It was hard work to do beautiful glass pieces, and the Avora deserved to be recompensed.

"I accepted it for the experience. If you want to do it, you'll accept it for the experience as well." her mentor's voice wasn't friendly anymore, and Syveris hold back her comments. She already knew their opinions diverged greatly on this matter. "You are free to help me or not. You're my apprentice, and I will not have you criticize the way I do my work."

"I'm sorry." she whispered, a little hurt. It was just a question. When Virat waved to her, she tried to forget the matter, focusing on the next task he had for her. The glass would take a few days to melt, and not even if they wanted they would be able to work on it right then.

Clearing her mind, Syveris began to work again.
