The professor said nothing but started leading them out, so Cynnya followed, mouthing a silent 'thank you' to Halin'a. She tilted her chin up proudly and walked in front of the guards with as much grace and poise as she could manage, thankful that they were letting her walk on her own. She noticed, however, that their hands remained on the hilts of their swords and she scoffed silently. She was a small young woman who looked like she could barely hurt a fly in her human form. Sure, she could probably outrun the two guards but her unarmed combat skills were still just basic and she would probably get only a few good hits in before they were able to subdue her. The only hope she would have of actually causing some damage was changing into her ocelot form and clawing their eyes out, but any form of resisting at this point would be tantamount to guilt in this matter.

Apprehension grew in her stomach as they neared the Asylum and she choked back her fear, letting none show on her face. This would be the first time she would be even near the Scholar's Asylum and the stories that came from the place were enough to give her chills. Her eyes widened in surprise at the destruction of the building doors. Her sensitive nose picked up the scent of something burning from inside the building before they had even passed through the doors and she looked over at Halin'a quizically to see if he was just as confused as she. They seriously thought she, a 3 year old Kelvic with no training in Djed whatsoever and nothing but fear for the dreaded asylum, had something to do with this? This was preposterous.

Cynnya held her breath as they passed through the doors, foolishly thinking that she could somehow breathe in the magic that caused many to go mad in these halls. Finally she couldn't hold it any longer and was forced to breathe as they climbed the stairs, silently wishing she was anywhere but here. Her pupils were wide with terror and she kept glancing back at Halin'a to be sure he was still there, some small comfort in this horrid situation.

She watched intently as the professor opened the door with the strange symbols, wondering why he seemed to avoid touching any of the symbols. She fought the urge to spit at him as he ordered them inside, choosing instead to adopt a more mature response of keeping her mouth shut and entering as ordered. He was not the one she needed to convince of her innocence, it seemed, he was just an errand boy for the Ignatius guy.

The door locked ominously behind them and she turned to Halin'a, her eyes wide and full of apology. "Halin'a, I am so sorry, you didn't need to come with me. You need to believe me, I have no idea what is going on. This is my first time even in the Scholar's Asylum and all I know from here are terrible stories of people going mad from misusing Djed," she said quickly, her words practically running into each other in her panic and trying to convince Halin'a that she was innocent. "I've never practiced Djed, my roommate does but she's not very good at it and I could certainly never damage those doors we passed through." She searched his face for any sign that he either did or didn't believe her.

Tears pushed themselves into her vision and she brushed them away angrily; she would not show signs of weakness, not now.

A Second Meeting[Halin'a; Cynnya]

Postby Halin'a on December 17th, 2013, 5:51 pm

The Ethaefal barely managed to keep his eyes from dropping out of his head when he spotted the damage done to the Asylum-- He was willing to bet that the Asylum, due to the nature of those it housed, would have wards, protections; so what could be strong enough to blast the heavy doors from their hinges and leave scorch marks along the walls?

Halin'a's eyes narrowed as he noticed the leader's avoidance of the symbols-- more wards, perhaps? Halin'a had next to no knowledge of magic, but he was willing to bet his last gold miza that those symbols had something to do with restraint.

The Ethaefal simply glared at the man's back as he left after giving his warning; surely, surely, the man wasn't so stupid as to believe that someone less than an expert in any form of magic was capable of the destruction he'd just seen? Halin'a dropped the glare immediately when Cynnya started speaking-- freaking out, really. "Hey, hey," he said soothingly, moving to take her shoulders in his hands and tugging her against his chest. "I believe you. You're strong, but something tells me you're not strong enough to destroy as much as was destroyed, even if this wasn't your first time here." He carefully petted down her back, a little unsure of what would actually comfort the Kelvic, but going with his instinct, which told him tacility would be his best bet. "I believe you," he repeated, wanting to make that perfectly clear, wanting to reassure the young girl. "I believe you."

Cynnya did not fail to notice Halin'a's own surprise at the destruction and smell of burning that they witnessed before being locked in this room. Neither of them were comfortable with the situation but at least he wasn't the one being accused of...whatever that was. He had to believe her.

She stiffened as he pulled her into an embrace as she was not used to such close contact, but she didn't push away. It was comforting in a way and she didn't entirely object to the warmth he provided, although after about a minute she was sure she wouldn't be able to tolerate it anymore. Typical cat behavior. She sighed in relief as he said that he believed her; at least she had someone on her side. His touch was soothing for a few moments, but soon she grew restless and squirmed out of his grasp, not unlike her ocelot form would. "Thank you...at least you do. Now I have to convince whoever Professor Ignatius is that I've never been here before," she said more calmly and slowly. She glanced over at the door as if expecting it to burst open at any moment with some raving mage casting spells everywhere.

Cynnya pulled out one of the chairs and sat down, her panic replaced by thoughtfulness. "What could have done something like that? I swear, if this is my roommate's fault I will kill her," she grumbled thoughtfully, almost to herself but partly to Halin'a. She looked up at him, thinking aloud. "Do you think someone who was locked up here escaped?"

A Second Meeting[Halin'a; Cynnya]

Postby Halin'a on December 17th, 2013, 6:55 pm

Halin'a didn't resist when Cynnya moved back, understanding that the young Kelvic was stressed, and-- given her Kelvic form of an ocelot-- would not be welcoming of prolonged physical contact; none of the other cats Halin'a had ever encountered were. The Ethaefal nodded, eyes soft, when she thanked him. "You're a good person," he said simply.

Halin'a chuckled softly when Cynnya grumbled about her roommate, but then he moved to study the wards circling the room and door. He didn't touch any of them-- if the man hadn't, then it most definitely would not be wise for him to do so either. "Possibly, but unlikely," he concluded. "See how this room isn't showing any signs of the damage we saw outside? Whatever-- or whoever-- got out was fire-based, I'm wiling to bet. But there's no scorch marks inside this room, or around the door. I don't think that they would have focused just on repairing one room instead of the doors-- more risk of escaped patients via that route, I would think." Halin'a tilted his head to study one symbol in particular, one that looked like a mass of vaguely-familiar lines. He let out a frustrated huff after a few heartbeats. "Rhaitchach suran tela caiyuma," he spat, turning to continue pacing the room.

Something was definitely wrong here-- the question was, why was Cynnya being dragged into whatever it was?

OOCCreative license was taken with Halin'a's curses. ^.^ Basically he's cursing whoever placed the symbols.

A Second Meeting[Halin'a; Cynnya]

One bell would pass, then two before finally the sound of two pairs of foot steps would close in on the outside of the door. The lock would be undone and then the door would swing wide for two robed figures to sweep inside. One was a tall aging man with a severe expression seemingly permanently etched onto his face, the red trimming on his blue robes marking him as a department head. His companion was a young red haired woman, a calm smile on her face and it seemed as though the situation here hadn't shaken her up in the slightest. She wore the robes of a professor, seemingly out of place given her youth.

The woman locked the door behind them, showing the same care in not touching the Glyphs on the door as the Professor had. The old man locked eyes upon Cynnya immediately, his steely grey orbs seeming to search deep into her character as he looked at her. His gazed shifted to Halin'a, whom received a slightly raised eyebrow but little else.

"Be seated." He commanded simply, gesturing to the chairs across from him.

The man sat himself down in a chair opposite them, his hands steepled in front of him as he simply stared at Cynnya. His grey eyes gained a somewhat glazed quality about them and the girl would feel slightly uncomfortable for it, as though he were looking into her very soul. The woman seated herself beside him, regarding Halin'a rather than the kelvic giving him a slightly apologetic smile.

For about two chimes the man simple stared at the student in silence, before his eyes returned to their normal lucid quality. He blinked three times in rapid succession before letting out a sigh, giving a slight look to the woman at his side. He gave an almost imperceptible shake of his head before turning his attention to Cynnya.

"I take it you are Cynnya, though I wasn't expecting company with you. I am Professor Stonemiller, Head of the College of Djed, and the woman beside me is Bethany Loris, the woman responsible for keeping the Asylum running smoothly. I trust you noted the damage on your way in. So tell me something, do you know what caused it?" He asked simply, blinking as his eyes regained that strange glazed quality about them.

Bethany shifted in her seat slightly, crossing her right leg over her left her gaze no where close to Cynnya. Rather her green orbs were focused intently on Halin'a, seeming to bear an almost unnaturally strong quality about them. A strange feeling would wash over him, warm and originating deep in his chest. He would feel drawn to the red haired woman, intrigued even. It lasted for no more than a few ticks before vanishing into his subconscious.

A Second Meeting[Halin'a; Cynnya]

Cynnya waited impatiently, her mind reeling with what could happen as a result of this interrogation. She could get kicked out of school, lose her job, or even end up in the asylum working off whatever damages had happened even though she had nothing to do with them. Two bells passed before her acute hearing picked up the sounds of two persons approaching the door and the door swung open. She was not sure whether she should stand as a sign of respect or if that would be seen as threatening, so she remained seated, sitting up tall in her chair. Well, tall for her.

The stern looking professor who entered with the calmer looking woman locked eyes with her immediately and she did not flinch away. She was no coward and as scared as she was, she would face him confidently with the knowledge that whatever he was on about she was not involved. His gaze was as piercing as her own yet she remained steadfast and returned his stare unblinkingly, her expression neutral. It was somewhat of a relief when he looked over at Halin'a and asked him to sit down, but almost immediately the professor seated himself and resumed staring her down again. If this was some kind of test of her strength and resolve, she was not going to fail it, so she stiffened her spine and stared right back. This stare was more prolonged than the first and she had to blink several times, but as uncomfortable as she felt she did not look away or even move. It felt like he could see everything about her that she didn't even know herself, which she had to convince herself was a good thing because then he could know she was completely innocent.

Cynnya did not miss the slight shake of his head to the other woman, but she had no clue what it meant. When he finally spoke, she almost jumped in her seat, having been certain he was just going to use Djed tricks on her mind in order to interrogate her. Foul mages. As far as she was concerned, one couldn't trust mages as far as one could throw them.

She kept her expression neutral and her voice insistent as she replied to his question. "Yes, my name is Cynnya and I am a student at the University studying History and Literature. However, I have no idea what could have caused the damage that we saw. I have never seen anything like it and I doubt I will again. I'm assuming it has something to do with Djed," she said, the terror and panic from earlier replaced by confidence. Why were his eyes glazing over? Was he bored with this routine interrogation? Cynnya cleared her throat slightly, glancing over at Bethany who was focusing her attention on Halin'a. He didn't even have to be here, what was the petching mage going to do to him?

"I've only ever seen my roommate use Djed and nothing she can do would ever amount to that kind of damage, so I am at a loss as to why I am here," she continued matter-of-factly, every word carefully thought out and spoken.

Halin'a opted for the somewhat-safer option of doing as he was bid when the man and woman-Professor Ignatius and Miss Louis, he presumed- entered. He sat down slowly, looking from one to the other, hoping for some sort of sign as to what was going on: he was certain something beyond a simple sabotage was going on here, but he didn't want to jeopardize anything for Cynnya.

When the woman looked at him a certain way, Halin'a found himself thinking she was fairly attractive, but it wasn't just physically-- there was something--

What was he thinking, again?

Shaking his head slightly to clear it, the Ethaefal returned his focus to Cynnya and the professor, listening to the Kelvic's reply and had to let the side of his mouth quirk up slightly at the steady reply. He had to give her credit; she was doing very well, in his opinion.

A Second Meeting[Halin'a; Cynnya]

Professor Stonemiller didn't seem surprised by her denial of knowing what happened, he rose from his chair and walked towards a far wall. He stared at if for a while, his back to those at the table with not a sign of what exactly he was thinking. The woman finally turned her gaze towards Cynnya, a flicker of what looked like recognition going of in her eyes. Her green eyes narrowed by a minute fraction, as though something occurred to her.

"That's interesting you should say that, Cynnya. Because I have reports from several witnesses here who recognized you by name, some by just description but the description was exact, that placed you here. Miss Loris, I believe you have the exacts." The Professor stated, still keeping his back turned.

Bethany inclined her head towards him and gave Cynnya a smile that under normal circumstances might have been considered charming, at the moment it looked downright predatory. A flicker of emotion, fear prominently, would pass through the Kelvic at the smile. It would rise from the depths of her mind and set the hairs on her neck on edge, a creeping fear of something dreadful being on the way.

"Indeed I do. The books have you recorded as entering the Asylum about four bells ago, right before this started. According to the records you requested to see one Xailus Wakefield, former Reimancy Professor and father of Ella Wakefield your roommate a believe? In any event witnesses saw you enter the patients room with a staff member, only for you to leave three chimes later alone. Two chimes after that Xailus escaped his room, wounding a number of people as he attempted to escape." The woman said, her tone still managing to sound friendly as she recounted all of this.

"The staff member who escorted you was found in Xailus' room, a number of deliberate and surgical wounds across his body. A number of his arteries were severed, likely he bled out in less than a chime. When the patient was restrained we found a key on his body, the same key that allows staff members to safely come and go through the doors. Witness' identified you by name on two counts and description on all six." She stated, examining the nails of her right hand.

Professor Stonemiller swung around and strode towards the kelvic, his grey eyes flashing in controlled fury as he towered over her. His eyes still possessed that odd glazed quality and they were fully focused on her and only her. Bethany returned her attention to Halin'a, green eyes watching him very carefully.

"Now, we have six people, six very honest people that identified you, student Cynnya as not only visiting Xailus but of exiting that room alone where the staff member was found dead. We also have records of your visitation, so do not lie to me and tell me you know nothing of what happened here. You are going to tell me why you did this, and you are going to tell me right now." The professor said slowly, his tone terse.

A Second Meeting[Halin'a; Cynnya]

Cynnya's gaze followed the man as he strode away, breaking his strange staring match with her. What he said next caused her to raise her eyebrows in surprise as he said he had witnesses who named her. Her mouth gaped open in complete shock and she could not have feigned the fear and trepidation that passed over her face as Miss Loris smiled at her. This had to be some work of magic, some trick that...her thought was cut short as the woman proceeded to describe the evidence they had against her.

Four bells ago? Four bells? Where was she four bells ago? Every fiber in her being knew she had certainly not been here at the Asylum, but as the woman continued she couldn't exactly remember where she had been. Her cheeks went pale as she realized that not only was she being accused of just visiting a patient here but murder. Her eyes met the professor's once again as he strode forcefully towards her, trying to digest everything and remain calm at once but she was feeling like a cornered animal. She shrunk back in her chair and growled low in her throat, a warning sign she would have normally used in her ocelot form.

Cynnya didn't answer him right away as her growl faded, her mind racing and her eyes darting over to Halin'a. There was no way he could still believe her innocence after this and who would? She was even starting to believe she had something to do with this, after all they had records...

Suddenly, she sat up straight again and took a deep breath. "Let me get this straight, if I may," she said quietly, her voice shaking a little but still steady considering the onslaught she had just received. "You are accusing me of not only freeing a dangerous patient from the asylum but also murder, correct?" Cynnya paused for an answer and then continued, her voice growing stronger. "If I was here four bells ago, and I were to do such a thing, why would I leave a record of my visit that would lead you straight to me? I would like to see this record, if I may. Secondly, you say there were surgical wounds on the staff member's body. I have studied Reading, Literature and History at the University and I have no skill related to the skills of a surgeon. I am a three year old unbonded Kelvic and I have had to work hard in order to catch up in my studies. How would I have had the time and the focus to study the skills of a surgeon when all that goes through my mind every day is finding my bondmate?"

Cynnya looked at both Miss Loris and Professor Stonemiller with a stern expression on her face. "This sounds like a carefully planned setup in order to frame me for a crime someone else committed. Here is what I think happened, and I can prove it if I can see the sign in on the records book you say you have: someone impersonated me in order to get the focus of your investigation off of them long enough for the damage to be done and for that person to get away. You may not believe me but I will say it again: I have no idea what went on here today or why. Four bells ago I was awaking in my room because I am mostly nocturnal and I headed to the library to scribe for the librarians. One of them may have seen me working and would be willing to vouch for me."

A Second Meeting[Halin'a; Cynnya]

Postby Halin'a on December 18th, 2013, 1:45 pm

Halin'a started when the Professor mentioned witnesses; that would complicate things quite a bit. The Ethaefal still firmly believed that the Kelvic was innocent, but he had to wonder just who was so desperate to frame her; had she gotten on someone's bad side, or was she simply a convenient scapegoat, due to her roommate being the daughter of the would-be escapee?

Halin'a could see that the revelation had thrown Cynnya for a loop as well; she was visibly shaken. However, she pulled herself together, and Halin'a listened intently to her explanation, his gaze fixed onto the Professor and his lackey-- for what other reason would the woman be here? Sure, the Ethaefal knew that the woman ran the Asylum, so she would be involved, but surely she would be taking a more active role if she wasn't here for some other purpose? Frowning slightly, Halin'a realized that didn't quite make sense... Well, whatever; he still didn't trust her.
