Gender: Female
Age: 19
Birthday: 23, Fall, 484 AV.
Birthplace: Zeltiva
Appearance: Fully grown at just touching 5"3, Tanis is quite small for her age, and finds it a pain when reaching for high-up vials of deadly poisons. She takes after her mother in appearance, both having the same dark colouring and slim figures. Tanis, like many people who work with dangerous chemicals all day, has several burn marks on her hands, tiny faded-white scars she can barely remember getting. Her back is somewhat similar, with larger, older burn marks courtesy of her mother's tests. Tanis prefers dark colours and have her long curly hair loose, although she ties it back when she works to avoid getting poisonous chemicals on it. When going out, Tanis wears thick, heavy clothes - a woolly coat and boots - but goes barefoot in nothing but a top and loose trousers when at home.
Character ConceptTanis is a poisoner, and she is well aware that almost all the 'remedies' she sells will be, at some point, used to harm or kill somebody. She doesn't particularly care. Her empathy and compassion, if she ever had them, were cut off at an early age by her mother, who taught her that such things were simply "childish naivety" and other people would use them to get to her. In the same way, she was taught that family always came first, crimes were only illegal if you got caught and lying and cheating were only wrong if done by someone else.
This has given Tanis very little respect for anyone other than her mother, and so she tends to be very rude - even to customers - and sarcastic, especially when she's just got out of bed. She has little sympathy to moaners, even if they have good reason to be upset.
Character HistoryTanis' parents met two years before she was born, when her father - a hunter by the name of Trian was badly injured out hunting, and managed to stumble upon a wandering healer (and poisoner, although he didn't know that then), Arline Silver. After tending to the man's wounds, the two got talking and hit it off. She was returning to her home and shop in Zeltiva, and he offered to accompany her. By the time they arrived there, Trian had changed his mind completely about leaving. One year and several months later, more specifically the moment Arline announced her pregnancy, he changed his mind and departed, abandoning his pregnant wife in the middle of the night.
This left Arline with the job of managing her shop and daughter alone. Tanis grew up alternating between lessons from her mother and errands from her mother, even at a young age she'd be out in the forest, cheerily digging for herbs, mud-smudged fingers comparing her findings to the ones specified in the book. Occasionally, more commonly the older she got, Tanis would be given 'tests' of certain poisons to eat, sometimes this would be to test Tanis' skills, to choose which one of various herbs wasn't dangerous, but othertimes it was simply because her mother wanted to see for herself the affects of various poisons, not content to simply accept what the book said - it had been wrong before, requiring Arline to heavily recompense the customer in question.
As she got older, so did her mother, and soon Arline was no longer able to manage the shop herself. At seventeen, Tanis took over the business, looking after her mother as best she could.

Heirloom: A scuffed journal. It's passed down through her mother's family, is battered and earmarked with stained pages. The writing has been scribbled, crossed out, doodled over, smudged with ink, plant oils and what looks quite a lot like blood. It contains a disjointed collection of herbs, complete with often badly-drawn pictures, 'witty' comments in the margin and detailed descriptions of the herbs' properties, locations and uses. For the most part, the herbs are ones near Zeltiva, and the few that are not are either very common or vaguely described and noted to be not from first hand experience.
