Rose Soulum

Sitting at a desk under candlelight, Rose held a small wooded block in his hand and a sharp chisel in the other. Turning the small block of wood, Rose created a mental image of what he wanted the finish product to look like. Rose changed his attention from the wood to his desk that had various materials on top of it. There were bit of wood, sheets of material and leather, and also a few round polished stones and other odds and ends. These were all the components he needed to create a shell for his creation. Rose placed the end of his chisel against the wood, slanting against the grooves and slowly slid the sharp chisel along the surface. As the chisel moved, the wooden shaving grew and curled above the blade before detaching and dropping on the table. Rose looked at the single carving he had made, checking if the chisel is sharp enough to work with. Everything seemed okay, so he continued carving the wood. Each slide of the Chisel formed the shape of the wooded torso. Carving away, rose took about ten chimes to carve out a rough shape for the doll’s torso. After a short inspection, Rose began carving away at another block of wood, making another torso. Rose wasn’t going to make just one doll, but two. Once both torsos were complete, Rose changed the chisel he had to one that was slightly thinner with a slightly broader head. The task for the chisel was to smoothen out some of the groves left from the previous chisel. Just like before, Rose slid the chisel, peeling the wood away until the torso was nice and somewhat smooth. Rose repeated this technique with the other blocks of wood, creating various limbs of the body. In the end, Rose had two torsos, two lower bodies, two sets of part that make up arms, two sets of parts that make up legs and a head with no facial features.
With all the components needed to make a simple ball-joint doll finished, Rose needed to make the vitally part of the doll, the ball-joints to connect it all together. Rose began with the arms. He picked up the two bits that make up one and examined them, contemplating how he would go about carving them to create the joint. The purpose of the ball join is not only to connect the limbs together, but also create movement and restrictions. Each doll Rose makes is a physical record and a step close to making the perfect doll. After mapping out how he’s going to carve the joint, rose began whittling away at the ends of the forearms, rounding the ends. Rose repeated this on the other parts of the doll that requires a balled end. When Rose completed carving the ball part of the joints, he moved on to create the socket of the joint. The socket was a bit challenging to create. Using the “v-tool”, Rose marked out a small groove to use the spoon tool to carve out a socket. Again, Rose repeated this on the other bits that require a socket.
Before rose can put together the doll, he needs to add details to the face. Each face Rose makes is unique and differentiates the dolls from each other, no matter how similar they look. Not only that, the doll’s head is the main sensory component, it’ll speak, see and hear from this component. Picking up one other the doll’s head, Rose picked up a thin headed chisel and began slowing peeling away the wood. Rose starts the face by marking out the eyes, mouth and ears, these parts are the most important part of the face. Starting with the eyes, Rose carved out little slits to begin the next step, gouging out where the eye is going to be placed. The polished Rose had are going to serve at the doll’s eyeballs, the stones are white in colour with an iris made with ink. After Rose had finished scooping out the socket for the eye to rest in, he placed the stone over the eye hole and gentle applied pressure. When enough pressure was applied, the eye popped in. Rose began moving the eye that was in the doll’s head with his finger. However, there was a bit more resistance than he expected. Rose fixed this by continually moving the eye in a circular motion to slightly wear the socket. When the desirable about of resistance was met, rose did the same thing to the other eye, and eventually the other doll’s head. Next up, the ears. In order for Rose's dolls to hear, they needed some form of eardrum to pick up sound, that's when the leather comes in. Using a knife, Rose cuts two out an ear shaped piece of leather. Now all Rose needed to do it attach it to the head. Picking up a small nail from the table, rose placed the bit of leather on the side of the head and the nail on top of the leather. With a small about of pressure, Rose slightly pierced the Leather and created a divot where the nail is going to be resting. Placing the head on the table, with his fingers holding the nail in place, Rose reached from a small hammer from his tool kit and began calculating his hits. At first Rose gently tapped the nail, allowing the nail to settle into the wood, then rose began hitting the head of the nail, gradually applying more force. After a few hits, the nail was in and the ear was set in place. Rose repeated this process on the other side and attached ears on the other head.
The last vital part of Rose's Doll's Face was the mouth. The mouth is a useful component in terms of maintenance and orders. With the ability to speak, Rose's dolls could tell Rose's their current status and if they needed some form of repair. Not only that, the can also tell Rose information about the task they've been assigned. However, it was quite trick making a moveable mouth and was far beyond rose's skill. So in order to make the doll speak, Rose needed to create a tongue where the speech of the doll will come out. Rose achieved this by cutting a small portion of leather in the shape of a tongue and placed it to the side for a moment. The tongue required a mouth to sit in place. Using the 'V-tool', Rose carved out a small slit when the tongue will soon be inserted. After the slit was made, Rose used a flat chisel and bean moving it back and forth motion the deepening the slit. Once deep enough, Rose inserted the tongue. To slit was large enough for the tongue to enter and thin enough for the tongue to stay in place. With all of the vital parts in place, Rose can sculpt the head. The first head Rose made represented a boy and the second one represented a girl. Once the heads were complete all done, Rose needed to do is assemble them by placing the balls in their sockets.
