Hunger for Food, Thirst for Knowledge [Finished]

Day 34, Summer 510.

It was just another normal day for Felicia Skye. She woke up at dawn-break in her cavern, located on the far outskirts of Sultros, on the side of a well hidden knoll. The cave was expertly covered by nettle bushes Felicia had planted herself, earlier during her stay at the cave, which amounted to a couple of years. The cave was a small dwelling, just consisting of a single room-like clearing. A set of weathered magical books lay on a natural ledge and the old dust covered furniture lied around. Yet to Felicia, it defined a cosy home. Felicia got up and pulled up her hood to conceal her facial features. She intended to go shopping from a traveling merchant's encampment she had spotted the day before. Her supplies weren't running low but she was curious for what she might find.

The walk to the encampment wasn't a long one, but the going was tough as the cavern was nowhere close to any decent road, and the terrain was rough and densely vegetated.

After quite some time trekking among boulders and thorny weeds, Felicia arrived at the small clearing which contained about five tents. The humans residing in theme stared at her and regarded her cautiously, she sighed as she decided to quicken her pace. Although she did rather enjoy seeing what the stalls at the encampment had to offer, she desperately wanted to get this over with and head back out of the smelly as soon as possible. She headed directly to the lead merchant and started browsing the wares up for sale very carefully. She didn't want any trouble, since she had further plans for that evening. So she had to really consider coughing up some Mizas for whatever gleam caught her watchful eyes. The hours spent shopping sailed by smoothly. Felicia strolled among the junk for sale, inspecting and roughly appraising the value of this and that. She was wondering whether she'd be able to find something about magic, A wizard's journal or a guide would've been fantastic. Sadly, she didn't manage to spot anything among the junk of worthless books the old wooden crates had to offer. After all, these were suspicious folk and most magical contents and records were burned or hidden from the curious eyes of people such as herself.

During her stay at the encampment, which took Felicia until noon, she bought a preserving kit and three small animal snares; just about as many items as she could fit in her back-pack. She was satisfied on the whole. In belief that the items she bought would make her life easier, Luckily, the vendor she had got the equipment from had taking his time to explain the basics of trapping animals, for example where would be a vantage point to set a trap and the preservation of food and how it functions. It was what the day shopping was about, commodities and making her survival in the wild more efficient and comfortable. She hated hunting rabbits and critters with her Morphing and Reimancy magic. She was risking being discovered by someone or setting the landscape on a raging fire. And to add insult to injury, hunting in-person was energy and time consuming to say the least.

As she prepared to head back to her cave, Felicia did indeed spot a trunk filled with old dusty books. Again, several books were either mundane or irrelevant. But she did manage ta find a small battered leather-bound journal. At first she thought it was about art. But she quickly realized that it contained information about 'the old language' and eerie designs which the author called 'glyphs'. She didn't know if this indeed was a magician's journal. Yet the opportunity was too rare to get by. The book was priced at 50 Gold Rimmed Mizas. Which was a steal actually. But Felicia couldn't help it. She had to have the book, whatever the price. The promise of learning a new variant of magic was too enticing.

After stuffing the treasured book carefully in her bag, she grinned under the darkness of her furry hood. Clearly very satisfied, the day shopping had gone by pretty well. Even better than she thought it would go, in fact. The fact that she spent most of her assets didn't bother her that much. As long as she could have the possibility to learn more magic and thus become more powerful. She had spent seventy Gold Rimmed Mizas, but according to Felicia- That shopping-trip had yielded her a potential treasure. She waved a quick good-bye to the merchants and readied herself for the tough walk back to her awaiting cave.

Hunger for Food, Thirst for Knowledge (Solo)

Felicia flung the leather back-pack onto the straw-mattress she slept on and took out the book, carefully storing it on the ledge, along with her other books about Morphism and Reimancy.

She took out the three iron animal snares she had bought from the Merchant's encampment and went off with them once more, into the lush wild. The exploration didn't take her much. She set a trap by a cranberry bush (Of which she foraged a pocketful of crimson sweet berries.), another trap next to a spring- where according to the Merchant the rabbits and animals would go to drink, and the last snare- nearby a well-dug earthen burrow, which still looked fresh and inhabited enough. She didn't know if the traps would succeed at capturing the unsuspecting wild animals, yet... she hoped they would. She was running short on Mizas and probably couldn't afford buying the food constantly. She didn't have a real source of income, anyway.

Felicia promptly returned to her cavern, and lied down on the rough mattress, reading the book she had bought, titled "Ink and Runes". A title which needless to say could be barely made out due to wear-and-tear of the old book. The title was worn off at several places. Abrasion at it's best. Felicia started leafing through the dusty book, taking in the complex symbols and explanations drawn upon it. The pages had several finger prints plastered to them, the book had been clearly very thoroughly thumbed, several times. This led way for Felicia to suspect that what she was about to read was common knowledge. The books which contained the secrets of an art were generally hidden away from common sight and grasp. Still, magic was magic and since this was a new type she never heard about, she had to start somewhere.

The book explained an art called 'Glyphing' which involved modifying and customizing eariier known types of magic through the instruction of runes. Felicia wanted to try this out for herself, but realized she had no ink. Sighing, she took out the cranberries she had foraged earlier and mashed them to a paste on the stony floor. She willed her finger turn to a twig, through morphism and it responded quickly, fogging up for a moment then elongating and becoming harder and tougher as the Djed within her shaped and carved it into the desired shape. She dipped her twig-finger into the cranberry paste and copied the glyph on the book labelled- 'Recollecting your Djed and focusing in a particular body part' to her other palm. The work was tough and took Felicia quite a number of bells, especially since she wasn't really good at art. By the time she was done the sun was about to make contact with the horizon, then set. Plunging the world into darkness. Felicia bit her lower lip and started adding the final touches to her glyph.

As soon as the glyph was finished, she was still pumping Djed to her twig shaped finger, so as to keep it in shape. She felt a pull on her Djed, to her other arm, as if a mysterious force was guzzling down her Djed thirstily, not intending to relent or pause. The twig she used to draw grew hazy and blurry, slowly returning to a fleshy finger. The glyph wouldn't let her send Djed to the finger!

Suddenly, the five fingers at the side where the glyph was drawn all became twigs. Felicia widened her eyes in amazement and wiped the glyph away with her free hand then willed them to turn back to ordinary fingers. Felicia didn't really know how Glyphing worked yet. But, she realized that it was a complicated yet exciting and broad area of magic. An area that led to countless possibilities when combined with other arts.

Felicia gulped heavily, starting to calm down from the panic of her first attempt at glyphing. She closed her eyes and tried as hard as she dared to sleep, but after thirty chimes, she realized that was impossible. Glyphing had surprised her way too much and unfortunately it was too dark to read. Felicia sighed and chewed on her lower lip, waiting desperately for the sun to rise again so that she could resume reading about Glyphs.

This Thread Is Invalid.

Additional Note: You cannot have a random set of ‘magical books’ as a starting family heirloom. You can have a singularly clearly defined ‘book’ with a set topic. Please make this correction as it allows your PC too much access to information they’d normally have to go to a city library for.

PC’s aren’t allowed to ‘invent’ locations like the Rastor Market which wouldn’t exist in the confines of the outskirts of Sultros.. and if it is indeed a Sultros location then the Izur wouldn’t let a Zith in. They won’t even let humans into their city most of the time.

You can’t find a magicians journal in a trunk of old books. Sorry. That’s not fair game play under the rules. This whole thread is invalid because you have a very unclear understanding of how we play Mizahar. To get a ‘reward’ like a chest of books, you need to work with a Storyteller.

I suggest you rewrite and place the thread within the confines of the rules. You don't get to create locations, invent objects, and you certainly don't have a magical library inherited from family.
