11th Day of Winter

Watching the Hawk Una tilted her head anxiously. It was the first time she had stood here without Sizzle at her side and the lack of company felt unnerving. That day in the Savant Lodge had changed everything for Sizzle. She remembered setting out with the wilderness guide. Veek was getting better and she needed to find a safe place far from harm to return him when the time came.

Standing and dusting off her legs and thighs Una quickly changed into the heavier gear that had been lent to her by Lusina and opened the gate. It was her first time doing it so she moved forward with the towel very cautiously. Veek eyed her with distrust, wings coming out he began to back away hissing. Una paused. The opening was all he needed. Almost as large as herself the force of him knocking against her took her breath away.

Stumbling backwards and falling on her butt she watched in horror as he threw himself around the cage jostling his wing in an attempt to fly. "Oh No! Stop! Please!" Una begged and lunged forward trying to catch him in her towel. Rolling across the floor with half hi body encased he turned on her beak drawn.

Lashing out she brought her gloved hands in front of her face and pulled the blanket tight to herself. As he got closer she reached out swiftly and bundled him up. She could feel his beak running over her cheek cutting it open and pecking at her arms. She felt the welts and cuts rising even through the thick material. "Gotcha!" She yelped trying to get his head away. Despite her gratification she couldn't hep but say the words with a sense of doom. "What if you have broken yourself all over again?" She muttered as she moved him to the usual table.

11th Day of Winter

Removing the glass container Lusina had left on the shelf for her she struggled to hold the bird to her in one hand and pour the other onto a nearby rag. Jolting her with his shifting she watched as half the bottle tipped over onto the rag. The fumes were thick and dizzying. Quickly plugging the bottle and replacing it she gently hovered the rag in front of the birds beak, terrified of scalding is nose with the scent. Charoda scent wasn't strong but nonetheless her own watered even from afar.

Feeling him weaken in her arms she quickly tossed the rag into the water hoping he smell would dissipate. Leaning onto the table to keep herself steady she felt the bird go completely limp in her arms. Groaning she eased him into a more comfortable position. Lusina had warned her about this, it would take all day for the bird to awaken and even then they wouldn't be able to gauge if his clumsiness was because of his wing or the chloroform.

Easing the towel off and laying him damaged wing up Una began picking away at the bandages on the birds chest and legs. Pulling gently on the one bandage all she managed to do was lift the edges up. The sap clung to the feathers firmly. Adjusting her grip Una pressed one hand against the bird and yanked a little harder and longer. Still to no avail.

Closing her eyes she pulled back on the bandage as hard as she could and felt her stomach heave at the sound. The bandage pulled off with a sharp ripping noise and every feather plucked made a soft popping in the background. Blood oozed from the chest where the feathers had been.

Una stumbled around nauseous from the sight of blood and struggling to find the flour. Grabbing a fist full she doused the birds wound in a heavy layering. Lusina had sprinkled some on when she had pulled out feathers several days earlier reminding Una.

"Remember when he first came in? We had to stop the bleeding because birds can't clot? Well flour is a great cheap way to do that." Una was sure Lusina hadn't meant she should use so much but the panic had made her act rashly. She reasoned at least.

Closing her eyes she ripped off the leg one as well feeling her stomach heave again, threatening to make her puke. Grabbing a smaller handful of flour she spread it over the leg as well.

11th Day of Winter

Feeling nauseous Una leaned over the bath tub splashing herself with water. The cold slap settled her stomach and she crept over to the bird once again. Leaning over she took out the blue lined container and two bandages. Removing the flattened stick she gently smeared a layer of adhesive along the edges of the bandage.

By now she was grinning. This wasn't so bad. Leaning over to position it perfectly she gently pressed down. Leaning back she smiled at her handiwork. The edges of her smile fell with the bandage. The heavy layer of flour had stuck to it, stopping it from sticking to the bird.

"Shyke..." Una murmured to herself. Leaning back over the bath tub she retrieved the rag and began wiping away the flour. As soon as the water touched the flour it began to clump and expand. Groaning Una stormed back and forth between the bathtub and the bird rinsing out the rag and returning to clean up the mess.

"It's a good thing your feathers are white..." Una muttered though the flour had given his wings a fluffy cloud-like appearance...like cauliflower...Una compared. This time the adhesive stuff and she was able to repeat the process with the next bandage more efficiently.

Rising from her hunched position she carried the bird back into the cage gently settling him on the floor with a new blanket wrapped around him. The choloroform sometimes gave them chills when they woke up Lusina had said. Una smirked and nodded. For once, she couldn't wait to be out of here.
