Summer 20, 421

Vick found himself within the great library surrounded by different books both filled with words from Sahova and empty books to be filled by him along with quills and bottles of ink. He was on a mission as he knew it was time to step up being a half rank wizard and show himself that he could be called a wizard but before he could do that he first had to understand, learn, and master Cryptography. More so now since he now had someone under him for the time being and he did want to make sure he took steps to keep the years of his work to himself and make sure she could not steal them.

He knew this from years of being within Sahova that this was part of Paramagic, a term of skills that wizards use to have to know about in the past. He knew that Sahova maged knew this well but outside the walls of the island he heard tales that they did not do this and were wild when it came to magic.

Vick wanted to make himself more refine in the art of magic and show the world a higher class wizard if it came down to it. So for now he would focus on Cryptography first by reading the notes of the books and refining the notes in his own words within the spare books before trying out the work.

With quill in hand he slowly started writing down the notes as he slowly read about the art of Cryptography and what the terms meant within the field.

‘Key - This is what allows one to have the answer of the code. This tells the person what
the code is. Such as an idea that all A’s are Z’s. Two keys exist which are a physical key which is called “Keyed” and a word one that is just “Keyless”’

His writing was getting better as he put the words from the books into his own words. His writing at first long ago was sloppy but now he was able to read his letters better as they stood out more to his eye.

‘Shift code this is the easiest code to deal with and make. Right Shift 4 means all the letters are moved to the right four times. So A will become E. Z becomes D and so on. While very simple this code can be hard to crack if one does not know the alphabet.’

‘Transformation code - This is another basic code like the shift code. This can turn letters into other letters such as B becoming J. This can be noted on a paper for keyed code but one could memorize the key. However it can be broken if the message is long enough or the person knows what made it.’

‘Trans-alphabetic code - This is just like the Transformation code but letters become symbols. Glyphing runes are the best choice for this. While it will look harder to people that don’t know it, the Trans-alphabetic code is no harder than the Transformation code.’

‘Multi-letter code - More advanced code in which letters are replaced by group letters. To becomes Al, Vi becomes GF and so on. Much harder to memorize however it is harder to break.’

‘Spaceless code - Harder codes can remove spaces and punctuation. So “I am a cat” becomes “Iamacat” however while short messages are easier to break longer blocks of test can take far longer without the right key.’

‘Allegorical code - Known as “pun codes” it takes words into ideas. Used often in Alchemy a block of text can be riddles that talk about colors. idea and animals with each term having hidden meanings. While it can be broken more often than not a key will be needed.’

‘Escrow code - A keyed code in which the message can only be broken by getting separate key parts’

The quill was placed down at last as Vick looked over his notes. The pages that filled his book were the terms for this new art that he had to know which was why he had to write them down to understand them better.

Now it was time for Vick to start doing more hands on with the craft. The books laid out examples about easy to break shift codes and the answers so with that Vick would use as a reference in case he got lost. This would be make good for his writing as well.

‘My name is Vick.’

‘Shift right 5’

‘Qd tfrj nt anhp’

Even while knowing the key this was hard for him to do. He had to think of each letter location from the letters he made. While it was slow work he was still going to push himself in hopes to understand and master this with time just like he was with Malediction.

‘I live on Sahova as a mage’

‘Shift Left 6’

‘C fcpy ih mubipu ul u guay’

Vick was already getting better at it. With this code he was seeing patterns such as A’s became U’s and I’s became C’s. It was still slow but he was at least learning more of it.

Art. Art was a funny term to the young child of Sahova as Vick drew a circle along a patch of paper. The pressure from his hand was too much as he wanted to make a light trace but it came out a dark smear almost as he did not pay attention to his work as he looked upon the court yard where he was sitting next to a tomb a bit off the main path.

He looked down upon the paper and saw his mistake for what he held within his head was different than what he wanted on the paper. He wanted a light circle, not this dark thick one he made, he also wanted it smaller but the one he made was a large circle. Two mistakes and just starting he thought to himself but he knew mistakes were common with him as he was still learning by himself. He did not have a teacher who helped him but he was use to that for this was sahova.

What he saw in his head, was a simple light circle in the middle of the paper that he would build upon. He made a few simple mistakes but he was not going to let that stop him as he moved above the circle and placed the tip of his pencil down and started again. Within his head he held the idea of drawing an outline of a person. So on paper as his slow hand moved after he thought about it for a bit he traced a curved line moving down and over the circle. However that curve went over the circle and was not meant to as he wanted it to be tiny, with a “chest” over the circle and arms and legs beside it. The way he had it now was just wrong.

A mental sigh was done by the child as he looked into the distance. Art. Art was a funny thing to him as he lived in a world that did not do it. It was around him but no one did it as magic took over. Yet within his magical field he had to know art and do it daily to bring out the best within his world magic. This was holding him back and he had to push forward and get better.

He wanted to throw the paper away but he did not. He put the tip of his tool down along it once again and made a tube shape on both sides of the circle and on the bottom. They were uneven and very hard to see for they were very light along the paper compared to the other marks he had made but he was done.

In his head he wanted to draw a human outline with a circle in the very center. On paper it was a very large dark outline of a circle, a head that covered it that was deformed with tube line things coming out of the circle that were uneven and hard to see. At least he was trying he had to tell himself as he turned the paper over.

Along the back of the paper he pressed the tip of his pencil along the center. His hand moved slow along the paper as his left hand held the paper down. The tip of the pencil pressed down along center, the dark lines filled the center with designs of circles and lines that made into eight points. Up, down, left, right, top right, bottom right, top left and bottom right inside a larger circle.

Glyphing was a simple enough idea. Sigils and runes were used to store magic or help focus onto something. Each wizard had a different style as nothing was formal with in due to how flexible the world magic was.

The basic scroll had three parts. A focus. a barrier and a trigger. Right now Vick was working on the focus where the magic would be stored. Afterwards he would work on the barrier then the trigger.

On the outside of the circle he had made, he made another circle just on the outside roughly half an inch away. Within the middle part of that he drew small V’s within the border along the design.

The focus was done inside his head as he started working on the barrier. The barrier was to keep the magic inside the scroll until it was broke in a sense.

His hand moved once again at a slow pace letting the tip of the pencil drag along the paper. Small symbols started to come to life. The symbols were boxes with a simple line inside that ran from top to bottom and side to side. The box symbols trailed from the top, to bottom and once again to the top lining around the circles. Within the tiny spaces between the blocks he drew a small circle to link them together and slowly he filled the paper with circles with the boxes.

The barrier was now done and at last he would start on the trigger. This was what told the magic to unlock the barrier for the magic to run free. He knew how to use vocal triggers and he would keep doing them to refine them since he was still learning on his own. His scrolls were far from being able to be used with ease and to sell.

A block was made in the upper right corner of the paper. Within that circle was just a V. Under the block was a circle within were words. ‘Vavoid’ and that was just the word to release the barrier and let the magic free in which he would place into the scroll within a bit.

The pencil was put down next to him and he moved the paper a few more feet away from him. His mind was clearing as he looked upon it. He had to focus on one feeling for what he was trying to do and that feeling was emptiness.

Emptiness was such a strange word. It meant so many things to people but to Vick it meant being alone. Being left behind in a world that passed him by long ago. He had no friends or family and deep down that made a pit within his stomach that was a weight that he could never let go of or even start to understand. He knew this as he cleared his mind and spent time upon that feeling as he slowly took it to the surface.
Slowly he let that feeling wrap around his emotions and body as he became one with the emotion of emptiness and being alone. Once that feeling became himself he looked upon the paper. Above it, he felt his djed raise from the depths of his soul.

Within the space above the paper, a flicker formed in the air. Like a spark of light as another spark took place before a tear was formed in the air. Yet it was not a light, it was a dark rift forming into the very air as a portal was formed to the void itself.

The size of the portal was the size of his hand. A slight pull around it took place as the scroll flared to life as it sucked the rift into itself, the runes along the paper flaring to life of colors of the rainbow before fading into the black print that it was.

The scroll was done and he felt tired from his djed use. Nuits never felt tired in the sense of the living with running or sleeping but the feeling being tired was felt on some level when they still used djed and voiding still was taxing even with the small portals.

“Vavoid!” Vick yelled with command as the scroll flared to life once more. The trigger was broken as it unlocked the barrier letting the magic become free once more. The portal that was just sealed came back to life, drawing the scroll into itself but the scroll was not stable as the portal fall upon itself, taking out parts of the earth from under the scroll.

He failed on some level but he was trying to get better. Trying to push himself and one day he would be able to call himself a real wizard.
