Summer 20, 421
Vick found himself within the great library surrounded by different books both filled with words from Sahova and empty books to be filled by him along with quills and bottles of ink. He was on a mission as he knew it was time to step up being a half rank wizard and show himself that he could be called a wizard but before he could do that he first had to understand, learn, and master Cryptography. More so now since he now had someone under him for the time being and he did want to make sure he took steps to keep the years of his work to himself and make sure she could not steal them.
He knew this from years of being within Sahova that this was part of Paramagic, a term of skills that wizards use to have to know about in the past. He knew that Sahova maged knew this well but outside the walls of the island he heard tales that they did not do this and were wild when it came to magic.
Vick wanted to make himself more refine in the art of magic and show the world a higher class wizard if it came down to it. So for now he would focus on Cryptography first by reading the notes of the books and refining the notes in his own words within the spare books before trying out the work.
With quill in hand he slowly started writing down the notes as he slowly read about the art of Cryptography and what the terms meant within the field.
‘Key - This is what allows one to have the answer of the code. This tells the person what
the code is. Such as an idea that all A’s are Z’s. Two keys exist which are a physical key which is called “Keyed” and a word one that is just “Keyless”’
His writing was getting better as he put the words from the books into his own words. His writing at first long ago was sloppy but now he was able to read his letters better as they stood out more to his eye.
‘Shift code this is the easiest code to deal with and make. Right Shift 4 means all the letters are moved to the right four times. So A will become E. Z becomes D and so on. While very simple this code can be hard to crack if one does not know the alphabet.’
‘Transformation code - This is another basic code like the shift code. This can turn letters into other letters such as B becoming J. This can be noted on a paper for keyed code but one could memorize the key. However it can be broken if the message is long enough or the person knows what made it.’
‘Trans-alphabetic code - This is just like the Transformation code but letters become symbols. Glyphing runes are the best choice for this. While it will look harder to people that don’t know it, the Trans-alphabetic code is no harder than the Transformation code.’
‘Multi-letter code - More advanced code in which letters are replaced by group letters. To becomes Al, Vi becomes GF and so on. Much harder to memorize however it is harder to break.’
‘Spaceless code - Harder codes can remove spaces and punctuation. So “I am a cat” becomes “Iamacat” however while short messages are easier to break longer blocks of test can take far longer without the right key.’
‘Allegorical code - Known as “pun codes” it takes words into ideas. Used often in Alchemy a block of text can be riddles that talk about colors. idea and animals with each term having hidden meanings. While it can be broken more often than not a key will be needed.’
‘Escrow code - A keyed code in which the message can only be broken by getting separate key parts’
The quill was placed down at last as Vick looked over his notes. The pages that filled his book were the terms for this new art that he had to know which was why he had to write them down to understand them better.
Now it was time for Vick to start doing more hands on with the craft. The books laid out examples about easy to break shift codes and the answers so with that Vick would use as a reference in case he got lost. This would be make good for his writing as well.
‘My name is Vick.’
‘Shift right 5’
‘Qd tfrj nt anhp’
Even while knowing the key this was hard for him to do. He had to think of each letter location from the letters he made. While it was slow work he was still going to push himself in hopes to understand and master this with time just like he was with Malediction.
‘I live on Sahova as a mage’
‘Shift Left 6’
‘C fcpy ih mubipu ul u guay’
Vick was already getting better at it. With this code he was seeing patterns such as A’s became U’s and I’s became C’s. It was still slow but he was at least learning more of it.
