The night air was hot and heavy with humidity, illuminated by the soft light of Leth's Glow, brightening Kol's path as he walked in preparation to the first day of his new job. Recently employed as a bouncer at the restaurant, Kol did not intend to be late... ever. In fact, his shift would be starting any minute now, and he strolled into the establishment, eyes immediately searching for his employer.

Everything was different once you entered. The rugged feeling of battle that bordering the military compound seemed to fade away, absorbed by the bright fixtures that dangled from the ceiling. It was for the Leth's Glow was among the pricier and more elaborate buildings in Taloba, radiating a luxurious feeling to relax the battle worn. And then you had Kol, someone who had never cared to own more than what was necessary to survive, wandering about and sidling past plush cushions. Perhaps if there had been more of the warrior types lounging about, his presence would have faded into the background. But the establishment just seemed to open its doors, all employees beginning to take their places.

The bartender was checking stock, wiping down the counters. The man's name was Taquil if he remembered correctly, quiet and hard working - quite similar to Kol in that regard. They had exchanged very little in terms of conversation but he found that the Poisoned Arrow was a respectable man who worked for the Vantha owner loyally. Taquil didn't look up from his work when Kol passed, leaving the Myrian to his own business. There was a silent understanding that didn't need excessive acknowledgement.

Kol's job was simple... in theory. Watch the restaurant, make sure no one started something they shouldn't be. He would get rid of those who had too much to drink or decided the establishment was a place to bring outside problems in. It was a pretty straight forward job with little socialization, so Kol hoped he wouldn't have any more trouble than the occasional punch or two. In fact, since talking wasn't his strongest suit, listening and responding with actions seemed to a fair fit, no doubt something the Vantha had noticed when she employed him. She had given him a way to work hard and do what he knew best.

Many might have thought Kol ignorant or slow due to his natural ability or impulse to jump to physical means when it came to handling situations. Kol could care less what those people thought. He might have been a bit impulsive when it came to defending his family or his honor, but he was capable of thinking his actions through, and often did. He would have to use those skills tonight.

Trien was watching him from across the room, and he waved in acknowledgement. I am here. Once he had received a greeting from the Vantha, Kol went to stand to the side, his large form melting into the wall. He stayed close to the shadows, staying out of the way of the customers that slowly began to trail inside. Powerful women. Craftsmen. Veterans with worn skin and jagged scars. The place filled quickly, the smell of Lethshine and Syna's Rise swirling and leaving the building with a bitter sweet scent. Warriors lounged on the cushions, laughing louder with each drink consumed, challenges shouted and bragging about physical prowess racing back and forth.

Kol watched it all.

A particular conversation between a boastful female with two marks of Myri and her elder amused him. She would lose. While the younger of the two had received Myri's blessing twice, the elder woman sat with a patient smile on her face as she sipped her drink. A large battle axe rested in her lap, a weapon that would have seemed out of place for someone her age, did she not look as fearsome as ever. Even with her loose skin and faded tattoos, her posture was strong and she radiated power.

Power without skill is useless. Myri may have blessed her, but she has much to learn. Kol didn't want to think that someone who had been recognized by the goddess past their first marking was anything but worthy, but years of experience was hard to be rivaled. It would have been a close fight, if anything. Kol would have liked to have watched it, if given the proper opportunity. He could learn something. But not here. Luckily, the challenges were empty, all good fun and less than serious.

A moment of relaxation. Kol continued to move around the room, weaving past those growing intoxicated, somewhere the stream of drums and music lifting around them. Some patrons rose to dance, others sat watching in mirth. The mood was contagious, a smile slowly threatening to creep upon the bouncer. Kol was no longer in the military and often spent his evenings training or in deep sleep, but the idea of unwinding in Leth's Glow after a particularly rough day made sense. This was a euphoric atmosphere. It was a haven.

Trien was radiating positivity, chatting with customers and making them feel welcome. Eyes ablaze with passion for her work as she cooked, with the mixed blood around no one noticed the rise of heat as bodies danced and celebrated, shadows flowing on the walls in an ethereal effect. The scent of hot food, rice and soups, being distributed around only added to the richness of Leth's Glow.

"Kol." Taquil spoke only once and he appeared, heading the motioning towards the kitchen. Trein worked effeciently, bright eyes focused as she handed him a plate. Slices of yellow pineapple were piled high, bordered with fresh mango.

"Take that to the man with the bone piercing. I'm busy here. How is it out there?"

How are they behaving? The question took little pondering, "They are well. No problems so far... The warrior with the tattoos?" Such a description was likely to be vague, but the man in question was easily recognizable. He stood out, his frame was short in stature and tattoos that covered almost every inch of showing skin. He was an intricate web of images, his scars creating raised, white lines that interrupted the artwork. A thick bone ran horizontally through his septum that amplified his large nose.

Kol knew exactly who Trein had referred to, but her confirmation was important. Once he got the green light, Kol left to deliver the food, plate in hand. Back on the floor, his eyes scanned he surroundings to make sure there were no disturbances since leaving. Everyone still seemed to be in high spirits, Taquil's concoctions taking hold and muddling minds.

He set the fruit down in front of the man, receiving an inaudible thanks. Just as Kol was beginning to turn around and return to the doorway, out of the corner of his eye, a woman jumped up, swinging around her arms. Her wide hips swayed off beat to the music, her style more interpretive from the alcohol. She was laughing loudly, and twirled, only for the mace at her waist to smash into another person's drink on the table behind her. She was oblivious, drunkenly dancing, knocking things over here and there.

Kol materialized instantly and only hesitated for a moment. Do I grab her? The woman stumbled around, nearly falling on a couple lounging on some cushions, and Kol shot out, grabbing her upper arm to help her regain her balance. She was laughing, realizing her mistake before her mind processed someone grabbing her and she tried to pull away.

"Get ooooff m-me," she slurred, her smile twisting into annoyance, "Le' go," She pulled harder, but Kol tightened his grip. He needed her to calm down, or he would have to throw her out.

In a stern voice, Kol returned her glare with a look of his own, "Stop. You need to sit." For a brief second, he thought she was going to do as he said, but something clicked in her mind, and she jerked backwards to free herself, slipping from his grip and falling to the side. Her hands waved wildly as she tumbled, hitting a drink of Lethshine from the hand of one of the Myrians who wandered over to the scene. The alcohol flew into the air, spraying into Kol's eyes.

A crash and then people jumping up and complaining. Kol shook the liquid from his face, eyes burning and brimming with pain. He tried to see, but his eyes watered and he reached out, patience gone. Kol had no doubt in his mind now, whether or not he was permitted to take matters into his own hands. If there was ever going to be an opportunity to do his job, that time was now. Growling in pain and frustration, Kol felt a hard punch knock his head to the side.

The woman from earlier had regained her footing and the onlookers had shifted and moved to make way for the bouncer and woman. Slowly opening his mouth and closing it to test his jaw, Kol straightened up, vision bloodshot and face dark with fury. The woman drunkenly swayed, the beads of her hair clattering together as her dreadlocks moved. She lifted her fist again for another attack, but her intoxication made her slow. Although he blinked furiously to mend his blurry vision, Kol grabbed her sloppy hit and yanked her forward. No longer attempting to play the nice guy, once she was in arms reach he bent and threw the woman over his shoulder.

She kicked and screamed profanities, but Kol powered through. Grunting from the female's weight, he handled the drunk woman as professionally as he could muster, resisting the urge to shake her for her sheer irritating behavior. She was embarrassing herself and her clan. She was a shame to Myri and was ruining the night at Leth's Glow for others. Kol did not like her.

The watering of his eyes slowed but the punches in his back increased. The female was slurring some select words at him, but she was too intoxicated to put up a good fight and Kol walked briskly to the door, slipping outside to express his frustration. He tossed the woman roughly off of his shoulder and she smacked onto the dirt, trying to jump up angrily, but she lost her balance and fell backwards.

Now, Kol's job was to throw people out, not beat them senseless like he wanted, so in a stern voice and a dangerous glare, he looked down at the female, "Go home." There was more he wanted to say, to scold her further, but it would not have proven useful. He doubted the drunken patron would have remembered anything the next day.

The bouncer began to turn and go inside, rubbing his eyes free from the alcohol and tears, but the sound of sobbing stopped him from leaving completely. Something inside the woman had broken, and she sat pathetically on the ground, loud wails pouring forth, face in hands. Kol had spent very little time with those crying, even with younger siblings, and so comforting others was not his strong suit.

Leave her... She just wants attention. Kol tried to harden his thoughts, but every time he tried to walk away his feet refused to budge. He let out a long irritated sigh which the woman was oblivious to, and crouched in front of her, eyeing her carefully. He said nothing, letting the festivities of Leth's Glow continue to play in the background, and the crickets lament to the cries of the Myrian in front of him.

Kol remained silent, and through eyelashes wet from crying, the woman looked up, supposedly to hear the man who stayed with her say something encouraging. Kol took a deep breath, and looked long at her face, "Stop."

The woman's hopeful expression contorted and snot began to run down her face. Kol thought it quite a pathetic scene, particularly to be a Myrian woman and let just any stranger see you cry, but when she spoke, he held back his judgement. "He-He... Dead." More sobs.

He's dead? Who's dead?

"Who?"

She cried and Kol's patience was being tested. He nearly pushed for an answer again when she muttered a response, "Husband." Kol raised a brow. Not many Myrians married, but there were rituals in some clans for such things, his included. While he didn't particularly sympathize with the woman, he knew death was a tricky thing, even causing you to seek comfort in ways you normally wouldn't. This woman was drowning her sorrows.

He was uncomfortable. He didn't know what to say; all thoughts blank, Kol raised his hand, awkwardly patting the woman's back. He had seen this action done for others, he could imitate it well enough. Although body was stiff and the gesture wasn't wholly sincere, the bouncer was trying.

A few chimes passed and her crying slowed. Kol continued with the rhythmic patting and was nearly about to get up and leave when the woman lurched forward, clutching his arm for support. Wha-? Hot vomit spewed from her lips, and she convulsed, splattering the sour smell of rice and lethshine all down the front of his shirt. Kol jerked away, jumping to his feet with skin crawling in disgust and disbelief. The woman continued to vomit and then fell to her side, passing out.

This was not part of the job description! With arms held out, he looked around for something to clean himself off with, growling loudly. He should have walked away.
