When everyone was set and gathered at the top of the stairs, Tanen began to lead the way down. James actually hung back, waiting until everyone else had passed him to walk slowly at the rear of the party. Grandmother stayed by Tanen, occasionally tapping walls and stone curiously. The walls certainly lived up to it, covered with scratches that could or could not be designs or writing… it just depended on how you looked at them. Once, there nearly looked like a face, scowling down at the people below… but it quickly turned out that few of the lines were really connected.

The stone would hold the same ultraviolet sparkle that the above-ground ones did, to the only member of the group who could see in that spectrum. However, with a lack of much light at all… it would be a challenge to see much in the gloom. Their lanterns did a decent job, but candles or braziers along the walls would have been much more appealing. Sadly, it seemed that the only thing here was… stone.

The stairs were rather even, and soon they ended on a flat plain. Tanen, at the front, frowned at the two options ahead. There was a flat wall to their left, no help at all. In front of them seemed to be a doorframe, though it lacked a door. To the right was an empty space, opening into a room that seemed to be pure blackness.

”Forward or left?” Tanen mused, glancing at the others. ”Forward” the old lady declared, and began marching in that direction, despite the lack of light. ”Alright!” her companion called, before rushing up to bring an orangy glow to the way ahead.

Firmly enclosed in stone. Surrounded by the sheer crushing mass of slab upon slab of weathered stone. The more time they spent in these dark ancient halls, the more it reminded of a long forgotten tomb. The walls around them were covered in scratches, and hard as he tried he could not decide if they were scribblings of ancient creatures, just plain scratches or mystical designs. Were they made from human hands and reduced to this intelligible form ? Were they just furious or desperate claw marks of something more sinister? The way Tanen and Grandma ignored them, slowly made those thoughts disappear, and Daegron followed without complaint.

Their descent into the darkness below didn't last long. He walked in front of James and constantly stopped to inspect the crude surfaces that loomed around him, or to check his footing. The undisputed leaders of this small party were pretty certain of their steps; as if they'd been there before or had previous knowledge of this ruin's layout. Soon they reached a small chamber with a flat floor. Tiny pebbles and a thick layer of dust welcomed the soles of his boots. There was no other way to go but forward. The gaping doorframe seemed like the most logical choice. The room on their right was pitch black. And it was ignored. Daegron wanted every single corner of this place searched. One would never guess what treasures or dangers could be hidden in the strangest of places.

"Point your lamp that way for a few ticks" he said to James and took a few steps away, in order to inspect things. It's not like he'd be left behind. His eyes squinted, trying to discern any useful details. He ducked, grabbed a few pebbles from the ground and tossed them towards what thought to be the opposite wall of this chamber. HeIt wasn't too big of a room, but he could not see a thing. The dim lamp light was unable to pierce the utter blackness. It was hopeless; the pace was picked up once their direction was decided and he rushed back in line.

The Art will twist you and turn you.
It will break you and tear you asunder; from your scattered remains it will shape you.
It will engulf you and spit you out.
It will fester in your mind, disfigure your body and blacken your soul.
And so on and so forth, through an endless chain of transformations till the time comes and you are everything...
Then you'll truly be nothing...

Piraen thought the flat stairs were suspicious. His apartment back in Ravok had stairs that were move uneven than these. Though that would probably be expected, considering that his stairs had traffic flowing over them all day, every day; these stone stairs probably hadn't had feet upon them since...since whenever they were made.

"How long do you think this has been here?" Piraen ran his fingers along the wall as he spoke. Occasionally he would stop to trace the lines engraved into it, but it was useless; Piraen knew nothing of ancient languages, or new ones, for that matter. He could only recognize the Common tongue, and this was not it.

As he reached the bottom, Piraen watched as the group split. Two of their leaders went forward with Sevris, while James and Daegron looked into the darkness to the right. Piraen slowed, waiting for Daegron to finish his analysis. Who knew, maybe this man saw something the rest of the group could not. Just like Pi saw rainbows in ordinary objects, perhaps Daegron saw treasures (or dangers) in dark rooms.

"Any luck?" Piraen asked his fellow adventurer when he returned.

"How long do you think this has been here?" Sevris heard Piraen say.

He gave an involuntary shrug, and said "Probably early Post-Valterrian."

The Paladin's lantern kept his armor ablaze with a rich shine. He stayed concentrated on the path ahead of them. There may have been many treasures in this place. But there was one such treasure above all in which he was interested in.

However the deeper the ventured the more he doubted that. The place was eerie, and James was unperturbed as well as grandmother. It had stones that shined with ultra-violet color. The Paladin had never seen their like before in all the lands of Ravok.

But the excavation group came to an impasse when the path lead them to two choices. ”Forward or left?” Tanen said to them. Before anyone could voice a choice the grandmother replied enthusiastically.

"Forward!" Then she stepped forward and walked even when there wasn't muchlight to guide her down the dark path. Sevris sped up to lighten the path. No telling what they would find where this pathway led them.

James snorted at Sevris’ answer, from his own place in the line. ”Early post Val? I doubt they could have built anything like this. Since we have no knowledge about it, and with this funny writing… probably pre-Val. Grandmother? Your thoughts?” He was apparently going to the woman for her elderly advice, but she simply snorted in reply. ”Me? Ask me? Petch, I’m younger than all o’you! Even you, tailor.” She wiggled a finger at Piraen, before cackling to herself and continuing on with her hobble down the stairs.

Daegron would find an empty room in his investigation, one maybe two or three times the width of the stairs long. He might have been able to spot the blackness of a doorway in their through the gloom, but otherwise… little else. There was no time to truly investigate before the party marched through the chosen doorway.

Though there was another choice in this room, which was as empty as the first, the old lady kept walking, turning and going through the closest one on her left. Tanen followed quickly, lighting the way, and expecting the rest of the group to follow along.

There was something different about this place, obvious as soon as they’d entered. First and foremost, it was massive. The ceiling was taller than all of the rest, though low enough that there was no connection with the surface. The air around also had a scent, though an incredibly faint one. It was the smell of… must. Must and dust and everything in between. ”Look around!” grandmother called, dragging Tanen along to the left to look at something that had caught her eye.

The others would be able to explore as they wished. James puttered forward, looking for an exit or two, occasionally poking something. One could find stone shelves in this room, though only one in ten was standing up. They were taller than the average man by an extra four feet or so, with plenty of space for whoever had lived here to keep things.

”Books…” Tanen could be heard to mutter, from where he was with the old lady. ”Books!” he called again, this time louder, to reach the whole group. ”This thing is covered with books! Or what’s left of them. I can’t read a word…” He drifted off into incomprehensible mutterings.

”Keep looking for things!” called James, from the patch of light where he stood.

OOCFeel free to scour around, find maybe a book or a chest or a shelf with funny things on it. In my next post I’ll describe what you can find, be it something interesting, or just complete junk. Have fun, and do some exploring! Stay in the library though.

Grandmother's words initially went through one of Piraen's ears and out the other. Next to Sevris, Piraen probably appeared to be youngest. He wouldn't complain brought if his appearance brought on an image of youth; that would most likely help him in the long run. "Who's that youngster?" "Oh that's Piraen, and his in his 50th year." The thought brought a smile to the tailor's face. The longer he thought about it, though, the more he got the feeling that that wasn't what the elderly woman was talking about. Had she figured out his Kelvic origins? Most assumed that Piraen was a Chaktawe. After all, that was much more likely than a well-dressed, well-mannered Kelvic in most Ravokian's books.

Piraen would not say anything about it, though. He couldn't risk revealing his true form when the woman could have merely been making an observation of Piraen's boyish looks. Instead, he would offer a weak defense of Sevris's position:
"This could have been one of the first generations' home, though. They took refuge underground, right? What would the likelihood be that a pre-Valterrian house would survive the Valterrian, anyway?" At this point, Pi was more thinking out loud than speaking to anyone. The origin of this structure was an intriguing subject, even if it was way out of Piraen's league, mentally.

As they entered the next room, Pi shrugged those thoughts away and dutifully followed the group. He wouldn't question Grandmother's choice. He could already be at her mercy, and he didn't want to push it. It wasn't really his place to question, either. If she so decisively followed one path, it was clearly the right one.

That assumption could not have been more correct, either: the group now found themselves in a large library. Pi smiled at the sight of the vaulted ceilings and towering shelves. As a child, his mother often dragged him to libraries to read up on etiquette and to people-watch. Though his memories with his mother aren't the fondest, those library trips were always enjoyable.

Pi lifted his lantern. It didn't offer too much light, so the tailor began to move around the room. As he walked through a row of shelves, he found himself counting the oddities. One bookshelf looked to be biology themed. It had animal skulls on the shelf that was eye level with Pi. Below that shelf were jars of liquids. Some had shattered, releasing their contents all over the shelf. Pi thought he saw a small creature's body next to a broken jar, but he dared not lean over to look; the shelf emitted a smell so vile that even Pi, whose diet consisted mostly of nearly-rotten fruits and leftover fish, flinched. Maybe we don't do that... Pi continued to walk down the aisle.

Next was a fairly plain shelf. At first glance, nothing appeared to be abnormal about it. It had books jammed into every available space, and had no skulls or foul-smelling flasks. Pi would brave a peek; he ran his finger over the books, leaving an obnoxious line in the dust before making his selection. After removing the book with care, the man jostled the lantern and novel until one was in each hand. With a flick of the hand, he opened the book. When the pages settled, a sketch popped out of the page. It was a drawing of a man, skin oozing from his face, sharpened teeth bared, hair wild as an animal. The more Pi looked at it, the more real it looked. In fact, he swore he could hear the barbaric shout the sketch was screaming ring through his ears and could see the merciless man's eyes narrowing at the sight of him . . . Pi put the book down with haste. Maybe we don't do that, either...

Having his fair share of monstrous men and smelly shelves, Piraen pushed forward without letting his eyes so much as flicker up to the next few shelves. After a few ticks of serious tunnel-vision, Pi happened across a desk. Just like everything else in the library, it was abnormally large and stone. Worn papers littered the desk, wrinkling with age. Pi placed the lantern on the very little clear space that was on the far corner of the desk, then leaned over the desk. One hand hovered over the desk, waiting to eagerly snatch up a curiosity, while the other moved towards the pushed in stone chair for balance. When it reached the chair's back, Piraen noticed that it was warm, for some odd reason. He pushed the oddity from his mind before he could start thinking of the possible undead, or ghosts, or pre-Valterrian monsters that could explain the warmth.

Nearby, the sound of shuffling feet drew closer. Still, the tailor refused to scare himself unnecessarily. He did not lift his eyes from the desk, but still spoke to the sound behind him.

"Any luck?"
"None but stone and dust... for now" he responded, with a slight hint of disappointment in his tone. Could it be that this place was looted clean centuries ago ? Someone must have stumbled in here at some point, though if one had, it would be a long time ago. At least that's what the thick layers of dust made him think.

Thinking that it would be pointless to just try and search every room in this place while grandmother was fixed on her choice of direction, he just followed to the enormous hall that opened before them. It was pitch black still, but the echoes of their own voices and footsteps that slowly reverberated, revealed the sheer size of this room. Shelves everywhere, made from that petching stone material and taller than any man. They were littered with what appeared to be books and other random items. A library ! A place or study or research! While not a treasure per say, and not easily converted into tangible wealth, the place made the Morpher's eyes shine with pleasure. Knowledge was power, that much he knew, and hidden in all those tomes there must have been secrets or fragments of information that may prove invaluable to one such as him.

Yet it would take months of work to find the good parts, that was certain. Even more so, when he picked a random book, only to find out in the oil-lamp's dim lighting that he couldn’t read the title, let alone its crumbling pages. The scribbled lines made no sense, written in some language long forgotten. It was no surprise. Even if there was some obscure kind of knowledge hidden in those books, it would be carefully coded. No one likes giving away secrets.Yet it was definitely worth a try to grab a few books before the vultures came searching. Perhaps he would be lucky and not spend ages to decipher a book about ancient pastry recipes.

With James's suggestion to search around, Daegron broke from the rest like everyone else did, not straying too far from the lamp that rested on a desk nearby. The shelf closest to his right was mostly intact, and packed with books haphazardly resting in piles or rows. It felt to him that they were put there in a rush; for some reason, whoever was frequenting this library, did not take time to put them back to their respective shelves. As he reached to grab a random book, a drop of water fell from above, wetting his wrist. He looked up curiously, only to spot a huge stalactite looming above. Nature had found it's way through the massive stonework; some underground stream perhaps flowed above them. With a muttered curse he watched as the book he'd just grabbed crumpled into moldy pieces. It was apparent now that the tomes that laid before him were destroyed.

Moving on further to his right, passing a line of shelves that were barely standing he stopped in front of another desk. There were piles of papers stacked, a few sheets scattered all over, a few charcoal pieces and a couple of books. Whatever was written on these aged parchments was long gone, yet the books looked to be in good condition. He curiously opened one of them. Their dusty covers were made from leather and still stood the test of time. He casually browsed it's contents and was pleasantly surprised. There were drawings, sketches and strange symbols all over, and small scribbled paragraphs that he guessed to be explanations. His greedy gaze shone once more as he looked around, pushing the tomes into his bag with a cunning smile. An idea formed in his mind, that someone was studying here, ages ago and taking notes from the tomes that stood waiting for a curious hand to grab. He mused at the idea of finding some hidden piece of knowledge, and moved on to search for more.

As the flame of an oil lamp danced behind him, carried around by one of his companions, the Morpher spotted a little something atop of an almost destroyed shelf on the nearby wall. It wouldn't be too hard to climb up there, using the shelves as if they were a ladder. He set his left foot on the lowest shelf and pushed his body upwards. His next step wasn't so certain, much to his dismay. The next shelf broke, almost making him loose his footing. Stubborn as always he pulled his body up with his hands, while his fingers tried to grip the smooth stone surface. His right foot finally landed on a solid step, and after testing his balance for a few ticks, he forced his stocky figure upwards once more. There was an ominous cracking sound as he lunged forward and spread his hand to reach the object. It was roughly egg-shaped, probably made of metal and slightly larger than his fist. And when he finally grabbed it, the shelf he was standing on collapsed, sending him straight to the ground. With a shuffling sound, a curse and a thud, he landed hard on his butt, prize in hand.

"Find anything interesting yet?" said the tailor behind him and he instantly stopped examining the markings on it's surface and hurriedly put the object in his bag.
"Crumbling tomes that make no sense, dust and stone... what about you ?" he answered and his eyes fell on something moving in the rubble that he'd just caused.
He leaned closer to see and something startled him making him scurry a few stems behind.
Behind the broken shelves a slight opening appeared, not wider than a couple inches. And from that hole, a busy crowd of centipedes, beetles and other large sized insects poured out...

Laughing at his own stupidity he added:
"And insects... lots of stinking insects..."

[Left] Excursion - Spring SQ

Postby Sevris on June 14th, 2014, 1:16 pm

The library was huge and seemed as if once before it had been magnificent. Beyond the crumbling it was apparent that Sevris found this quite fascinating.

His earlier comment about the age being post-Valterrian was shot down when James noted they were more likely pre-Valterrian. Pi tried to defend it but Sevris shrugged. He was very young but he was also interested in anything pre-Valterrian so maybe that was a good thing.

He taught himself at a young age how to speak and write in the Ancient Tongue. This was only possible to his many connections with slaves. Books were impossible to come by unless you took them from his grandfather. Which was common back then.

But this also meant that there may be a lot of books written in supposed scrabble, but could probably be deciphered by him.

His foots steps were heavy as he walked towards a large age-decayed shelf. It was mostly broken down there were plenty of books on it. They were all mostly the same, as age had taken its toll already.

But there was a larger book sitting on the high shelf that was still relatively old. But it was not as decayed as the others. Something was strange about the book as his helmet allowed him to pick up magic in its many uses. It was large and red and it enticed him. What exactly was he seeing?

Then he reached for it.

Despite Piraen’s suspicions about the warm chair, there was a rather logical reason why it was in that state. Namely, James. The quiet explorer had sat down in the chair for a moment whilst ahead of the group, staring at the table in consideration before continuing on his journey. The man had found nothing, whereas the Kelvic would be able to notice something slightly strange, after shoving papers off the desk. Under one odd pile he would find fabric. A small pillow covered in fabric, fully intact despite the years. Any normal cloth would have dissolved after so long, falling into pieces from age and wear.

The pillow was square, about three-quarters of a foot in length. It was rather plain as well, one solid color without tassels and decoration. However, if Piraen picked it up… he’d notice a surprising quality. In the flickering light of his lamp the pillow would shimmer, cloth shifting colors almost to match the flame, in vibrant reds and yellows and oranges. There was no obvious pattern to it, and it even when held still the design would continue to change. If he checked the back, it would be in a similar state, despite being in complete shadow. In a place that almost felt like it was all greyscale… this color would be one remarkable bright point in the dreariness.

Pi:This is just a tidbit of what is to come, for you :D

Once Daegron got a good look at his little egg, he’d find a few odd things on the surface. It looked perfectly smooth, except for two sets of grooves carved into the sides. One went along the top in large writing, stating something in the language that was unknown to all in the room. The other was deeper, and went straight through the middle, dividing the egg into two halves. In fact, it wasn’t just a marking… it was an opening.

If he twisted one of the halves enough, after some effort there’d be a feeling of relief, and the whole container –for it was a container – would begin to twist open. It wouldn’t take much time to open after that, and soon the whole thing would come apart. Inside, there was a small packing of soft materials, actually the same fabric that Piraen had found, though the properties would be less obvious. Tightly stuffed inside, after some unwrapping, Daegron would find… a pair of glasses. They’d folded in half across the nose arch to fit into the egg with little screws and joints, and the arms as well, but when unfolded and assembled the appearance would be obvious.

Daegron would probably be tempted to put them on, and would find quite a remarkable sight when he did so. The room would light up, and if he looked at the walls and the ends of book cases, ghosts of lamps flickered there, though there were only the barest remains existed in real life. The lamps looked like they were half there, half not there, the pictures slightly transparent to reveal the grey walls and floors. And the book cases… the book cases were standing up, or at least there were ghosts of them like that, standing and full of books and tomes and odd objects and jars. In fact, it looked exactly the way it had when this place was at its prime… though there were no figures to be seen.

Daegron:So you’ll know the basic properties of these glasses, they show you what a place looked like exactly one year before the Valterrian, though only in half an image. It’ll be hard to discern what is real and what isn’t with them on. You will also be unable to see sentient creatures, though non-sentient ones are alright (animals). You’ll start feeling a headache after a few chimes, though after 10 chimes you’ll get a full on migrane.

Sevris’ book was a strange one indeed. After opening, he’d find blank page after blank page after blank page. However, after a few minutes they seemed to darken, and what look like ink writing floated onto the page. If he flipped through the pages again he’d find them all identical, markings shifting across the pages in no particular order, some spiraling and going in squiggles, or simply drifting off the page again. A line seemed to come from the edge and rapidly sketched a square, before the image disappeared into nothingness. Half the things on the page were images or half-images, the rest words in a multitude of foreign languages. It seemed like simple gibberish… except everything was moving.

If he looked for long enough, however, something almost useful would pop onto the page. Big and red, filling the entire sheet, was an arrow, simple and conservative, pointing in the direction of the far side of the library. It stayed there for a tick… then flicked out again, leaving the page to resume its ‘rambles’.

OOCYou may notice, I’m giving you your prizes/awards now! Except for Pi, though you should have a vague idea. Most of these will be relatively useless until I give a hint, though Daegron’s will give an interesting insight into the place, and Sevris’ will just be odd. Sevris, you can come up with anything on the pages that you like, as long as they aren’t in Common or are the big red important things. Now… lets continue on! I’m sorry for my delays, but everything should be speeding up now.

Postby Sevris on June 24th, 2014, 10:07 pm

What was unfolding before Sevris's eyes made him give an audible gasp of shock. The book had been blank only seconds before, and now things that he could not grasp were spouting about the paper. Foreign words in languages he had never seen before appeared and disappeared on the pages.

At one time he barely caught a sentence in Tukant. But he was not well versed in Tukant to capture it before it too disappeared. Then however as he started to turn the pages, a symbol of a glyph ran past the top of the page. Following that text of the Ancient Language.

Very unfamiliar to the common folks as the Ancient Language was basically a dead language. Spoken well before their time when the Valterrian never happened. However there were a few people, mostly mages, that actually remember its use.

Glyphs were a form of that which meant this book indeed had magical properties. What sorcery is this? He thought instantly. But suddenly a in between the formations an arrow appeared out of nowhere. It was big and red impossible to miss. It was pointed in the direction to the far side of the library.

Then it disappeared again.

I think there's more to this book than I thought. He then followed the direction forgetting all in his company and headed to the area.
