The Viper's Grip

Postby Haasha on June 7th, 2014, 3:35 pm

514 AV, 7th of the Yellow Stone.

A pack of Akila hounds was bad enough. Haasha could call upon the hazy memory of the run as she curled on the branch of the tree, trying to calm her shaky breath.

She was leaving the place where she spent the nighttime, to leave before the dawn, when she'd noticed a shuffle in the leaves, and a black beast silhouette sneaking up before lunging towards her with a short growl... To the majority of predators she was a relatively appealing threat. Skinny and small, with little meat on her bones whatsoever, she could maybe run fast, but certainly, from a predator's point of view, wouldn't fight back. And she ran. Through the bushes, over the smal half-dried stream, splashing water loudly, leaping over the water roots of the trees, into the thick foliage again, trying to catch a glance on her pursuitors as she fled for her dear life, quite literally. The backpack, unbuckled, hit her on the back, the flask flapped, and her thin legs smashed into the mud and stomped the grass.
The hounds were shortening distance very fast, and suddenly another, larger stream grew just before her. The muddy water was too treacherous, not even for the snakes, but the depth - Haasha was deeply unsure if she, or the contents of her pack, would survive the swim. Days and weeks of walking have worn her out.
Several instants to think, if only she wanted to live. A tree was bending over the water lightly, and if she took a risky jump, she could reach the higher branches. It seemed to be her best chance. Without slowing down for a second, Haasha ran along the grass-covered part of the bank of the stream, then jumped, taking foothold from the upper part of the root which stood out of the water slightly, worked up knees straightening with all the power she could lend.
The root bent down lightly, the backpack almost slipped off one of her shoulders, and her fingers proved to be quite sweaty - if not for the half-gloves, she'd be hanging above the shallow part of the water, within reach, on the tips of her fingers.
The hounds came in view as she climbed heavily on the branch, nails scraping on the trunk, legs shivering to stand up and climb higher, where she would definitely be out of reach. There were worse things to be met on the trees, but Haasha had more than a hypothetical problem to deal with at the moment...

Her hands hurt, her cheek caught fire a minute or so ago - probably a large scratch while speed-staggering in the intertwining goddamned roots and almost running her head into a tree. Her ankle was aching dully, she probably sprained it, and had to hope from there that it was not serious. Luckily, her body was covered enough not to have gotten any more scrapes, and her nails were hard enough not to break. She looked gloomily at her nails, then downwards. The hounds kept jumping at the tree. Haasha closed her eyes for a few seconds, feeling her heart pounding heavily.
An hour passed, then another one. Part of the pack was somewhere nearby, scouting for a more accessible victim, perhaps, the others could be seen under a tree. Haasha shuddered at an unusually loud howl somewhere nearby, then branches breaking, and another beast has drawn the attention of the pack, which took off to pursue almost immediately.
The night's last hunt didn't end with her only because the chase was short and she was lucky, the half-blood understood that clearly. When she came to her senses fully, she carefully took a look around the tree. There was a way to slide down it, at a dangerous angle, but if it was done from that lucky lower branch, she could land not in the muddy bank, but on the soft grass, neatly and quietly. If it was done right.
...she could swear she'd heard something. Instead of following the chosen course, the half-blood stilled behind the foliage's cover, eyes widening in the possible direction of the sound.

"Finally... ha..." The Viper Dhani in human form named 'Aka' heaved a relieved breath as she rested her back on a large jungle tree, inhaling the fresh humid forest air with vigor, trying to clear out the drowsy plague that haunted Zinrah since the beginning of Summer. No one seemed to know the cause and no one seemed to care, her Constrictor cousins lazed around, sleeping for most of the day, and generally being a burden to the whole nest... well if the whole nest was doing that, no one could really reprimand them.

However, she would not partake in that parade of sloth, no, she was a fiery Viper, she was like flame itself, unquenchable and dynamic, Aka would damn herself before she fell prey to the plague, but of course, staying in the nest made some treacherous part of her mind wishing she could just sleep forever, the only possible and known way to avoid this affliction was to get out of Zinrah itself. The Viper leaned back her head as her breathing steadied down, now she must find something to do, that was partially the reason for her to get out here in the first place anyway.

Standing up, Aka's right hand went to her womb as she rubbed it, she could feel the wee serpent eggs forming there, in the middle of her pregnancy, Aka's stomach took on a rather noticeable bulge due to her small form. It was true after all, her mating with Xen, the Viper male, caused her to be pregnant. Likely next season, she would give birth to her own clutch of eggs. Aka must tread carefully here, she must not bring harm to her unborn children, moving slower than usual, Aka's lithe feet began to carry her forward, into the jungle depths. Searching for an animal or two she could capture to consume, being pregnant made her hungrier faster than usual.

Fifteen chimes into her hunt, Aka still haven't found an edible Threshal or Okapi, and... she also didn't notice the presence of a humanoid being behind the foliage's cover.

The Viper's Grip

Postby Haasha on June 8th, 2014, 5:01 pm

The half-breed stayed as still as she could, heart racing and trying not to make a sound, not even breathe. It felt like she could hear her own thoughts rattling in her head.
"Oh sh... that is actually someone. Who could it be? Anything, but I'd bet for either Miryan, or snake-people - it's their lands after all. Can't see anything on her from here, not a weapon. Maybe it's there, I just can't see it..." staying absolutely still, she slowly stretched out her body, just a little bit forward. The backpack was heavy as hell, her arms shivered. She retrieved a more steady position, feeling a drop of hot sweat glide down her neck. "All right, I cannot see a thing. Maybe she doesn't have a weapon on her. A pregnant small woman in the middle of the jungle. Absolutely alone. And defenseless. Ha-ha, very funny." her mouth twitched in a small humorless smirk which faded immediately. "And she's dressed all fancy... I'll bet 'tis a snake. Either way... I guess I'm the luckiest living damned thing to pass through these jungle since the first damn liana grew here."

As that thought passed her mind, the half-blood's eyes narrowed in a desperate fit of self-pity. She tried to avoid settlements whenever possible, for as long as possible, until she finally lost her way. The jungle were cunning. Could it be that she'd been moving towards some Nest all the time? Haasha felt her hairs stand on ends, and watched the woman move past the position wherefrom the half-blood could be noticed. The bulge of the belly was unmistakable, with such slender features. The small woman was probably carrying a child. Or eggs. Or whatever. Carrying children took a lot of strength, her mother told her. If it was a snake...

"Then she might as well be very, very hungry. And very, very deadly."
Pale eyes widened in quiet terror. She had to escape, that instant, she had to... the opportunity of sliding down the tree was open. Then - what then? Eyes darted to choose the route. Then five steps before a bush, she wasn't sure what it was and hoped sincerely it wasn't man-eating or too poisonous. But before it, those were five steps, the tree trunks were too thin even for her to hide fully. The roots around the area, however, those that threatened to make her trip when the hounds chased her... a couple of them was bulging with scrapes of earth which looked in direction of the woman. A chance had to be taken. She didn't know what godly miracle was bestowed upon her for the snake not to smell her yet, but this miracle would sure be the only one for today. It shouldn't be wasted.

She moved closer to where the branch started. On the other side of the tree, she could see nothing to grip on, so she'd have to pray to slide successfully. Praying to any deity that would hear her about the luck wasn't the sanest or the safest thing to do, but she was too young to slip up yet. Too young.
One heavy swing, and she almost fell off the tree in the very beginning of the risky combination. With a gasp stuck in her throat, unvoiced, and her heart pounding like a blacksmiths hammer, she survived a quick, and heavy slide...
The backpack made a sound of tightening leather, with the things moving inside it, however tight they were tied together. The landing was heavy, too, and at the same time as she staggered sideways, Haasha felt a swelling pain in her ankle. Not sprained, but damaged somehow, after all. Pain blinded her for an instant, then...

Run, her inner voice screamed in the back of her head.
And she ran, those few steps, in limping heavy almost-jumps, as fast as she could, hoping for a miracle that she knew wouldn't happen. She didn't have time nor a wish to look at the woman, but she definitely knew that she had to run, and not make a sound. Whatever the pain might be. Even if her legs broke, she'd run, with the pained cry stuck in her throat and tears burning her eyes, and heart crushing her ribcage from inside.
Too young to slip up. Too young to slip up and get gone in such a foolish, pathetic manner. And if she still wanted to be, she'd have to.
She tripped on the root and fell into the bush instead of diving in it elegantly.
She had to continue down the stream. Drag herself up, as she was doing in that second.
And run.

A glimpse of a shadow darker than usual caught her eye. A cavity deep enough to hide within. Probably some critter's nest, and she'd better pray that it was not inhabited at that moment. She dove in it, curled and made herself turn fast so that she woul face the exit and could watch the snake through the grass. Listen, as well. Nothing stirred or clawed at her - the lair was empty, even though very small. Haasha tried to breath as quietly as she could. Any moment now, she'd have another opportunity to run. She couldn't afford to miss it. Being eaten wasn't on the agenda.

Common Snake-Tongue Arumenic

This was getting tiring and, frankly, boring, she was tired of having to care for each and every step she took for the safety of herself and her unborn child, for a swift and fiery Viper like her, being slow and sluggish were effective to torture her mind. Twenty chimes into the hunt, Aka still haven't found any edible animal, it was as if the jungle knew of her arsonist reputation already and the inhabitants flee from her presence, of course, it was an exaggeration, Aka was simply too loud and slow to hunt in her current state, tired, the Viper leaned her back on a tree as she slowly dropped down into a sitting position.

Idly rubbing her growing tummy, the Viper looked to her left and right, "Hm?" She swore she could hear something moving near her, but Aka was too tired and lazy to approach whatever or whoever it was, if it wasn't an edible animal, she shouldn't care. "..." Actually, she should, she could only rely on her magic for self-defense at the moment, but thankfully, magic was what she does best, exhuming her gaseous reddish res from her palms, they gathered around her in a sphere-shaped thin cloud, ready to be used. The Viper exhaled in pleasure, indulging in the after-effect of casting, they eased her mind somewhat and for a few ticks, she forgot about the forming eggs bumping in her womb.

Idly turning her head at the voice's general direction, Aka was ready to launch her res in swift small lava-tipped stone darts, they shold be enough to kill any common animal quickly, but first, she must check, who knows if it was a fellow snake, or a lizard, or something... "Hey," Aka lazily called to it, "I know you are there, you know." Aka chuckled a bit, look at her, she was talking to an animal, but she wanted some amusement before dinner, "I am hunting, right now, If you are not an animal, sssay sssomething, would you?" Of course, animals couldn't talk... unless they were one of those kelvics, like Bovi.

The Viper's Grip

Postby Haasha on June 12th, 2014, 3:08 pm

Haasha tried to hold her breath and stretched the side of her head to have a better sound-preception of the area. No steps. Even in snake form they made a shuffle, and if the Dhani was still in a woman form (a pregnant woman form), she'd make noise when she'd move. Heart pounded heavily in the ribcage, and her body ached from strain. Touching the ankle did her no good - it damn hurt, and she couldn't tell what was wrong with it. She was shivering, and felt her muscles tremble treacherously, as well, when she slowly pulled herself out of the hole, dragging body on the grass as quietly as she could, before she found footing with her healthy foot. She had to run away, and in a dozen of seconds she'd be hidden from view by all the trees and lianas between them. No crawling around, it was the job of a predator - while she'd have to be witty and fast not to become the prey.

Making a sound meant giving out precise location. She turned her head and upper body...
...and recognized that her head could be seen perfectly well at least partly. She and the snake have almost crossed eyes, and Haasha felt the few blood she had in her face flow to her racing heart, strarting off on the limping run the second she saw the snake. A groan escaped her, though - a harsh, high-pitched breathy sound. Her leg hurt and burned, and the pain from it seemed to spread all over her body, sticking pins and needles straight into her brain. She didn't run for long. The pain soon made her feel sick, all the way down to either screaming or throwing up. The ground beat the breath out of her, and she tried to much herself under a root, covered with long moss. It was a poor hiding spot, one-sided, but with a growing sense of terror she understood that she couldn't make another step nor feel her foot.
"This is the end." a small, pathetic whine stiffled in her throat in a gasp, and her look went glass-like and blank.
She felt drops of sweat glide down her neck and under the shirt, and her head getting light. No, she could still struggle, even if she wouldn't run or even crawl. Haasha reached for her mother's dagger and her fingers clenched on the hilt tightly.

"Hmmm..." Aka huffed lazily when the she heard more shifting of leaves in the bushes, it seemed she had startled whatever or whoever was there, and instead of answering her, it scrammed instead. Being a keen observer, Aka listened closely to its steps, sounded much like something with two legs, instead of the usual four, so... it might not be an animal, Myrian? Impossible, they would attack her instead of running, Another Dhani perhaps? Possibly, someone who wanted to prank her, or... perhaps, a lost human traveler? Wonderful, Aka always needed another servant, even more so in her pregnancy.

Assured that this being was a sentient one, Aka's slowly stood up, grunting as she did so, with her right hand on her belly, protecting it, her gaseous res followed around her like loyal familiars, "Hey," She called out to the unknown person, "I'm not going to hurt you." She tried to sound as sweet and loving as possible, holding back all hostility, but the slight playful stone still slithered its was through. "Come on, come on out now," Aka urged, smiling as she turned her head at the root where she thought the person was hiding, "I know you are there, don't be afraid."

Aka looked up, finding a medium-sized bird, about the size of one's arm, perched on the branch, a smirk curled at her lips as some of Aka's res shaped into a small dart, then she concentrated, shaping the body into a sharp stone dart, then the bottom into reimantic air, with the core still held in res form, Aka carefully aimed the dart then launched it forward. While it soared, the Viper blasted the air, boosting its speed even more, *THUNK!* It hit the bird squarely in its chest, piercing its heart, killing it instantly.

The bird fell to the ground, near Aka's feet, the Dhani then picked it up, offering it to the hiding person, "Look, are you hungry? I got you food."

The Viper's Grip

Postby Haasha on June 14th, 2014, 10:24 am

Haasha lay quiet. She suddenly realized that panic triggered her to flee from the tree's sanctuary too early. There was in fact no certainity that the Dhani would look at her on the tree, or even mind it. If she wasn't to be noticed by the smell... and there was the good wind... she felt the choking wave of shame for own stupidity, and grinded her teeth, clenching fingers on the dagger until the knuckles becaume greyish-white.
"Oh, of course you're not going to do me any harm, except for killing me. No harm at all, really."
She suddenly felt a sharp reminiscence. Just like this, she was curling under the man's bed, listening to the footsteps coming closer. Only now there would be no shuffle, no gasp and no falling body. Her mother wasn't there to look after her.
"I didn't even give her a right burial." A thought slipped by.
It was cut short by the sound of something falling softly onto the ground. Was it something alive? Haasha couldn't tell, but what she could tell is that the snake was now too close. She got ready.
Of course, the half-blood understood that the snake could reach in with anything and kill her. She also understood that if the snake was one of the Djed-shapers, it was the worst situation she's ever been in. Ever.
The primitive trick of luring the animal out with food... was the Dhani actually estimating her wits' capacity that low? Well, she almost had a point. Haasha felt the nervous, quiet laughter choke her and rip the way out of her throat.

"I. Not. Empty shell. Head." she managed to hiss out, still shaky from laughter, feeling her eyes being bitten by helpless tears.
"Crying is for weaklings."
"Why would I want to go out?" she asked. "I don't want to die."

The strange butchered hiss in Snake-tongue genuinely received Aka's attention, this being, whoever it was, was clearly sentient and able to speak in the language of Dhani to boot, The Viper grinned as she put her left hand to her hips as she her right hand wrapped around the bird's neck, "Well, now, you can speak in Snake-tingue, I ssse... though it isss pretty bad, you do need practice, what are you anyway?" She asked, genuinely curious, "A fellow Dhani? If yesss, you don't need to be afraid, why ssshould you?"

The Viper shrugged her shoulders as she leaned her back on a tree, "I don't get why you are ssso afraid of your own kind, only Dhani can speak sssnake-tongue," The Viper gathered her res near her right hand as she quickly formed a stone dagger, then put the bird down near her feet, proceeding to cut some part of its thigh meat, then ate it, "Mmm~" She moaned, it was delicious, but not as delicious as those Treshals, by Ivak, that one was divine. "Come on, are you hungry? Eat me me." Now, Aka felt genuinely concerned, this Dhani looked confused and lost, as a fellow kin, she had to help.

Sitting down near the bird, Aka still kept some of her spherical res near her form, a precaution should the unknown being decided to attack, she was not going to directly approach it, might just spook it further then she would be forced to kill it, the safety of her unborn snakelings came first obviously. "Oh?" Aka raised her head, chewing on a piece of meat, did it just spoke Common?" Amusing, and the voice sound distinctly female, "Haha, and here I thought you can't ssspeak properly," Aka mused, "I'm getting tired of doing thisss, come on out already! I'm not talking to bushesss anymore, if you don't, well I suppose I can have the bird all to myssself, I'm quite hungry." Aka huffed arrogantly as she continued her feast, cutting pieces of succulent meat with her reimancy-created eathern dagger.

The Viper's Grip

Her blood ran hot, then cold, and she considered the offer. Well, now that she'd spoken, not only the woman knew where she was for sure, but probably could tell precisely at least her gender and that she'd probably not been the strongest prey. What could she do? Panick drew back slowly, but the fog on the mind stayed. Maybe, there was quick death.
She didn't want to die, at all. Did she have any other choice? To stay here until the snake'd get tired and either scoop her out or harm her right there? Ridiculous. She'd have more chances seeing the enemy.
"Only Dhani? Well, you'l be fairly surprised, then." The half-blood noted.
There was no point in continuing hiding, the snake made a good point. A sense of a strange, dark humor rose in her. Maybe, she would have a chance to slice that belly open. Would the half-formed eggs be edible?..
"I wonder."

She pulled herself out from below her sanctuary, a curt twist to locate the Dhani, and she stood up, slowly, leaning against the trunk of the tree and dragging herself upwards, a dagger in her hand, scowling and holding off a pained grimace. She didn't put weight on one leg, and she stared on the Dhani woman with her eyes, which in the dusk's dim light looked deep greenish-yelow instead of pale golden.
Her lips curved, opened into a smile which demonstrated her four pairs of fangs, and she let out an exhale. It bore semblance with a chuckle. She was paler than evenher usual sickly self, and violet veins were outlined under thin skin brighter. A keen eye could even see the bigger ones pulsing lightly, feverishly. A fleeting wonder passed her mind - how big exactly a bleeding bruise on her cheekbone was? It hurn, but she wouldn't touch it to check, nor did she have a mirror.
"Aside from my throat's flexibility, my worthless father granted me with curses more than gifts, as you can see." Her face expressed a tired, forced disdain. Fear was cold in her blood, cold as the autumn nights in Silyras. "I'm not of your kind."
She expected to hear the scorning talk, so she spared the Dhani of the neccessity to point out the obvious. It was a bit blood-chilling, how much used to it she'd gotten after those rare, but frequent contacts. It was not always on the tongue, but on the faces, in their eyes. In the twitch of an upper lip, in the lids narrowing and brows furrowing. She was what she was. And when she was alone, which was for the most part of her time, it bothered her even less.

"Hmmm?" Aka noted with a hint of amusement when the being answered with a quite well-formed Common sentence, daring her with a surprise, well, of course the Viper would face it, "Amusssing, surprissse me, then." She liked surprises, pleasant ones mostly, but at the moment, Aka was rather bored and dulled by the sloth plague in Zinrah, she needed something unusual to get her active Viper blood pumping again.

When the being showed herself, Aka immediately raised an eyebrow, she was a... woman, but well, with masculine bodily features, her skin was sickly pale, slightly yellowish actually, and she kinda looked like a Dhani in human form, but there were odd features here and there such as her narrow nose, high cheekbones, and odd long limbs, if this one was a Dhani, she was truly an ugly Dhani. "Oh..." Aka managed a small remark, so that was why she tried to hide herself, she was ashamed of being ugly, well not that Aka could blame her, this woman was rather unsightly to the eyes, especially with those bulging purple veins beneath her skin. She had a couple of bruises on her though, must be all the running and tripping

"Heh," Aka smiled back, grinning with her blood-stained - due to eating raw meat - teeth, staring back at the yellow-eyed woman with scarlet slits, she listened to the being's explanation. Interesting, from what she could gather from the ugly woman's words, she was not a Dhani, or at least, only part of her blood was Dhani, the other was... something else, like Tinnok, the Witch Half-Breed. Tinnok was Half-Myrian though, this one? No way, she couldn't be Half-Myrian, "Ssso, what are you?" Aka tilted her head, not even bothering to hide her mocking racist tone. The Viper stood up, wiping the blood from her mouth with a nearby wet leaf.

The res around the Viper swirled and gathered near her right palm, forming into a gaseous sphere, then she ignited it, creating a fist-sized fireball, the gnosis of Ivak protecting her from the destructive nature of flames, "Sssay, if you are not a Dhani, do you... regret your exissstence? I can fix it for you, sssehehehe~" The Viper aimed the fireball at the woman as she said so. Oh, Aka wouldn't actually kill her of course, she just wanted to toy around with this abomination, by Ivak, she needed to vent her inherent sadistic Viper nature sometimes.

"Ssso, before you anssswer me, at leassst tell me your name, if you have one, that isss."
