The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

The group had been travelling for a long time. For far too long. A collection of Drykas of a variety of stations and positions, all on horseback, they’d been riding for… days. Days and days and days. The journey should have ended much sooner, with them finding the wandering bison and heading back… but for some strange reason the creatures kept eluding them. Someone had started complaining about the tracker’s lack of success, though the younger man insisted that they were following the same tracks. Still, they weren’t lost, as there was the path of webs that the moving city always followed on its circuit around the sea. This was the way it went in Spring. Spring… it really was Spring, this was the first day. When had they left? The seventieth? Something like that… they’d been riding for a long twenty days.

At first Oryani had been unused to the lengthy riding, earning herself saddle sores and aching legs despite her experience in riding. That had lasted a good ten days, but now? She was… fine. She barely noticed, despite the fact that she always felt a little tired and stiff when on Khal’s back. Luckily, the horses had held up well, and every few days they took an easy one, to rest the horses and themselves. The tracker complained, of course, insisting that they wouldn’t catch up to the bison at that pace… but what kind of bison could outrun a Strider in the Sea of Grass? These ones apparently, considering how elusive they’d been. Sometimes the Chatakwe felt like it was almost all a ruse, the tracker dragging them away from the city for some sinister purpose. It was a stupid thought, however, more like a campfire story than anything real.

Today was one of the easy days. The general consensus at this point was that they wouldn’t bother returning to Endrykas. They’d wait nearby Riverfall instead, with the bison (which they would have caught by then, of course) for the city to come to them. That was the glory of a moving city, one constantly drifting and changing depending on the season and tide. Oryani didn’t think she’d ever be able to stand staying in one place. Even her Chatakwe ancestors were nomads after all, though their path was a little more… varied. The tribes wandered through the deserts of Ekytols, staying in one place for a time if food or water was plentiful, and leaving when it was not.

Oryani sat comfortably on Khal’s back, moving with the horse up and done as they headed at a trot through the long grasses. Sometimes they were long, sometimes short… in this place they brushed her knees, when they weren’t stepped on by the stallion first. Both her animals had been enjoying the journey, however… Khal and Alaril. The eagle could sometimes be seen high in the sky, soaring so far above the ground that she was just a golden dot in a blue expanse. The bird always knew to come home, though, and many days Alaril came with prey. Not big enough, but maybe a hare or a bird, and once even a small fox. A big bird could take down big things, and eagles were the perfect predators. The hunters of the group had started praising the creature, betting on what would be brought back each day.

Someone called from the leftmost side of the group, waving their hands in a beckoning gesture. They all directed their horses in the woman’s direction, quickly packing tighter together to hear what had happened. ”Water, over here… we can water the horses now, and refill our skins.” The woman’s hand signing showed her happiness at the discovery, and there were a few grins all round. They’d run into a place where fresh water was rare, so a source was always valuable. Oryani herself had been skimping on the liquid, saving it for her bird and horse, or other members of the group. She’d had a mouthful the day before, but nothing for four days previously. She could go longer, of course, but there was no point pressing her limits. She always liked the feeling of having her water organ full and safe anyways. It was like being well stocked on supplies… Though you’d probably not run out with half a stock, you always felt more comfortable when it was full up. So, she followed the rest of them at a walk, patient enough to wait her turn for the liquid.

The source was really a small pool, bubbling up from the ground as some kind of spring. The water was fresh and cool and everyone drank it up thirstily, from horse to Drykas. Alaril even landed for once, perching at the side to take a few laps, though the bird was careful not to get her feathers wet. Oryani waited for last, as there wasn’t much room around the refreshing liquid, and maybe two horses and a human could fit comfortably. She slipped in when there was an opening, looping Khal’s reins over the back of his neck and the grip on her Yvas, so he could drink freely. The stallion gulped down even more than most, making loud sounds as he did so. When there was a space for herself Oryani moved in beside her Strider, kneeling on the shorter grass and pulling her water skin from her belt. She emptied it first, before refilling it and drinking it all once, twice, before she felt truly. Full. Only then did she fill it one last time and close it with the cork plug, saving it for later.

She stood to see Khal staring at her, the stallion having finished his drink. Affectionately she rubbed his nose, and was rewarded with a snuffle, the horse rubbing his soft nose and muzzle against her palm. She led the Strider away from the pool, checking to see that Alaril and everyone else had left, before finding a good place to mount up. She clutched the grip and swung one leg up, finding her seat just in time to hear the alarm. The warning. The voice was frightened and scared, wavering with the single word, though it was loud enough for all to hear.

”Zith!”

There was a huge scramble for everyone to prepare and react to the call. Zith were dangerous… very dangerous. Dangerous to an extreme. They were the bane of the Sea of Grass, worse than Glassbeaks and Lions and Grass Bears combined. For one, they could fly… and they were vaguely intelligent, though were in all mentality just beasts. But they could plan an attack, outnumber even a large party, and fight as well as a Drykas. The combination of wings and claws made them incredibly deadly. Everyone feared running into a Glassbeak or two out here, in the middle of nowhere, but they were prepared. Zith attacks could be considered rare, but they were not prepared. They had warriors, and everyone was familiar with a weapon, but sometimes there could just be too many. Glancing at the sky ahead of them, Oryani realized that this would be the case.

It was hopeless, they wouldn’t survive a group like this, and suddenly a sinking feeling hit her. She didn’t want this, not really. Still it had happened, and she petching well wasn’t going to go down without a fight. Because of that, she didn’t hesitate grabbing her bow and notching an arrow to the string, keeping it half drawn as she watching their oncoming attackers. A few people called to each other, planning, strategizing, swearing, but she stayed silent, simply glaring into the distance. This was the Sea for you. Armed to the teeth in every way possible, everything out to kill you. It was what she was used to. It was even a miracle she’d lived this long, with her weak immune system, and general status as a protector of Endrykas. This day had to come eventually, in all honesty. She’d just been waiting for it.

She clicked her tongue to urge Khal forward, feeling the horse’s tenseness under her. The Strider had noticed the change in mood as well as she had, and probably smells the danger. A quick thought verified that… they were downwind of the Zith. But that didn’t truly matter… they’d probably been seen long ago, maybe even by the bestial scouts. She still had a hard time believing that they were smart enough for such concepts, but one had to believe their own eyes… Zith were sentient, compared to horses and Glassbeaks. They just had an animal’s instincts and tendencies. That that was what made them so much worse.

She directed Khal a few steps forward, to face the oncoming danger, and what would probably end up being death. Her death. Her Strider’s death. Probably Alaril’s death too. Thought of the bird made her glance around, wondering where the creature had gotten to. Flight could be seen as both an advantage and a disadvantage against the Zith. You were on the same plane as they were, and could dodge, but they were also just as adept in flight, making them more proficient in the air. Despite her search, however… she couldn’t see the bird. Normally Alaril was there in an instant, when a fight seemed to be brewing. What was the problem here?

She didn’t have time to focus, as the black shapes were quickly growing on the horizon. It was strange to see Zith during the daytime, but she didn’t care. They were here, weren’t they? She raised her bow and pulled back carefully, trying to aim at one of the winged monsters. From this distance she probably wouldn’t be able to hit one, but… she didn’t want to sit around. Some of the close range warriors were pacing back and forth on their Striders, eyes locked on the enemy, weapons drawn and at the ready. Glancing at her mentor, she saw that the Drykas had just shot his own arrow, sending it flying smoothly ahead of them. He’d probably hit, knowing the man’s skill. She just had to focus on her own efforts, though.

She found the center of the group, where she was most likely to hit, centered her bow at it… they raised it nearly a foot to make up for the distance. It was all an estimation, to be honest…but she hoped to hit something at least. When she felt that she might have a twenty or thirty percent chance of a hit she released, watching the projectile arc over the heads of her companions and… fall many feet short of their flying attackers. She didn’t even bother to curse, instead quickly drawing and notching another arrow, not wanting to waste any time. The closer they came, the easier they were to hit… but the less time there was before the Zith were on them, close enough to scratch and bite and scream. She fired this one in quick succession, not even bothering to put much effort into aiming. This one actually hit, slamming into a monster’s leg and causing it to falter in its flight. She didn’t kill it, just maim, but the scream she could see on the furry face was more than enough.

Again she drew an arrow and loosed, not moving from her position. As an archer, the biggest danger was other archers. You couldn’t move as well as others and still attack, you had to pause for each shot and aim. However, you were well out of the range of mêlée fighters. Someone from the far front called loudly back in a calm clear voice. ”No archers!” She could almost hear everyone else breathe a sigh of relief. She certainly did. In fact, she couldn’t see the glimmer of steel or iron anywhere… they were probably unarmed. Unarmed Zith weren’t as dangerous as the rare armed ones, but they still had bestial weapons… their sharp claws and heavy wings. She didn’t want one of those near her. She wasn’t going to back down either, it was far too late for that. Instead she simply continued with the constant firing, one arrow after another, waiting until the last moment to stop and prepare for closer fighting.

She shot until the last minute, drawing an arrow and aiming for only a moment before loosing on a Zith that was two meters away. The projectile hit, slamming into the beast’s chest, but it seemed to go unnoticed… the wrong side for the heart, apparently. Oryani was about to drop her bow and scramble for her scimitar when Khal reared, hooves lashing out at the air and catching their attacker in the leg, causing it to hiss even more in pain. She dropped her bow anyways, using both hands to clutch to the grip before her in a desperate attempt to hang on. She could stay on a rearing horse when she was prepared… but she hadn’t been for this. When her Strider slumped to land heavily on the earth again she wrenched out her scimitar, glad that the stallion had the sense to back up to give her time.

The thing tried to slash at her with claws, but she managed to swing her blade up in time to catch it right in time. There was no aiming involved, just pure strength as she twisted and smashed into the appendage. The Zith screamed this time, suddenly turning and flapping away speedily, heading high in the sky in an odd manner. It seemed her arrow was finally being noticed. She watched the thing for a moment, before grinning as another arrow from somewhere slammed into it, sending the creature toppling into the grass below. She whooped in triumph, before facing the rest. She was at the back of the group and mostly unnoticed, which meant it was a wonderful time to start sniping. She searched the ground for her bow… and swore. In the scuffle, and after dropping it… Khal had stepped on it, leaving only splinters of wood where there had once been a weapon. She shouldn’t have dropped it.

Instead, she fingered the blade in her hand, wishing she’d practiced more often with it. She urged Khal forward at a trot, using one hand to grip onto her Yvas, and the other to hold the scimitar at her side. She had never used it on horseback before… there was a first time for everything.

She was about to go help a fellow Drykas when she felt ripping at her back, claws digging into the flesh there. She yelled at the pain, her screams coming at a discord with a horse’s. She twisted so much that she nearly fell out of the saddle, trying to find her attacker. She spotted a Zith landing heavily on the ground, claws covered in blood. She also saw more blood, coating Khal’s hindquarters in deep scratches. Despite the pain throbbing in her shoulders she urged her Strider around, knees doing all the work to direct her companion. She wasn’t attacking this one in revenge for attacking her… it was in revenge for attacking her Strider. She yelled at it, face a mask of fury and determination. She didn’t care if she was hurt, or if she was in pain… she would kill this one.

She kicked her mount into a fast trot, or maybe a gallop… she couldn’t really tell. Strangely the beast didn’t move, a strange tactic that wasn’t explained until… wham. A heavy force hit her from the back, once and for all toppling her out of the saddle. She landed on the ground on her back, all of the air blown out of her lungs from the force. Her vision went black for a moment, just a tick, but it was enough that when she saw again there was a black furred creature in the way, claws and teeth bright and white. She yelled at it, swinging the scimitar which was strangely still in her hands and hitting a few things, hitting something. She was rewarded with a scream, and after a few more random slashes the thing left. She heard a horse scream… Khal… and tried to turn on her side but… her ribs. Gods, her ribs. She gasped at the pain filling her chest, and slumped back down into the grass, teeth clenched to avoid from screaming.

She wanted to see, though. She painfully rolled over onto her side, where she could see the fight going on only a little ways away. A painter Strider, her painted Strider, rearing valiantly and kicking at the flapping thing with wings before it. The Zith backed off, but Khal was taken from the back just as she had, another Zith landing there, teeth biting and claws scratching at all the weak points. The stallion tried desperately to shake the thing off, rearing and kicking, a stray hoof slamming into the first monster’s face and sending it crashing to the ground. They were far enough that Oryani was safe from the blows, but she was close enough to hear the screams and cries. ”Khal…” she muttered, unknown tears streaming down her face. She didn’t want this, she didn’t like this. Her Strider… she had to help her Strider… but every time she tried to sit up pain filled her, and she couldn’t do anything but groan and clench her fists. She was useless.

Instead she watched the painfully slow scene, the stallion slowing, blood streaming down his sides, but still trying to get at the attacker. However, pain and blood loss were too much, and the Strider’s knees buckled, dragging out another faint cry from Oryani, this time ”No…” The pair disappeared below the grass, and she could see nothing… nothing. She rolled onto her back again, staring at the blue sky and wondering why this had happened. She was still alive, it was funny. In fact, it was funny enough that she giggled. She could still tell Khal was alive, she could still hear him, he was there, she’d save him… but… no. There was no sound. All of a sudden there was quiet, silence, except for those sounds far away.

She saw an arrow shoot above her head and wondered where it was going, until a Zith crashed dead only a few feet from her. Oryani lifted her head and stared, saw it twitch a few times before falling still. Did that mean there were other Drykas still alive? Was she not the only one left? She wanted to sit up, to stand up and see… but it hurt too much. She’d already tried that. Instead all she could do was think, and try and ignore the throbbing pain from her ribs and back. All she could do was wait… wait for death or survival. For someone to come and notice her, to see her, and their appearance would decide her fate. Winged and clawed… death for sure. She’d heard Zith took slaves, though. Maybe she’d be enslaved. She wasn’t entirely sure how appealing that was, though. If the person was a Drykas, tattooed and friendly… she’d be saved.

All Is Lost

What felt like an eternity passed as Oryani stared in the sky. The sun was right in her line of sight, and though she tried to avoid looking at it, she could see Syna’s light slowly inching down from the horizon, passing noon by a few bells. It was only when the sun was halfway between noon and the horizon that she felt an urge to get up. She’d almost given up, truly, given up on many things. On someone finding her, on anyone being a live, on getting out of this herself. She couldn’t find a good reason to move, until an image flickered into her mind. Khal. She’d lost everything, including her Strider… but she still wanted to see the stallion.

She pushed herself up into a sitting position, surprisingly finding much less pain than there had been at first. Slowly, carefully, she managed to stand, though wobbled on stiff legs, feeling dizzy and unbalanced. She tried to orient herself, remember where the horse had fallen… but after turning in a half circle… she found him. A huge horse, lying flat on the grass, streaked with blood. You couldn’t even see the wounds where it came from. By now the red liquid was hardening, turning crunchy and dry. The smell was heavy in the air, along with numerous other unpleasant scents, but she’d grown to ignore it by now. She hobbled over to her old companion, vaguely stumbling until she crashed to her knees just by the Strider’s head.

”Oh Khal…” she muttered, feeling, for the first time, tears dripping down her cheeks. Until now, she’d been so out of it that she hadn’t even felt sad. Angry, determined, lost… all of those things. But sad? No… not until she’d seen the limp body of her lifelong friend. She continued to mutter the horse’s name, lifting the huge and heavy head onto her lap and fingering the crusty forelock, stroking the long hairs affectionately. One of her animals was dead. But… she had two. Two animals. Alaril… where had Alaril gone? The bird had disappeared right at the beginning of the fight, to not be seen again. It felt like… the eagle had run away. Abandoned them to die. But she hadn’t died… though her time would probably come soon. She didn’t know if she’d be able to make to civilization in her state in time, without being killed by some stray predator.

She hissed in irritation, angered again by the betrayal of her bird. Eagles were supposed to be brave, courageous predators… now cowards, like this one. But what could Alaril have done? Be ripped to shreds by a Zith? It probably had been safer to fly away, where there were trees and prey and safety. Still… Oryani couldn’t find it in herself to forgive the bird, and wiped the image from her mind, refusing to acknowledge the eagle as a friend or companion. Instead she resumed her moping, half wishing that Khal would sit up suddenly, move, brush her with his nose.

Time passed as she sat there too, though she was brought out of her stupor in a very different way. By a touch. A human touch. Feeling the thing on her shoulder (she hadn’t been paying attention to the motions around her) she spun in surprise, twisting in her seat but still clinging to her Strider. She had a sharp jerk of hope that it was one of her people, another Drykas come to help, but it died as soon as it had come. The man before her was no Drykas, strange smelling and with strange moving markings on his bared left arm. There were no Windmarks to be seen. She stared at him, not understanding where this person had come from. After a few more glances around… she realized there were more people, five or so men and woman of similar appearance… blond, almost white hair, and sharp blue eyes.

The people threw a few jests and comments around about her existence in a foreign language, while Oryani simply sat, mouth agape. She didn’t… understand. How had the people even gotten here? They had no horses to be seen, and no one was stupid enough to walk across the Sea of Grass… or were they? ”Wha….” she finally stuttered, though her word was in Pavi and probably not understandable to them. The first man laughed, catching the tone, and answered the general question in rough, heavy Common.

”’ow’d y’ survive? Zith, ‘orses… heh.. Much blood. But yer alive… so y’ll come with us.” Oryani frowned in confused anger… what if she didn’t want to come with them? They couldn’t make her. The man dragged her up from under the elbows, but once she was standing she ripped away, stumbling on weak legs and almost falling until he caught her. ”No,” she snapped, feeling instantly that she didn’t like these people, and she didn’t want to go with them. She felt a little like a child in that demand, a child who wanted to stay home with a stuffed horse or bear and not leave its bedroll. A few people laughed at her exclamation, and she scowled at them, just creating more noise.

”Y’don’t understand… You will come.” The last was said hard, and in proper common, the words clearer than they had been before. She stared at him, not understanding, before it finally dawned on her. Slavery. They wanted to enslave her. They wanted to enslave her. She stared, eyes wide in surprise, before they darkened in a glare. She was a Drykas, though her Strider was gone… she had pride and she was not going to be enslaved… she’d rather die than do that, than serve and submit, and… no.

She repeated this thought, echoing her earlier words. ”No.” She told him, and when two others tried to grab her and drag her forward she ripped away from them, stumbling back further. She tripped over one of the dead Zith, stumbling over wings and limbs and landing hard on her tailbone. She let out a gasp of pain, ribs sending sharp signals of distress up her chest. The two men who’d attempted to grab her moved forward at an order, and one tried to tie her hands behind her back with a long length of cord. She struggled, despite the other one trying to hold her still, until a second sharp order was heard. She glanced around in confusion, wanting an explanation, until… blackness. The world went dark with pain.

Riding +1
Weapon: Bow +2
Weapon: Scimitar +1
  • Being struck from behind
  • Bow: adjusting elevation for distant targets
  • Falling for a trap
  • Svefra: takers of slaves
  • Witnessing the death of one's Strider
  • Zith: worse than any animal predator

Injury to back: Gashes from Zith claws across Oryani's upper back. Without medical aid, the gashes will become gradually less sensitive over the first two weeks, largely heal over in three more weeks, and take another six weeks for the scar tissue to finish strengthening. Without physical therapy, she will lose some ability to bend down and to reach forward (10%). Overexertion during the healing period will cause further damage. Medical attention can cut the first two recovery phases in half. If Oryani gets physical therapy in the future, her full range of motion can be restored, assuming no further injury.

Injury to ribs: One cracked and two bruised ribs from being tackled off her horse. Breathing will be painful over the first week; stretching, exertion, and sudden deep breaths or coughing may cause twinges of pain for an additional week. It will take four weeks for the injury to fully heal, but there will be no lasting effects provided no further damage is done. Medical attention can shave a week off the recovery time.
