Aoren sat quietly at his desk reviewing materials given to him by his professor at the University. It was only fitting given that he had been a student there. He was studying more principles concerning the manipulation of various forms of djed. There had been a time where he might have considered such things the whims of fancy or the stuff of tales but no longer. Though he had only been a student at the University for a short time he had learned more under the instruction of Professor Agatha Memry than he had his entire education with his old mentor. He leaned back in his chair as he reviewed the parchment in front of him.

A knock on the door interrupted his studies. He looked up from his materials looking at the wooden door as if he might have heard something strange. He certainly hadn’t expected a visitor. He hardly knew anyone in Zeltiva. Among those he did know he hadn’t told any of them where he lived though he supposed it wouldn’t be hard to find out. Isikai perked up from where he lay upon Aoren’s bed. The dog gave a low growl but Aoren quieted him with a calming gesture.

Easy, boy.” Another knock on the door had Aoren rising from his chair striding over to it. He opened the door somewhat cautiously. Standing in front of him was a brown haired young man wearing the garb of what appeared to be a Zeltivan official.

Can I help you?” The young man gave Aoren a polite nod.

Healer Skycrown?” Aoren relaxed slightly at being addressed in such a manner. While it was a bit formal and not something he was accustomed to he opened his door to welcome the messenger.

I am Aoren Skycrown, yes.” The young man nodded extending to Aoren a stack of missives. The Drykas man blinked at them.

These are petitions for your aid from the Lord of Council’s office. As you are the Healer registered with the City of Zeltiva these are the tasks forwarded to your hands.” Aoren accepted the stack of missives from the messenger. As soon as he took them the young man gave Aoren a bow taking his leave. With the letters in hand Aoren closed his door going back to his desk. He sat down sifting through them. There had to be at least a dozen requests in his hands. Quietly he opened the first of them reading through the request. It was that of a mother pleading for assistance for her daughter who had been sick with fever for several days. The next was a letter from a man who had fallen ill with a stomach sickness. After that was a woman who was beset with rashes of unknown origin.

As he read through all of them there was a single thing that Aoren noticed as a common trend among the requests: few of these people possessed any means of paying for the medicines they would need. It was no wonder they had been forwarded to him. Such a thing did not bother Aoren in the slightest. He had not offered his gifts as a Healer of Rak’keli to the city expecting to become a figure of great wealth. Taking a deep breath he rose from his chair prepared to spend the day tending to the needs set before him. Stretching he took a deep breath before releasing it slowly. He turned from the window to look at his dog. Walking over Aoren gently ran his fingers through Isikai’s soft fur.

Come on, boy. We’ve got work to do.

Aoren knocked on the door of a small cottage that looked to be in need of some repairs. It had taken him the better part of a bell to find the residence of the mother begging to assistance on behalf of her daughter. He was dressed simply wearing the casual clothes of a humble traveler. His quarterstaff in hand and Isikai at his side he looked more suited to be journeying through the woods than tending to the people. When the door opened a very tired looking woman presented herself to Aoren. She peered out from behind the door, caution in her eyes and stress in her demeanor. He gave the woman a bow. As he did the sunlight reflected off of the opalescent mark shining upon the right side of his face.

Good morning, ma’am. Are you Katherine?” Her eyes came to rest on the swirling sigil that marked Aoren as a Healer and immediately relief washed over her form. She opened the door wide, stepped out and threw her arms around the Drykas man catching him slightly off guard. The woman gave him a tight hug. Isikai quirked his head at the woman but made no advance upon her beyond a curious whine.

Thank the Goddess.” When she drew back there were unshed tears in her eyes. “Thank you for coming. Please, come inside. Please.

Aoren allowed himself to be ushered inside the cottage. He dipped his head to avoid hitting a low hanging beam from the ceiling. Once inside he was greeted to the sight of the simplest of homes. Well used, wooden furniture covered in blankets that had seen many winters. An open larder, a kettle steaming on the cast iron stove. It was a single room cottage. Aoren counted three beds in all. In the largest bed lay a very pale little girl with hair the color of honey. Immediately a gentleness entered Aoren’s heart upon seeing the small child so weak with sickness.

How long has she been sick?” The girl’s mother retrieved a strip of cloth which she dipped into a bucket of water. She dabbed at the little girl’s forehead with a tired sigh.

Four days. Her fever refuses to break and it just keeps getting worse. We haven’t the money to purchase fancy medicines. I’ve had to make do with what I can fashion from herbs.” Aoren nodded. He came to stand next to the bed.

May I?” Katherine nodded. Aoren rest his staff against the wall beside the bed. He seated himself on a stool that Katherine offered him. He gave the woman a nod of thanks before getting to work. Isikai seated himself right next to Aoren. The dog’s gaze followed the concerned mother around the room. She gave Isikai a worried glance but after seeing that he was a rather calm dog she relaxed ever so slightly. Firstly Aoren called upon the powers of his djed bringing it to the forefront of his vision. With a blink of his eyes he summoned his Auristics. The aura of the little girl slowly came into focus for him as Aoren was still grasping the very basics of the magic. Still, his peek into her aura revealed a few things to him upon careful study.

Gently he hovered a hand over the little girl’s brow focusing on attuning his own aura to hers. The only way he was going to glean any useful information about her possible condition through Auristics was by harmonizing his aura with hers. Carefully he focused on bringing his aura into balance with the girl’s. It took a few moments of concentration but after that time had passed several things revealed themselves to Aoren.

The most prevalent thing Aoren felt as he gazed at her aura was an uncomfortable heat. It registered with the Drykas man that this was her fever reflected in what he could perceive with his magic. The second thing that stood out was the overwhelming amount of discomfort the little girl felt. She was in pain. She was suffering. It made Aoren’s heart tighten in his chest and his urge to alleviate her suffering immediately. Carefully he released his hold upon the powers of Auristics with a few blinks of his eyes.

Well?” He looked up. Katherine was staring at him anxiously. He gave her a kind smile.

I can break her fever and nudge her along the road to recovery. She will still need rest and careful attention for a day or two afterwards.” A look of relief came over the concerned mother’s face. She nodded vigorously. Aoren knew just from her expression that she would follow his advice religiously. Taking a steady breath Aoren opened himself up to the soothing powers of Rak’keli. Through the mark on his face he felt the peace and strength that radiated from the Goddess. The mark shone brightly as the divine might of Rak’keli flowed from Aoren into the ailing girl.

Aoren maintained his gentle touch upon the girl’s brow for only a few moments. When the light of the Goddess of Healing faded he knew with all certainty that what could be done, had. To witness this Aoren once again utilized the powers of auristics. He closed his eyes focusing on his djed before bringing it again to the forefront of his vision. The difference in the little girl’s aura was immediate. Aoren no longer felt the disturbing heat radiating from her aura. He studied her aura for a few moments doing what he could to discern if there were anything else that could possibly be wrong with her. After a few careful minutes of study though he could yield nothing from the girl’s aura besides a feeling of immense tiredness.

Releasing his hold on his magic he rose from the stool gently brushing the girl’s hair away from her face. Grasping his quarterstaff he used it to steady himself. As he was still very much a novice in the use of Auristics even the smallest of uses was taxing on his strength. He gave the mother a kind smile. Isikai padded up to the woman who tentatively pat him on the head after he gave her hand a sniff and a nudge.

Her fever is broken.” Katherine walked up to her daughter giving the sleeping girl a kiss on the forehead before smoothing back her hair. As she did that Aoren reached into the small coin purse he kept with him. He withdrew a single gold miza out of the five he usually carried with him. As Katherine escorted him to the door he reached out taking her hand then pressed the coin into her palm.

Oh…I cannot—“ Aoren cut her off with a shake of his head.

Go to the market when you can. Use it to purchase some Lilian Root Tea. It will soothe nerves and promote calmness. It will help you and your daughter to get some much needed rest.” Katherine stared into Aoren’s eyes before looking down at the coin in her palm. She squeezed her hand shut. When she raised her head she looked as if she were about to cry. Stepping forward she once again gave Aoren an unexpected hug. He gently, if a little awkwardly, pat her on the back before she released him.

How can we repay you?” Aoren shook his head.

There is no need.” With that she burst into tears once again throwing her arms around Aoren hugging him tightly. He was a little more prepared this time and returned the hug gently until the woman collected herself. She took his free hand grasping it firmly.

Goddess bless you, Healer. Goddess bless you.” Aoren gave her a polite bow before taking his leave of the cottage. Isikai gently nudged his leg staring up at the Drykas man inquisitively.

What?” The dog gave a low whine that was a mix between a grumble and a bark. Aoren rolled his eyes as they made their way away from the cottage.

Now you want a hug too?” Isikai barked jumping up to paw at Aoren’s leg. He almost toppled over at the suddenness of having a very large dog jump up onto him but he steadied himself using his staff. Giving his dog a mock agitated sigh he ruffled the fur atop Isikai’s head.

Okay, I guess you deserve a hug too.” Kneeling down he spread his arms wide and before he knew it Isikai was all over him. The friendliness made Aoren smile. He wrapped his arms around Isikai hugging the dog tightly. Isikai really was living up to his name. Aoren trusted in his canine companion completely. It was hard to imagine life before him and the Drykas man certainly had no intention of imagining life without him for a long time to come. With a final pat on his dog’s head Aoren stood up.

Now let’s go get some food. I’m hungry.

Isikai barked darting ahead a few paces. It was going to be a busy day of tending to those in need.

It was going to be a good day.
