2nd Summer 514AV

The heat was proving too much for the dancer. Sleeping was a difficult and unbearable activity right now. No matter how many times she tossed and turned, flipped her pillow over or kicked away her bed coverings, her skin remained uncomfortably clammy with sweat. It didn't help that her bed was damp with it either. It was not a pleasant sleeping place at all. She'd stripped naked, unable to bear the feel of cloth anywhere on her person but that hadn't helped either. It meant that she was inclined to get chilly and cover herself with the bed clothes, only to overheat almost immediately after doing so. At one point, Caela rose and sluiced water over her body in an effort to cool herself but the relief it provided was fleeting and she had to dry off again before she got back into bed. Just because her sleeping area was damp didn't mean that she wanted to make it truly wet.

There was no rest to be had in that stuffy room that would no doubt reek of sweat in the next day or so if this heat persisted. Just trying to sleep there made her feel filthy, like she needed a bath but just the idea made her feel more hot. A bath meant going to the Hot Springs and that idea was not a pleasant one right now. If only there was some way to bathe in cold water. Immersing herself in cold water for awhile would certainly cool her down. But what could she do? There was nowhere that she could go at this time of night that would offer some relief except... There was cold water around the Docks. There wouldn't be many around there at this time of night so she shouldn't be in danger of being attacked. She didn't have to swim in it either, just hide her clothes somewhere and take a dip. It might just be worth it.

Unsticking herself from her bed, the young woman dressed lightly, not bothering with her undergarments which would only be another unwelcome layer. She made do with a blouse and a light pair of pants and some slipper shoes. The shoes weren't the most sensible thing to walk around in but she couldn't bear the idea of wearing anything heavier. Ensuring that her possessions were hidden, just in case someone came in snooping around, the young woman stepped outside her quarters. The air outside wasn't much of an improvement from inside but it was an improvement. There was some circulation of air in the city even though the movement was sluggish. It'd probably be cooler in a more open area, somewhere that would get a bit of a breeze from the water.

As she walked she kept her head firmly down, eyes fixed on the ground a few feet in front of her. It helped to prevent her from stepping on anything that would slice through her shoes and into her feet but it also meant that she would be less likely to get into trouble. If she looked like she was minding her own business then she was more likely to be left alone. If she looked openly around her then she was more likely to get involved in someone else's business which was never good. Just moving through the less travelled areas was inviting trouble, particularly at this time of night so Caela was sticking to the main thoroughfares as much as possible. They weren't trouble free either but they were more populated. A group of people made her feel more at ease usually. A group was usually just made up of ordinary people going about their business, not necessarily gang members.

There were freelance prostitutes, not connected with Sunberth's higher class establishments, who were plying their trade under Leth's gaze. Most of them were older women, the younger ones already snapped up by the night time customers. She glanced at them briefly but didn't allow her gaze to linger. She didn't want to be reminded of her mother right now. Prostitutes weren't the only ones roaming the streets at this late bell. There were drunken men, late night gamblers and even a beggar or two who'd decided that now would be the most profitable time. Fleeting glances allowed her to take everything in while keeping her nose clean in the process.

As she approached the Docks, a cool breeze assailed her, clearing her head a little and taking her mind off the unbearable swelter for now. The necessity to avoid certain gang controlled areas of the waterside came to mind and so she steered clear of them, heading to a dock that was frequently used. Ships were docked along it, dimly lit where sailors had been left to guard it. They were no doubt playing cards, drink fuelled laughter issuing from the decks. It was not a gang controlled area but that didn't mean that it was safer. If the men here saw her then she was likely to run into trouble. There was no one as bold as a drunk sailor and so she'd have to proceed carefully.

Moving as quietly as she could to the end of the dock, the dancer kept an eye on the ships that she passed. Her shadow was thrown over certain areas, almost seeming to flicker in the lighting. She could only hope that nobody noticed. She reached her goal, a shadowy region just out of range of lamp light at the very end of the dock, without incident. Crouching in the shadow and surveying the way she'd come she saw no sign of any sailors coming out to investigate. Feeling more at ease, she undressed and left her clothes in shadow before perching on the very edge of the dock. Her feet touched the water, jerking away from the shock of cold water. She hadn't thought that it would be that cold. Apparently, this heat spell hadn't improved the temperature of the water yet. Within a few chimes she'd be like an ice block.

It'd be worth it. Just a chime or two and then she'd be grateful for the heat in the air once she got out. No point going back to the stuffiness and restlessness that her room promised. She just had to put up with it for a little while and it would be worth it. It wouldn't be that cold anyway, not after she got used to it. Gripping the edge of the dock, she slid herself as quickly and quietly as she could into the water.

Her body wanted to jerk in several directions at once but it was also trying to shiver. Immersing her entire body in the cold water at once had been a shock to her system. All of her was cold. She gasped, hands releasing the dockside in her confusion allowing all of her to slip into the water. The shriek that would have issued from her mouth was drowned into gurgling and spluttering as her head dipped under the water and resurfaced again. The dancer's hands scrabbled desperately for the wood again, searching for something to anchor her before she slipped into the water. The amount of noise she must be making with her scrabbling and coughing didn't occur to her. The fact that she was trying to remain hidden wasn't her greatest worry when she thought that she was drowning. She wasn't actually drowning but she wasn't aware of that when she wasn't even thinking straight. Over her own panting she heard the voices though and that brought it back to the forefront of her mind.

"Did you 'ear tha'? Wha' was it, a fish?"

"Big fish tha'!" laughed a second voice in answer to the first.

The blonde shrank down, trying to hide too low for them to see if they chose to investigate. She could hear them moving about on the nearest ship, footsteps ringing on the deck. Please don't see me. Please don't see me," she prayed, eyes closed tightly as she tried to will them not to find her.

"I don' see not'in. Maybe you imagined it," a new voice called. She had no idea how many of them were on the ship but it didn't matter. She was safe. Thank the gods! Someone seems to like me, she thought, breathing a sigh of relief. It was a tad premature as feet landed on the dock, sending vibrations through the boards that she was gripping. A new set of feet, moving in she didn't know what direction. Eyes opened, peering over the edge to try to get a glimpse of the men and to see if they were heading in her direction. They were scanning the water looking for someone, looking for her. Feet approached the end of the dock even as a voice rose in denial of anything being there.

The girl couldn't breathe, expecting at any moment to be discovered. Her fingers were beginning to cramp from a combination of cold and being pressed too hard into the dock. Her body was also trembling beneath the water, the surface rippling from her body's vibrations. She didn't know whether it was the top of her head he saw or the ripples but the sailor who had walked down this far made a beeline straight for her.

"'Ere look at this!" he called, approaching the edge to get a better look. Even if he somehow didn't see her, he was bound to see her clothes. She was trapped, totally and helplessly trapped. The tremors increased, fear making her body tremble violently. Her hands slipped from their perch making her begin to drift. Swimming wasn't something that she'd ever really learned per we but she understood that she needed to move herself around with her limbs. Legs kicking under the water she felt herself tipping, suddenly off balanced and automatically used her arms to try to right herself. They swung back and forth, splashing up and sinking under the water. She was certainly visible now.

She could get a good view of the man who had alerted the others to her presence, the ones now stomping towards him. He was only young, younger than her probably. His mouth was wide open, his head turned in her direction. He seemed to be staring right at her. It shouldn't have been bright enough for them to see each other, the lamp light didn't reach that far, but Leth's gaze was no longer clouded. When he had emerged, she didn't know but his timing was terrible. He shone on the young woman like a spotlight, cold white light reflecting on her hair. She was like a beacon in the water, her hair increasing her visibility.

As they stared at each other, his companions reached his side and he finally found his voice. Pointing to her in the water, he exclaimed, "Cor! There's a girl in the water an' she's got no clothes on!" His voice was gleeful. Apparently he was pleased to have discovered what he had. There was nothing she could do. She couldn't swim away, she couldn't swim towards them, she could only float a few feet from them and move her arms so she didn't tip over. She couldn't even cover herself, she was totally reliant on the water to hide her. She was totally petched!

How could she get out of this? She couldn't swim around to a different place and get out and even if she could, she wouldn't have any clothes. There was an option but it wasn't one that she was willing to consider right now. There was no way that she was going to ask them to help her out of the water. A situation like that could only end badly for her but then her current situation wasn't much better. She couldn't stay in the water much longer either. Caela was absolutely freezing and her teeth were starting to chatter but there was nothing she could do. She was stuck.

"'Ere! Do you think it's one o' those Konti?" a big burly sailor asked his companions. The youth managed to tear his gaze away from her long enough to gape at his companion. "Aren't they the ones tha' are 'alf fish?" he asked, tone warring through disgust and fascination. The last sailor, a short man added his two coppers to the conversation.

"I 'ought they were supposed to be all scaly like a fish. She don't look scaly, she just looks naked." His companions laughed at that, watching Caela to what she'd do. "'Ow'd she get over 'ere anyway? Did she swim out to 'ere?" Shorty asked his companions. They hadn't seen her clothes yet but it would only be a matter of time. Sure enough Burly pointed them out. He picked them up, going through them and laughed at what he found, no doubt amused to find her undergarments absent. The desire to be elsewhere right now was a strong one. Sticky restlessness might not be comfortable but it was certainly very appealing right now. If only she could turn back the clock.

"Y'all righ' out there, lass? Decide to go fer a late nigh' swim, did ya?" Shorty called to her. "Ain't it a bit nippy in tha' water?" Caela considered remaining silent. Maybe they'd get bored and leave her alone. Could she afford to wait that long though? She was already freezing cold and she'd heard that people could die from being cold.

"I was t-trying to c-cool down. C-couldn't sleep. T-too warm," she stuttered. Her lips felt huge, swollen, numb. It was difficult to make her jaw move the way she wanted as well so that everything she said was a strain to make coherent. She was getting far too cold and these men didn't look like they were going to leave anytime soon. There was no way that she was going to ask them for help, no siree. Wasn't going to happen. She'd rather die first, or at least that's what she told herself.

"Say you're cool enough now. 'Ow long you been in there?" Shorty asked. "T-too long," she chattered back but she wasn't sure that he heard her because someone had yelled down the dock at him and his shipmates. It seemed that her being in the water was likely to attract more sailors. She didn't want anymore spectators to her misery and humiliation. That was the very last thing that she wanted. Shorty yelled back that they should mind their own business, calling out threats while drawing his knife for emphasis. Whether he had some sort of well known reputation for fighting or whether the threats did it, whoever had been curious decided that they had better things to be concerning himself with than whatever was going on at the bottom of the dock.

"Ya'll freeze if ya stay in there. Come 'ere," Burly told her. She didn't like his tone. She would have shrank back but she couldn't. Instead she shook her head emphatically. Swinging her arms in front of her and kicking her legs forward, she managed to move a little way away from them but that didn't help her. She still had no way of getting back to dry land and treading water wasn't getting her anywhere. The last thing that the blonde wanted to do was comply with Burly's demands. He certainly wasn't going to help her out of kindness. The youth seemed eager to get her out of the water and she could imagine why. Shorty's reaction was different though and she couldn't interpret it.

"Don' be like tha', lass. Come 'ere an' we'll 'elp ya out." Burly was still trying to tempt her out of the water but it wasn't working. The boy was eager to back his companion up though, making what she knew were empty promises about her safety if she came to them. Even if she could have she wouldn't have approached them. As she watched though, Shorty said something to the youngest sailor and pointed him in the direction of the ship. He began to protest but obviously thought better of it because he ran off in the direction of the docked ship. He returned a chime later with what looked like a blanket, spreading it wide and grinning at her. No, still wasn't in any way tempting. Shorty pulled the blanket away from him and told him to turn around. He gaped back at him and Caela's reaction would have been the same if her teeth weren't still on the move. He repeated it again and said the same to Burly. Shorty winked at her before he had a heated argument with his shipmates. When the other two backed down, it became clear that Shorty was feared. He seemed willing to help her but she had no idea why. He was the best chance that she'd got though.

"'Ere now, lass. 'Fore you freeze," Shorty told her, glancing behind him to make sure that the other two still had their backs turned. She shook her head. "'Ere now, none o' tha'. These two won't do nothin' to ya." She wasn't refusing though, she just couldn't do what he was asking her to do. There was no way for her to get back.

"I can't swim." That revelation seemed to make him grow thoughtful for a moment, perhaps rethinking the situation. "'Haps you can't. You ain't tha' far out though, jus' get yerself moving this way. Kick out behind ya, use your arms. You were able to get out there so ya can get back alri'." He did have a very good point. She had gotten herself away from the dock in the first place so why not do the reverse to get herself back. The dancer did what he said, paddling slowly across the water. It took longer than it should have but with a final kick she was able to get her fingertips in reach of the wood. Clawing at the edge, she managed to get a grip an drag herself closer by degrees. The only problem was getting back onto the dock. Shorty had given her room to drag her way back onto it but that didn't mean that it would be easy.

Stretching her arms out, she managed to get her elbows onto the wooden surface but it was too slippery. She was bringing the water with her and it wasn't making things any easier for her. Her fingers scrabbled for an edge but she slipped back down into the water. Again she tried to climb onto it, trying to propel her body up as high as she could. All she succeeded in doing was whacking her self in the chest on the edge and grazing her elbows. Shorty seemed to have perceived her struggle because he dropped the blanket to one side and knelt down to try to help her up. The dancer shrank back a little, an arm crossing her chest protectively. Shorty only snorted and murmured, "Seen it all before, lass," as grabbed an elbow and pulled.

Although she resented the contact, she didn't complain. The young woman needed the help and this was the only way out. Between the two of them, they managed to get her out, shivering violently at the contact of warmer air. Her fingers found the blanket and pulled her around her but not before she discovered that the youth was watching her over Shorty's shoulder. His head whipped back to its normal position when Shorty followed the direction of her gaze but she was sure that he'd seen enough. Her face would have burned crimson if she'd had any heat left in it. Her gaze turned to Shorty who was now watching her and wondered what was going to happen now. She couldn't see it being something good.

Dip in the Nip

Postby Caela Dorin on June 30th, 2014, 3:56 pm

There were certain situations that Caela had never imagined herself getting into. She had never considered that she would be caught skinny dipping by a bunch of sailors. Hadn't thought that she would require the help of said sailors. One of the last things she would have expected was to be hauled naked onto a dock and be left at the mercy of three sailors with nothing between them but a thin blanket. It was a situation that was making her incredibly nervous. She couldn't just run away even if she could get past them. Her muscles were being very uncooperative. They seemed to be outside of her control, spasming and shuddering when she least expected them to. There would be no running away because her body wouldn't let her. Cold was not having a good effect on it an she was sure that she'd become sick after this.

At least she was starting to warm up a little now though. The warm air that she had so resented not so long ago was now welcome against her chilled skin. The slight breeze that had brought such small relief earlier now became like a gust of icy wind, battering against her and bringing on a new wave of shuddering. Maybe it was her chilled state that kept the sailors from doing anything immediately. They just watched her for a chime or two until she wasn't shivering quite as violently then Shorty offered her a hand to help her to her feet. Clutching her blanket to her tightly, she took it and managed to stand on wobbly legs.

As soon as she was up, she withdrew her hand from the sailor's and used it to pull the blanket even more tightly around herself. The boy seemed to find that funny, maybe because he'd already gotten a glimpse of what was beneath it. The dancer looked away from him, unwilling to see the lust that would join the amusement in his face. It still wasn't quite bright enough to see their eyes but she could see enough of their faces to pick up basic expressions. It wasn't something that she wanted to examine though, their faces. They weren't likely to be kind. She could feel them watching her, even without looking up at them. The blanket left her legs exposed from a little above the knees and left her collarbones bare as well. There wasn't much for them to see but they were probably imagining the rest of her based on what they could see, taking in the sight of her healthy, smooth skin.

"Wha' we gonna do with 'er?" Burly rumbled, grinning at her, revealing that he was missing a number of teeth. Looking at his expression, she'd rather take her chances back in the water. Maybe they'd have a fight over her and she could make a run for it in the confusion. For now, they were blocking her path and were watching her too closely not to notice an escape attempt.

"Wha' d'ya mean, we?" Shorty shot back, glaring at him. "You two ain't doing nothin' with 'er, ya 'ear? So that's tha'. The two of ye can go back to yer cards and mind yer own business." Burly and the boy exchanged glances and then both started to argue.

"Ye can't do tha' to us!"

"No' every day a naked girl lands next our ship!"

"Ye can' jus' let 'er go!"

"Let us 'ave our fun!"

Shorty cut off the argument by smacking the boy in the side of the head. "Enough of yer belly achin', ye' bilge rats or I'll 'ave your 'ides. You two ain't good for nowt 'cept sittin' on yer arses so go an' do it," he snarled, taking out a wicked looking knife and slashing the air between them. A moment of rebellion perhaps as they both remained before first the boy and then Burly left in the direction of the ship, grumbling and cursing Shorty. Once they were out of sight, Shorty turned back to her and smiled.

"Now lass, I'm sure ye've learned yer lesson. No swimmin' wi' no clothes on 'round sailors. Risky business tha' but I'm sure ye realised tha'. Didn't come all the way down 'ere to a dark spo' jus' for the hai of it," he laughed. He bent to pick up her clothes and handed them to her. "You dry yerself off an' get dressed 'fore you catch your death an' I'll make sure no'un comes down." She took her clothing from him and was surprised when he turned his back to give her some privacy. The dancer had no idea why he was helping her out once more but she wasn't going to turn down the offer. Hastily, she rubbed the blanket over her skin, shuddering as new areas became exposed to the air. Once she was reasonably dry, she slipped her clothes back on and buttoned the blouse up as quickly as she could with numb fingers.

Once she was all right, she couldn't help but ask. "Why did you help me? I mean obviously those two listen to you and if you'd said nothing then they would have... taken advantage of the situation. So why?" she asked him straight out, standing in front of him to hand the blanket to him.

"I 'ave a daughter 'bout yer age. In Zeltiva. I don' see 'er as much as I oughta wha' wi' the sailing an' 'at but I could see 'er in the same situation an' I couldn't let it 'appen to ye," Shorty explained. "Now get back 'ome, lass 'fore you get in more trouble. Go on." He jerked his head in the direction of the city. She murmured a soft thank you and moved away quickly, still shivering despite being considerably drier. She'd be glad to get back to her room and warm herself up again. Hopefully she wouldn't end up too sick because of this whole incident although there was no guarantee that she'd get sick at all. With her luck though, she could imagine how this would end for her.
