Sarina was following someone. That seemed to be all she did now a days but this time it was a bit different. This time she was following a pycon. Sarina had only encountered someone from the pycon race a few times before and the tiny clay race had always interested her. They also greatly annoyed her. Them being a race of entirely different forms and shapes she had a hard time reading their movements so they were a bit too unpredictable for her liking. The reason she was following the elusive one was because of a careless mistake.
A few bells earlier she had been following a man around, who was much easier to follow. She was trailing him because she had reason to believe a ring he wore on his left hand had magical properties. Sarina was, like the majority of Sunberthians, against those that practiced magic, mainly because of the advantage it gave people over her. Despite this she wasn’t against having a magical item if it was able to benefit her. While she was following him she had heard him saying that he would be getting a tattoo done by a pycon. Having found that an unusual bit of information she, had remembered it which, as it turned out, was lucky. After losing track of the man she decided to find the pycon tattoo artist and have him lead her to the man she was looking for. Finding the pycon was a bit difficult. She hadn’t seen many pycons in Sunberth at all so she thought it might be easier but it turned out the little clay lizard was quite good at hiding.
She had only stumble across him by accident having seen him scurrying by down an alley way. After seeing him she had immediately started following him, making sure to keep her distance as not to let him notice her. Sarina couldn’t even guess where the lizard was going as he scurried along in seemingly random directions, causing her to almost think he knew Sarina was there and was trying to throw her off.
Suddenly, as Sarina was hiding behind the corner of a building she heard the clay lizard’s feet stop moving. Why had he stopped? Her question was quickly answered by a man’s voice in the alley way the pycon had gone down.
“Hello little lizard. . . I suppose I better help you carry that gold of yours huh?” Great, Sarina thought exasperatedly as carefully glanced around the corner The lizard is being mugged. Suddenly, she noticed another man, this one carrying a club like weapon walking strait towards her down the street she was on. Sliding along the wall she back tracked a bit until she had turned down another alley way so the man couldn’t see her. She hopped he hadn’t noticed her and if he had he would have better thing to do than attack her. Wrapping her cloak tighter around her, she peeked around the corner. The man was standing at the end of the alley way the lizard had gone down. He was walking rather slowly into the alley way with his club that, now that Sarina could see it better looked a bit like a table leg. Likely he was there to cut off the escape of the tattoo artist. Sarina thought that the pycon, despite his size could probably defend himself. No one could survive in Sunberth for long without being able to day that much. Her thoughts were filled with doubt when she heard the lizard say in a surprisingly low voice:
“I haven’t been paid yet. I have no Gold Miza’s on me. . .” Even if the pycon could fight he would have to be exceedingly talented to take on two full grown men so Sarina doubted he could get away without losing. She considered just letting the lizard get mugged, he would have less money, not her problem and he would be even more likely to do the tattoo for the man she was looking for. The only problem would be if the lizard got injured and he couldn’t get do the tattoo or if the men took his tattoo kit.
She didn’t have a chance to come to her decision before the man in the alley way made it for her. He laughed saying, “Guess we can sell you on the market then.” If the lizard was sold there was no way he could possibly lead her to the person she was following so she knew she would need to step in. She cautiously stepped back into the alley way she had been in before the who she had hid from was not far enough down the intersecting alley way that he couldn’t see her.
As she did she assessed the two men determining her situation. One of them had a large club making him probably a stronger man with slower movements and judging by the fact his club was a table leg, less intelligence. The other man, from what she could see of him in the shadowy alleyway, looked like he had a knife of some sort. The man with the club would be better to fight with her bare hands but the one with the knife seemed better fight with her Tamo Dagger so she would have to fight them individually, not that she thought she could take them on at the same time anyway. She also had the benefit of surprise. If she could take out the club man in a single blow from behind it would make the fight a lot easier. She knew she couldn’t count on the small lizard for any help but the narrow alley was good. It would at least let the men only be able to attack her one at a time. She also needed an excuse for why she was even there and saving the lizard. Deciding she was going to make up a lie about why she needed to find the man without him knowing she was looking for him she began her plan.
Taking out her Tamo Daggers but keeping them sheathed together so they were a sort of stick, she crept up behind the club man. Suddenly she realized she had made a horrible mistake. The man with the knife was facing the opposite direction and so while she was hidden from the clubbed man the knife one could see her perfectly.
“Oi, Jeff, behind you!” The knifed man called. The man with the table leg, who name was presumably Jeff, spun around swinging his club. Sarina ducked narrowly missing getting her face smashed in and rolled under the man’s arms so that she was behind him but also between the two men.
Quickly popping up Sarina dropped her cloak on the ground next to the pycon. “Lizard, it’s your lucky day!” She glanced down at the clay lizard. Returning her narrowing eyes to the two thugs, she said, “Unfortunately I can’t say the same for you two.” Jeff had turned around by now and was swinging his club at Sarina. She ducked and maneuvered herself so her back was once again facing the open alley way. The last thing she needed was to be stabbed in the back by a common mugger.
Unfortunately Jeff was faster to turn around than Sarina had expected and hit her square in the right shoulder sending her into the nearby wall. Her Tamo Daggers flew out of hand and hit the ground behind the man. Her shoulder hurt, it might have been dislocated, and she wasn’t sure. What she did know as she regained her footing was she needed get to get her daggers back if she was going to beat the man with the knife.
