Fall 50, 514 AV
Today Valerius was working on his own rather than assisting Doctor Alzelin. The doctor and Valerius aunt Amanda were working on a very complicated experiment. Amanda – who was just a few years older than her nephew – had insisted that he didn’t have enough experience yet. She had ordered him to treat a few Kelvic with minor health problems instead and make sure that all the cages were clean. For that she had allowed him an assistant, a sallow faced young man who clearly didn’t seem to be any happier about shoveling Kelvic excrements than Valerius had been a few seasons ago.
Valerius wordlessly handed a bag to the young man and then proceeded to fill it with all the things he thought he might need for his work: clean bandages, a bottle of alcohol to disinfect wounds, salves, something to reduce pain, needles, some thread and something to extract teeth with, although he sincerely hoped that he didn’t have to do that. The doctor had showed him how you extracted teeth a while ago, but it was one of Valerius’ least favourite parts of the job.
Most of the creatures had never heard of dental hygiene, unlike Valerius who meticulously cleaned his teeth two to three times a day, they didn’t understand it when he explained it, and they were prone to biting people when they were afraid or angry.
Once the bag was filled, Valerius took it back and then handed a bucket of water, a mop and some rags to him, again without saying a word (he had never been interested in small talk and had no idea what he should talk about to somebody that shovelled Kelvic excrements for a living anyway), and then he gave him a sign to follow him. The man made a face, but followed Valerius to where the Kelvic were kept.
