Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

She could officially say it now. This year sucked and she could not wait for it to be over. She had to admit, it started out as a good year when Nathaniel was brought into her life. Joliece thought her life was finally complete. But after Nathaniel was adopted, Luise fell ill and died horribly. Now, the konti became a widow owner of a shop she had no clue how to run. It was her husband’s profession, not hers and because of this, the shop was almost driven into the ground. By her. Joliece thought she made the right choice when she sold the shop and decided she would move to Riverfall (as a free woman) and fulfill her dreams and career choice. She just knew that becoming an Auristic, possibly opening her own shop, in Riverfall would help her support her family as a single mother. This idea was almost killed when a zith kidnapped her and her sons but then revived when the Akalaks saved her… and again, smashed when they told her she would have to pay them with her own life.

Spring of 515, come soon, was a thought she had often. The new year would help her forget. She prayed to the gods that the new year will bring much happiness. Not just for her but her sons. Both have been through just as much as her and she could not bear to see them so depressed. Especially her half-isur son, Lynis.

He loved Luise just as much as she did and cared for the family just as much as she did. Unlike little Nathaniel, Lynis understood what was going on around them and did not like it. He did not like his father was dead and he did not like that his mother would have children for strange men.

“Lynis, make sure your brother is dressed in proper attire. It’s cold out there and I do not want either of you to get sick. I don’t know where the healers stay here and-“Joliece started to ramble and Lynis knew if he did not answer soon, she would start explaining why it was cold.

“Got it mom.” Lynis answered, leaving his mother be in a small corner of the room, brushing her hair.

They were currently staying at Godiva’s refuge for women and although the owner was kind and sweet, she did not like the place. The rooms were small and there was hardly enough space for Joliece and her children. It was obvious that the room was not meant for women with children. Joliece knew that she had to leave the refuge as soon as she could. Hopefully, buy a house somewhere away from the city so she didn’t have to see the stupid akalak men’s faces. Muscular and handsome they were but Joliece refused to be swooned by them. Joliece could feel herself becoming angry just at the thought of them, brushing her hair furiously.

“Mumma, I’m ready.” The sweet and innocent voice of her youngest son made her stop brushing furiously and smiled. Both her sons sat on the bed in heavy cloaks, a scarf and caps.

“Where we goin’?”Lynis asked.

[b]“Well, I was told by Mos’rila, the woman that runs the refuge, that there’s a zoo here and I thought it would be fun to go see it.”
She told them, tucking away in her head what she really wanted to say. The zoo was to help them take their minds off of what happened at the end of fall and beginning of winter.

“Why go to the zoo when the zoo is right here?” Lynis asked sticking his thumb at Nathaniel. As if on cue, Nathaniel stood on the bed and leaped off toward his mother, shouting and screaming. Joliece caught him in time, wrapping one arm around his bottom and using the other to tickle him and make him laugh.

“Let’s go my lovely children. To the zoo!” She carried Nathaniel out the door.

The zoo was not too far from the Godiva refuge, luckily for them. Joliece and her children arrived in less than ten chimes. They walked in and were immediately introduced by the song of birds and the smell of the wild. They walked by a few animals Joliece remembered seeing on the caravan and reminded her children of the experience. Joliece ran through a beautiful garden with her kids and immediately, shrieks of laughter had come out. They were there for no longer than a belle and already, the mother and her children were happy. After running around, Joliece thought she should take her kids to see even more of the animals. She remembered Mos’rila telling her there was a very popular exhibit most people loved to see. Joliece did not remember what the exhibit was called but she did remember the description. Dark, almost cave-like. When she found it, she led her kids into it.

"Mom, what’s in here?” Lynis asked nervously.

“I don’t know… probably bats. Judging by the webs, spiders?” She stopped, looking back at the boy and smiling.“Are you scared, Lynis?”

He didn’t answer her question, instead he walked around his mother and younger brother so he could be the first to enter.“Mom, look!” He called out in a panic. Joliece, who was half scared, carried her youngest child as she hurried in only to see Lynis staring at the glass in amazement.“It’s those symenestras.” He told her and for a moment, Joliece did not believe him.

She looked through the glass herself to see two sorry figures doing absolutely nothing. One a female and the other a male. The male paid them no attention but the female did, moving closer to the glass, giving Joliece a good look at her. The female was pale, paler then Joliece. She was a chalky color with black hair and she did not look so well. Joliece looked into her aura and it was worse. The female’s aura seemed to be screaming out with pain and sadness.“What… what is this? It’s horrible!” The symenestra moved closer to the glass, not looking at Joliece but Nathaniel.

The female symenestra pointed her long finger at him before uttering,“Baby.” She pointed toward something in the shadows of the exhibit and said again,“baby.”

“There’s a baby over there.” Lynis told Joliece, staring hard into the dark space.
