Food Equals Love

7th of Spring, 515 AV

Orin was barely keeping his temper under control. Remi had given her blessing for Orin to start growing a few herbs in pots so The Rearing Stallion would have fresh herbs come winter. This past season, their supplies had run low, and what they’d had at the end had definitely not been worth using. In fact, it may have been downright dangerous. The fresh herbs had dried or rotted and the dried ones had lost their potency. So, when Orin had told Remi he could handle a few of the basic herbs for the kitchen if she gave him the funds it had seemed like a no brainer. And she had signed off on it with touching gratitude. It had made Orin feel

Of course, as always, Orin had failed to take into account Rondo’s reaction. The older chef seemed furious to the point of incoherence. Orin honestly couldn’t figure out why. Something about it being beneath a chef’s dignity to raise herbs and the unsanitary nature of plants and the wasted time spent caring for them. Rondo was sputtering by the end of it and Orin wasn’t far from getting there himself. He had wisely stayed silent through Rondo’s rant, but now Orin felt the need to speak up. ”Look. I’m sorry I know you’re the better cook, but about this you’re just wrong. Remember when you were worried about our guests complaining because we ran out of fresh herbs? Well, I can prevent that, since I can keep these alive through most of winter. I’ll do all the work and I promise it won’t dig into the time I spend cooking! I’ll come in early if I have to.”

Although Orin really didn’t want to come in before he already did, since it would cut in on his precious free time, which was already limited, if it would get Rondo to let him grow herbs, Orin would do it. Rondo just sniffed at him, but apparently satisfied with Orin’s response, left him to it. Orin sighed with relief, but carefully kept it under his breath. He definitely didn’t want to have Rondo hear him. It would set the man off all over again.

Moving to the door, Orin picked up his pots. Orin jiggled them around a bit until he could carry all six at once. Thankfully they were rather small and Orin could basically wrap his arms around them before dumping them all off on a center table. He straightened up. His spine felt pinched from all the lugging around he’d been doing. Orin twisted from side to side until he felt a crack followed by the tension easing out. Feeling much more comfortable Orin began examining the kitchen for likely spots to place his new plants. There were windows aplenty, but Orin would have to find locations that were out of the way of normal activity. But the actual windows, now propped open for Spring had sills that would be perfect for the task.

Orin darted around the kitchen placing his plants with extra care. After all the trouble it had taken him to actually get them here he didn’t want to damage them. He had only gotten basic herbs, parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, dill and basil. He figured that if they were thriving then Remi and Rondo might open up to the idea of having the more expensive plants here as well. And if Orin messed up somehow, these were all hardy specimens and could survive his bungling around. So Orin felt reasonably confident about his decision.

As Orin surveyed his handiwork, something deep within him relaxed. He’d been craving the sight of something, anything growing for a long time now. Unfortunately his room was totally enclosed in the bowels of the fortress and anything he brought there would shrivel up and die. But as someone who had grown up surrounded by woods and fields, the cold, plain, gray, unfeeling stone started to wear on the nerves. So if Orin had a little bastion of spring in the midst of winter he’d go through any amount of hassle to make that happen. Although Orin hadn’t told anyone this, he wasn’t sure how he felt about Syliras anymore. After having an assassin attack him and add that on top of Orin’s pre-existing nagging sense that the walls were closing in on him and the citadel just didn’t have the sense of peace and serenity it used to. Orin toyed with the idea of simply packing up and moving out. Then the thought of his nearly empty purse strings and he groaned. He would have to stay in Syliras until he had enough mizas to handle the expense of traveling. And the gods alone knew how long that would take.

[Rearing Stallion] Plants and Plans (Sylvette)

Sylvette's master had many interests, chief among them was cooking of course, and that was indeed what he spent the most of his time doing, however in the time he spent away from the kitchen her master showed a strong fondness for flora, particularly the plants that could be called herbs, which in the end was an extension of his prior hobby.

Since Sylvette had met Orin he had talked of wanting an herb garden of sorts on account of the fact that the Stallion had nearly run out in the prior season, though Sylvette felt that he would have wanted to grow his own plants even if that hadn't been an issue. Watching her master place the herbs on the window ledge Sylvette watched with mild interest, plants were nice and all but not really the Ideal food i her opinion, meat was all she needed, not that she couldn't eat other things merely that she had't and she was rather fine with not changing the diet that she had maintained for so long. Letting Orin do as was his want Sylvette decided to see what was taking place in the rest of the kitchen, Sylvette had made a bit of a game within the kitchen, The goal, was to not get spotted by Rondo and see how close she could get to him before he shooed her away in some manner that was generally none to polite, thus while Orin was busying himself with hi plants Sylvette had taken to crouching to her belly and sneaking up on the chef busying himself with creating the daily luncheon the Stallion served.

Slowly scooting towards the man Sylvette had learned what angle was best when it came to approaching the man which was just off to the left when approaching from behind, making her way up to him Sylvette slowly placed one paw in front of the other, never stopping her motions but making them all one fluid very slow movement, much like the flow of cold honey, slow but not faltering. Rondo was rather sharp for the cranky person he was and he usually spotted her once she got within a few paces, but today he was so intent on his work that it seemed that Sylette would be able to get close than was the usual, thus as he went on slicing vegetables Sylvette progressively slowed her pace carefully edging toward the man until she got to where with one more step she would be able to touch him, or bite the meat of his ankle if she was so inclined. But just as she was taking the last step a potato came crashing down right past her head, with the realization that he had dropped a potato Rondo turned just in time to see a cat fleeing the scene, "Damned animal" was all he said before retrieving the potato from the floor and continuing his work, no doubt he would tell Orin he ought to get rid of the damnable thing later.

Not quite sure if the potato had been dropped intentionally or not Sylvette had bolted before taking the time to find out. Quicly making her way back to her place by her masters side, though In hind site it was likely that behavior like this drew the ire of rondo towards Orin, which was something Sylvette didn't want to do, in fact it was quite the obvious but it seemed the man would complain just as much over good behavior or bad.

Looking up at her master Sylvette saw that he was still absorbed in his plants or at leas seemed to be and thus taking the chance to show her master that she had an interest in his doings she hopped up onto the window ledge so that she too could observe the plants he was placing upon the ledge.

Giving one of the plants a curios sniff which quicjly over powered her poor nose making her recoil slightly from the plant (the Basil) before looking her master in the eye from her elevated position and giving him a plaintive "meow" showing some disapproval of the plant she had just smelled.

[Rearing Stallion] Plants and Plans (Sylvette and Eluri)

Postby Eluri on March 9th, 2015, 8:48 am

The petite woman was leaving the Welcome Home, that small orphanage that called out to her, when she started to wonder how Orin was faring. He had fished her from the Great Harbour only a few days back and had kept all of his promises, saving her from what could have possibly turned out fatal. He had done much for her in those brief moments of panic and confusion, and now she was determined to do something for him, even if it was only a small visit.

As she made her way to the Rearing Stallion, Eluri reflected on the past few days and her new life in Syliras, the city that she somehow knew but couldn't remember. Her feet knew where to take her, and her body somehow felt...at home in the stone fortress, but she just couldn't make out why. There was a strong sense of deja vu, an undeniable sense of nostalgia, but it was all obsolete without any content, any recalls, that told her that she had been here before. There was only the orphanage, which she remembered was in her memory of standing vigilant in the night, but that did not provide her with enough evidence telling her that she had been here before. She needed to find someone, something, that she recognised or who recognised her. The memories were too hazy and broken to make a proper image. There was no sense of time in any of them, no chronological order and organisation, and that left her to rely only on what she could gather and extract from each and every one of them.

Individually.

But that was something for another time. She had already mused over this before, many times over after that day in the sea, but there had been no positive results. No progressive results that revealed what that foreboding feeling truly was. It was like a skeleton in a dark, locked closet, one she owned yet had no key to. She had spent her nights at the dock, staring up at Leth and wondering what the truth behind her descent back to this world, the truth behind those memories, were. They were just simple musings, ones that she did not expect to have answered, but she found comfort in them.

As she walked past the Maiden District, past her housing area, Eluri's mind wondered back to Orin. He was a nice man, good and honest and, in her mind, much like a child when panicking. He was someone that made you want to protect him, and Eluri was no different. Although she only cared for children and animals, she did also care for that man that didn't at all seem an adult. He was taller than her, by quite a few inches, but he was...soft. Not literally, no, that man was built like an oven, but he had a good heart. He had saved her, and so earned both her loyalty and gratitude, as well as a favour that had yet to be repaid.

Ignoring the citizens and humans waving their wares at her, she continued down the path towards Nettle District, towards the entrance gates she had yet to pass through. It was where the taverns were, where the Rearing Stallion should be, if she could remember correctly.

The next time she met him, she could make out his features much more clearly. Without any of that cold blinding her, or salty water burning her vision and summoning up tears, Eluri was able to ingrain Orin's face into her memories. They were sharp and striking, but that was all she could say. She didn't know what pretty, beautiful or handsome was, merely cute and comfortable. She was never one for fashion, but she did know how to sew. It was a skill that seemed to have carried over with her memories, something that reminded her of motherhood and the orphanage, but that was it. She couldn't say whether or not Orin was attractive, he was young and was easy on the eyes for sure, and, in all honesty, she didn't really believe it all that important. She liked his character, his willingness to help a stranger who was struggling, and that was enough for her. What was romance, anyway?

When she finally escaped the crowded path wedged between the Maiden and Illythian districts, and into the entrance of the fortress city, Eluri snapped back to attention. Syliras was a crowded place in general, bustling with life and whatnot in the early hours of the day, but she didn't stand in one place for long to analyse and watch others do whatever they needed to do. She set off again for the Rearing Tavern in the snap of a wrist, her focus and purpose unwavering in its path.

Down the street she went, the main gates towering over everything in the distance, her feet planting light steps as she progressed. She was almost there, almost at the location where Orin and kitty would most likely be, and she felt the onset of anticipation as she spotted the dangling red and white sign of the tavern.

When she finally reached her destination, the redhead noticed a slight movement from the edge of her vision, where the windows and their sills were. Somebody was shuffling pots of what appeared to be plants around on them and, not wanting to disturb them and remembering her goal once again, she entered the tavern.

She was still wearing borrowed clothes from the tavern, so it wouldn't have been much surprise if she was mistaken for one of the maids. Still, she made her way towards the kitchen.

Popping her head into the bustling room, she called out in an oddly strong, yet polite, voice that did not appear to match her stature. She wasn't sure who was going to hear her, but she wouldn't have cared anyway. If that mean man yelled at her, she'd simply yell back.

"Is there anything I could help with?"

Orin Fenix
Food Equals Love

Orin finally had arranged all the plants to his liking. He had been striving for maximum exposure to sunlight and minimum chance of being in the way. His initial decisions had mostly been sound, but he’d had to shuffle the basil and the rosemary around once he’d found they blocked light from the table where people chopped most of the vegetables. Orin didn’t want to be responsible for someone cutting themselves or even losing a finger. And even though that scenario was a bit extreme Orin wasn’t taking any chances. After all, the person who could cut off their finger was him.

Though Ginger had stalked off somewhere, Orin kept an eye on her out of the corner of his eye. She had taken it in her mind that teasing Rondo, who despised having a
”filthy, flea-ridden, animal” in what he thought of as his kitchen. Orin snickered when Ginger got almost all the way to Rondo’s vulnerable ankles. A runaway potato ruined the plot when it almost hit Ginger on the head. She fled before Rondo could do anything too awful to her, but for once the chef seemed in a cheerful mood and let it go without causing an incident. Or maybe he was as tired of all the cattiness that had sprung up between him, Orin and Remi. When Ginger made her way up to the pot holding the basil plant, Orin reached out to scratch under her chin. ”That’s why we only put a little bit in, and cook it,” Orin chuckled as she sniffed the herb and sneezed, probably overwhelmed by the strong scent. ”Otherwise it’s way too much for anyone to handle.”

Orin shifted his hand to behind Ginger’s ears. He stayed there for a while, content to simply stand there and do nothing for a moment but enjoy the company of his friend. Orin was truly coming to think of Ginger as a friend. She made him feel more confident and adventurous and playful. He didn’t realty know what she was getting out of all this but considering she was still around obviously whatever Orin was doing, it was working. ”Scoot over will ya? I have to test the soil.” Working around her, Orin stuck his fingers in the dirt. It felt dry to him. Picking up one of the numerous water filled buckets Orin stuck his fingers in it and began sprinkling water. The soil absorbed it greedily. Orin flicked two more handfuls of water on it before making his way to the rest of the plants. They all were a bit parched so Orin watered them as best he could.

A voice that sounded vaguely familiar spoke from the entrance to the common room. Turning his head, Orin saw a head of flaming red hair, pale skin and a startling pair of pale blue eyes. Orin was sure he had met or at least seen this woman before but he couldn’t place her. That is, he couldn’t place her until he noticed the clothing was wearing. It looked like one of the maid outfits from the tavern, the spare they kept in case of emergencies. But this woman obviously wasn’t one of the maids. Which could mean only one thing.

”Eluri?” Orin exclaimed, startled. Setting his bucket down he hurried over to her, honestly not sure how he was supposed to react. ”Is that you Eluri? But you look so different, without your hair and your horns and what happened to all of that? Did I miss something or was I hallucinating that night? Ah, it’s wonderful to see you again.” Orin finished chagrined. Whatever had happened to her she might not want to talk about. While her other visage had held an otherworldly beauty, she looked much more approachable now, while still retaining a serene grace. Orin was so flabbergasted that the approaching person behind him didn’t register on his any of his senses until a voice boomed out.
”Well, well, well, what do we have here?”

Listening to Orin talk to her about plants was intriguing as it was sneeze worthy and SSylvette liked listening to her master speak so animatedly about something he liked, Even if it was just the reason you should only use so much basil in a dish. Watching her master as he worked with the plants, checking the soil to see if it needed water, and positioning the plants so that they could get more sunlight, His hands gently handling each individual plant as if each were a precious thing that might break with the slightest breeze.

While he handled the plants the expression he bore on his face was a gentle one, similar to the face one makes when looking at a child, a calm small smile that bellies a carefree feeling rarely attainable in the storms of life. Sylvette liked seeing Orin like this, especially as he had been more aloof than usual and it made her a little happy to see him with such a peaceful expression on his face.

Interrupting Sylvette's observations though was the appearance of a familiar red haired women with pale skin and eyes like the ocean, the Woman Orin had fished from the Ocean not so many nights ago, the woman locked her eyes on Orin upon finding him and she had a look of peculiar determination on her features, and then she blurted out an offer to help. Orin though managed to entirely miss the offer of help seemingly just pleased to see the woman again, throwing a series of questions and statements at her as was his fashion. Though the reunion was cut short rather abruptly by the interjection of the Stallions grumpiest chef Rondo, who was quite territorial of his Kitchen.

[Rearing Stallion] Plants and Plans (Sylvette and Eluri)

Postby Eluri on March 15th, 2015, 11:37 am

Although she didn't pay it and heed, Eluri had attracted quite a bit of attention on her way to the kitchen door. Not only had she gained the attention of the few customers that had already appeared for the day, dining away their hunger and sating their stomachs with the delicious meals made by the chefs, the red head had also garnered the attention of the staff members. Whispers as to who the new maid was passed around in the common room, their analysis spanning from the way she held herself to her sunset hair, and to even her face. To the new ones, she was merely someone below them that they could possibly boss around, give chores to and to garner favours. But to those who had worked in the Rearing since the very beginning...it was a face that sent a prickling sense of apprehension. Like a loved one who had returned from the grave, a survivor of battles and one who defied the Stone Garden, Eluri was hard to place and harder yet to identify.

Seth Aargon was the first one to spot the odd looking maid, whose clothes were a tad bit too tight in some areas and much too long in others. She was a stranger, that much was clear, and he knew better than to let a stranger impersonating as a maid to enter the kitchen; who knew what kinds of mayhem the woman was bound to make. With that thought in his mind, the boy went to fetch his father, after finishing off the order he was taking.

Eluri noticed the gazes and whispers, the boy who dashed to possibly find the Rearing's owner, and the discomfort of the ill-fitting dress, but she didn't care. She was here for Orin, and possibly for kitty who followed the chef virtually everywhere, and that was what she was going to stay for.

When she had peeped into the kitchen, the aroma of heartwarming food wafted over her in a wave of heat, moisture, and noises. There was sizzling, bubbling and burbling, chopping and all manners of sounds that she couldn't place. Even after her mild outburst the music of cooking did not cease. Some of it did falter, but who had time to pay attention to a maid when there was food to be made and dishes to be served? Customers were hungry and it was the chef's duty to provide them with what they had payed for.

Amongst all that commotion, though, was one single sound that Eluri noticed. A thunk of sorts, oddly out of place in a kitchen and completely out of rhythm to the cacophony. She wasn't sure what she was hearing, and if that name that had been called out was her, through all the noise, but she turned towards it. It was like a summons, and she responded.

She wasn't sure what she had been expecting, probably some sort of task that involved shepherding plates and cutlery back to the kitchen, that much the redhead could do, but it definitely was not what had followed.

The ethaefal had been waiting at the entrance to the kitchen for what felt like quite a few moments, not too long but not instantaneous either, when Orin appeared before her. She had seen him before, her eyes having latched onto his familiar form upon entering the kitchen, but the rush of it all, his speedy movements towards her, caught her by surprise. Of course, her face didn't show that, though.

"Is that you Eluri?" It was a silly question, of course it was her, but she didn't think of it as such. She gave him a nod, all proper like, and didn't say or do anything else. She couldn't, anyway, what with all the fussing the muscular man, barely entering adulthood, made over her. But you look so different, without your hair and your horns and what happened to all of that? Did I miss something or was I hallucinating that night? Ah, it’s wonderful to see you again."

She wasn't surprised that he couldn't recognise her, really. She looked completely different during the night, she knew that much too well, but it was now merely a remnant of her time with Leth and Syna. It was what she had left of the time she was free from flesh and bones, but now that she was back...she didn't find it all so bad. She knew what she wanted to do now that she was alive again, and that was to do everything she could not do before. But what didn't she do before? That was an issue she had yet to broach.

When he had finished spilling his torrent of questions, Eluri wasn't quite sure which of his questions to address of answer first. His expression and tone was also rather odd, conflicting with his words even. Why would he sound so distressed if he's glad to see her?
"It is nice to see you as well, Orin," came her reply after much musing, a small smile planted on her lips for his sake, "I do not know the exact details but it seems we are called ethaefals. A knight told me that a few days back after seeing me shift. I cannot explain all of this to you now but, if you wish, we could visit the library together another day?" Her reply was rather vague, even to her, but Eluri wasn't sure what to really say. Does she tell him that they're from the "heavens" and that there are two types of ethaefal? It was too much to say at once, and there were other things to do. Eluri was here to help with the tavern, and she'll take care of that first.

It was quite the perfect timing when she noticed a rather...interesting man walk up behind Orin. He appeared to be the head chef, seeing as to how he was holding himself in a rather authoritative manner and all. She knew a little of him, from what she had been told about the Rearing Stallion's head chef, and was unsure whether to feel intimidated or not. She didn't feel anything towards him, that was for sure.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here?"

"A person willing to help," was Eluri's natural reply. She didn't particularly like his tone, especially his rather condescending repetition of the word well. It was also only natural that she snapped back at him, too, what with her protective instinct for Orin kicking in.

"It is nice to make your acquaintance, Mr Vustakoff, but I do believe that you should be tending to your cooking," came Eluri's snappy reply, her tongue merciless in its polite bluntness, "there were quite a number of customers waiting for their meals outside and I am here to help you serve them."

It was true, what the redhead had said, and Rondo couldn't make much of a scene about what she had pointed out, despite all of his pomp and territorial behaviour in the kitchen. The food needed tending to and the customers needed feeding. It hurt his pride to quite a great degree and it made him quite speechless, but he couldn't argue with her, nor intimidate her. He just wasn't skilled enough in either and she was also quite the persuasive one, using truth and his pride as a chef to her advantage.

"Ah...is that so? Well, those lazy staff of mine were of no use, anyhow, maybe you could be of assistance. Orin, why don't you instruct her on what to do? I have some, urgh, cuisine to attend to."

It was quite pitiful, the way he couldn't argue with her, but she didn't mind not having to argue; Eluri hated arguing. But before she could turn back to her conversation, or whatever their little exchange of words could be labelled as, with Orin, there was a voice she had never heard before call her name. She couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from, whether it was from within the kitchen yet again, or from behind her in the common room.

"Eluri? Eluna Lonel Urisa, is that you?"

It was a simple question, yet it had an impact on her. The familiarity of her name on their tongue...was something she had yet to encounter, and it was very unsettling. Most of all she didn't recognise the voice.

[Rearing Stallion] Plants and Plans (Sylvette and Eluri)

Postby Orin Fenix on March 15th, 2015, 2:29 pm

Image
Orin nearly yelped when Rondo came up behind him. He had been fascinated by Eluri’s mention of Ethaefals. They sounded mysterious and yet, here Eluri was, plain as day and just as ordinary. Orin hadn’t even begun to imagine that his life would be filled with so many strange and interesting and varied individuals, but just this season he’d met a Nuit and an Ethaefal and somehow managed to convince them he was a person who was worth knowing. It was a heady feeling, so Orin not hearing the chef sneak up to him was understandable. He probably hadn’t been stealthy Orin had just been oblivious.

Orin turned so that he could see both Eluri and Rondo at the same time. Of course, Orin was scrambling for some excuse he could give to the irascible man. Eluri, however, shouldered that particular task and she did so with grace and dignity. Orin’s jaw dropped, as she not only came up with a plausible excuse that would get Rondo out of their hair. As he retreated, Orin turn to her and beamed. ”That was incredible, you have got to teach me how you did that! And I’m sorry, Rondo can be a bit difficult, he doesn’t like me very much because when I first got here I made all sorts of mistakes, burning the bread, mixing up ingredients, completely getting the proportions off, but I’m much better now and well, his attitude. You didn’t need to hear any of that though, did you, I’m sorry I have a bit of a tendency to ramble.” Orin tugged Eluri into the kitchen proper, and shut the door to the common room.

He started walking towards his workstation, chattering all the while. ”I’m so glad you visited. And I’ll admit, this is a much more pleasant meeting than our first. Now, I know you said all those things about helping out to Rondo, but, you know you don’t actually have to do that, right? I can sneak you out the back door, which, next time you stop by, you should use. Oh! To answer your earlier question, I would love to visit the library with you. Unfortunately, it’s closed to anyone who’s not a member of the Order.” Orin frowned. He remembered clearly the librarian gently, but firmly, turning him away when Orin had visited. He’d only been trying to see if he could find any cookbooks in the stacks, unlikely as that might be.

Still, if it was information Eluri was after, there was another option. Lowering his voice into a conspiratorial whisper. ”So, the library is out, but there is another place we could look at. It’s got all kinds of strange odds and ends, I’ve heard, although I’ve never been myself. It’s called, The Unbelievable, no, that’s not quite it…ah! The Undeniable Interests.” Orin looked at Eluri, trying to gauge her reaction. Orin had heard about the store when he’d been eavesdropping on the conversation of two patrons as he was retrieving plates. Something Orin had discovered was that no one ever seemed to pay any attention to servants. They were just, part of the background, so as long as Orin did a reasonable looking task, pretend or otherwise, no one would give him a second glance. So, Orin was able to overhear all sorts of weird tidbits and whispered tales of treasures and monsters.

Suddenly, another voice rang out asking after Eluri, this time calling her by three names. ”Eluna Lorel Urisa? But, why didn’t you tell me that was your name. Is Eluri a nickname then? Orin was suddenly bewildered. He found it completely and totally unlikely that Eluri was actually known to anyone at The Rearing Stallion other than him, since she’d appeared out of nowhere just four days ago. Since Orin hadn’t seen her about the tavern since then, he couldn’t imagine she could’ve came here and met someone all without Orin getting the slightest inkling that she had done it. After all, it would only make sense for her to ask after him, and pretty much everyone except Rondo, who clearly hadn’t recognized her, would have passed along a message to Orin. Crossing his arms against his chest, Orin gaze Eluri a puzzled look. ”Just what exactly is going on here with you?! I think a little explanation is in order, don’t you?” Sighing, Orin uncrossed his arms and rubbed his temples, feeling the onset of a headache. ”Look, I’m not confused, I’m just puzzled. Have you been here before or something?”
